    Joseph is the Betrothed, yes, but S Matthew says his wife 3 times in his Gospel. Even the angel says "your wife" to Joseph.

      Betrothed persons were considered spouses in that culture. In fact,, if you were betrothed and wanted to break the engagement, you had to get a divorce. This is why Joseph was going to "divorce" her quietly. The Jewish wedding had two parts - the Betrothal and the Wedding proper.
