My friend had a Flare deck when Ikoria was released. Took me a long time before I realized Valiant Rescuer wasn't carrying the dinosaur on his shoulders. The card wasn't as cool anymore once I figured that out.
Fantastic timing, I’ve been trying to brew a new Hollow One deck for Pioneer since it’s had a resurgence in Modern - but this is even better! Thanks for the FLARE, Jim! 🤩
@@GoldenSkeeter Yeah, it seems like Jim has got too many lands. The turn 1/2 cycling really smoothes out land drops so you can more regularly do the turn 3 hollow one wombo
@@christosx.755 it really was. Best non-core set in years. Personally I’m still curious how they went from Midnight Hunt into Capenna like two sets later. Like dawg HOW do you make Organ Horder/Decay, acknowledge you fucked up then make a 3mana 2/1 flying cantrip two sets later. Like HOW
I haven't seen Nullhide Ferox's animation in so long, I remember when that card was a house. I miss the sweet animations. I know people complain that the animations take away from your clock but not having them takes away from the coolness of playing a video game and what originally got me into Arena. They should still have them and just have a button to turn them off if you don't want them. I miss when every mythic had its own animation
So, this deck isn't strong enough for Historic (especially post MH3) but it does get a *huge* boost from the LotR landcyclers. You just completely eliminate those flood games. If you can figure out how to make it at least kind of viable I'd love to see you try it!
24:20 they can pump the ferox again but that doesn't give it back hexproof. so activate it, see if you can entice them to go again, then flare it and go to 8. Probably still lose the game at that point. I wonder if there was a better spot to flare a ferox earlier in the game.
Not sure if it would play well in Pioneer but I was pretty high on Irencrag Pyromancer in the Standard version of the Cycling deck. Maybe too slow in this environment though.
My nonsense hot opinion is they should patch out all the cards with unique animations cause its so incongruous with game for so long. It's so crazy seeing a bulk mythic get a 1 sec animation and knowing that will NEVER happen again. The best we get now is the occasional "mechanic" animation for keywords or whatever, or I think (since the ikorea triomes had them) they gave the new capenna triomes animations.
The consensus for worst draft format at my LGS is Brothers War. No one really liked it. Ended up being a lot of the Retro Artifacts influencing the best deck. It actually got me my first 3-0 in draft but it just didn't feel skillful. It was "I got Precursor Golem and some ways to tutor/recur it in black". Clay Revanent, Foundry Inspector into Precursor Golem into Moment of Defiance buffing all my Golems and drawing me 4 cards to refill my hand was stupid.
I hate that zenith flare messes up your matchmaking score. Most cards score between 0 and 42. Zenith flare scores at 216 as the single highest card score in the entire game. So no matter how "budget" you make your deck, you'll only face really strong decks.
@jarrettdrileck6918 im pretty sure it's not. Way before this information ended up becoming public, i made a cycling deck running zenith flare too, and i immediately noticed that i VERY consistently got matched up against t1 and other meta decks. To check if that wasn't just coincidence, i checked with my 2nd account that was in bronze, made the same deck. First did 20 matches of Bo3 historic on that account with a squirrel deck (this was way before bloomburrow , around MH2). Only 1 out of these 20 matches was against a t1 deck. I then started queue using the cycling deck containing zenith flare, and immediately got matched against t1 decks. I did a total of 17 matches, from which 6-7 were yawgmoth, 4 izzet wizards and a few (3-4, dont quite remember ) mono green devotion. Only 2 or 3 of my matches were against t2 or lower decks. Sure, it's not the biggest sample size, but even today i clearly notice the difference when queueing with my cycling deck. I absolutely love it, but it's barely playable because it doesn't have the support needed against current meta decks
10:14 one guy in the stream comments said that khans was garbage, like what? khans is one of the GOATs. that's why that bought it back for arena. they wouldn't put all that effort to re release a bad set
I think khans (in terms of draft-gameplay) was stellar FOR ITS TIME. I think it’s easy for a modern mtg drafter to play it in the modern era and entirely miss a lot of what made it great due to not understanding the set’s context (that being what draft sets that came before it tended to look like).
Love the intent of the video. Formats like pioneer are intimidating to commander players because committing to four-ofs when you've never played seems like a major sunk cost if you aren't having fun. This is a great example that you can try it on a budget. And hopefully move away from commander. Lol
Keep the pioneer content coming!

I read this and went "what, isn't it carrying a dinosaur???" And needed to search for the card to see it for myself lol 😂
Agree with Jim 💯 about Ikoria draft. So many viable archetypes.

Jim - love the channel! Please do more budget decks!
"flare" decks were so banger back in the day. So much nostalogia
They were annoying and boring to play against lol wtf
I remember they had like 17-18 lands too
@@GoldenSkeeter Yeah, it seems like Jim has got too many lands. The turn 1/2 cycling really smoothes out land drops so you can more regularly do the turn 3 hollow one wombo
Lightning Rift, Adventureland Tickets, and TMBG all in one video!! Could a LI guy ask for more??
Fun video - keep up the good work!
Noice!
Edit: Ikoria is actually one of my favorite sets, so lovin this deck!
Ugh you monster. I friggin hated the cycling archetype
Ikoria was one of my favorites too. Human tribal, every companion having a meta deck, it was just so fun honestly. Ikoria standard was hella cool

@@virtueofabsolution7641if it was only two sets later it would be too late to make any changes to new capenna.
Omg I just talked to some one about cycling/flair in the eternal formats. This is an interesting take.
I wonder how the deck would look without the gate angle with more cyclers. It just seems like there's enough win cons with the draw
yeah.... I also thought that gate was kinda overkill....
Gate is a good backup plan and doesn't take many slots
also nice if you dig through 45 cards and cant find a flare
This was a sick budget deck!
21:29 you can activate a Nullhide Ferox to make it lose trample after they have used Rhonas once.
Nice one. We need to see more budget stuff
Love the rage quitter at the end lol. Looks pretty fun. Never played pioneer before, might actually give this one a try!
Thanks jim!
Nice TMBG lyric drop
This looks like a fun deck to play
Unlicensed hearse was reprinted in Thunder Junction and is going for 2 bucks, not a very expensive add tbh.
Id like to see more wacky pioneer
Giving my comment support to you Jim!
Oh wow this is the very first 60 card deck I ever built, I loved this deck even though it wasn’t very powerful

Love a good Phoenix player salting 🎉
neat deck!
Around 36:39 it looks like Cassian is waggling his tail
I miss the ikoria cycling decks
Fomo seems good in this deck

Jim put his best "Mr. Bean" face in the thumbnail...
Can you post the original decklist, I'm curious
Pioneer sounds appealing ... Watching cuz you though boo.
