      Jennifer
Lord have mercy , Jennifer. I deal a lot with anxiety. I usually cant even handle standing in the nave at church. And have gone through times of not even leaving my house to take out the trash, because the thought of stepping outside was just tooo much. Just keep trying. Little steps, even if it seems like a pittance effort. Does exercising lessen your anxiety at all?

I love that fr barnabas lives sci fi. I do too. I think there's some pretty good lessons that come out of that genre - with the right perspective and our Jesus spectacles on :)

Father, I am studying Orthodoxy but have not taken the leap. I love the mystical aspect of orthodoxy but am in bothered by their view on salvation. It seems they say we cannot be assured of our salvation. Boy I don’t need that fear in my life. Can you clarify?

I assume you are coming from a Protestant view? The idea of once saved always saved is not biblical as there are many cases of people falling away and so their assurance of salvation was forfeited by their actions. But there is a bit of a paradox here because from God's perspective, he is faithful and will never abandon you (II Timothy 2:11-13) but notice in verse 12 it says "If we endure". In other words, while God is absolutely faithful without failure, we as human beings aren't and so we need to practice righteousness (Acts 10:35-36), bring our bodies into subjection so we aren't disqualified ( 1 Corinthians 9:26-27), bear fruits worthy of repentance (Luke 3:8, Acts 26:20) and fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-24), continue in sound doctrine (1 Timothy 4:16). Romans 2:6-10 teaches that God will render to each person according to their deeds and that we are slaves to the one we obey (Romans 6:16). What Christ did is truly beautiful in that while we were dead in sins, he gave us life and while we were sick, he healed our sickness. We are given the promise of eternal life in Jesus solely based on what he did but that doesn't mean we do nothing after being brought into his kingdom. We are called to work out our salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12) because not all who say to him Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom (Matthew 7:21-26). We must endure, bear fruits of repentance, obey the gospel (Hebrews 5:9), abide in the vine, walk worthy of our calling (Ephesians 4:1) and receive the true bread of the Eucharist which is spiritual medicine that we must have. Yes, Jesus did it all, but that doesn't mean we do nothing. I'm not saying you are saying that, but just driving home the point that faith without works is dead and so we are assured of salvation only if we remain in Him, it's a free choice. I hope this helps and I hope I didn't step on Fr. Barnabas's toes, but if he were to reply, I hope that he would confirm this view or correct anything I wasn't accurate on. Thank you for your time, if I can answer any questions, feel free to ask.

Tyranny of the urgent, letting the urgent things of every day life become more important than the essential things of every day life that we neglect the essential things of the eternal
