It's obvious that the folks that are critical of the fan size and cost have never spent a summer on the US Gulf Coast. I have spent summers in Pascagoula, New Orleans and Houston. There is nothing worse than trying to work in the heat and humidity. Air conditioning is an answer, but the minute you open the big door the cool is gone.
Adam has found a workable answer. It solves a number of problems; comfort, air movement, operating cost, noise control. $7000 is a small cost for making the shop a livable work environment.

I can say from experience, that the Big Ass fans are worth their price. I run a large shop that we used to use over 20 36 inch fans. This is in St Louis. We installed 3 fans, 2-12 foot and 1 -16 foot. Huge difference, summer and winter. They allow for a better workstation less fan “fatigue “ and you can hear everything without a fan blowing in your face all day. All around great experience and the pay for themselves over time, like any quality purchase.

People say that they're overpriced but honestly from an R&D and manufacturing perspective, these are fine. Of course, they have very good margins on these. However, you do get what you pay for. I suspect they're using a high pole count ECDC motor with high quality drive circuitry, and there's a fair amount of heavy-duty electronics that would go into these to give you that high efficiency. Making a rotating assembly completely silent would generally require precision bearings with custom-selected greases to minimize noise and maximize longevity. It's not trivial. The rotor assembly seems to have been balanced to high standards. The overall engineering of these seems excellent. Robust, easy to use. If you can hose these down, then everything has been nicely gasketed and waterproofed.. again - not trivial. I deal with like $20k+ military fans at times and these units seem like the same types of beasts.

Congratulations to you and your wife on the new workshop.
I'm in the process of setting up a good workshop for me and my son. both of us are Diesel mechanics.
Just brought a second lathe and I'm trying to get my son to build a new workshop for him to be able to fit big machinery so he can work in side instead of working outside.
I told him if he builds the shed I will supply the workshop equipment.
wish you all the best in the future.

Try placing the fan near the door with the air blowing in towards the shop. What that does is force clean outside air into the shop while forcing the bad air out it. I used to be a cable splicer for the phone company and those fans you see near the manhole setup force air in to evacuate the bad air and dust in the hole.
