SNS 159 Part 2: Machining a Large Hydraulic Tube Nut

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 21 ส.ค. 2024
  • This week I have a pretty nice machining project to tackle. This is a steel nut that goes onto a telescoping cylinder tube.It screws onto the tube end and hold the seals and bronze packing nut.
I'll use some heavy wall mechanical tubing and machine this in the American Pacemaker lathe.
Turning, facing, boring, and threading. I also have a face groove to cut on one side for an o-ring.
    Enjoy!

Adam, I've watched more than 250 of your videos and every time I am re-impressed and blown away at how awesome these videos are. Its been said before but I could watch you describe how the wall you just painted is drying. You have a gift, not only in your skill as a machinist and all around shop guy, but the way you teach and illustrate what you are doing, well that is just something that is simply amazing. I think of all the different things I like to watch on TH-cam, I have to put your stuff at the very top of the list. And to top it all off, you are a genuine good guy. That is a rare thing these days. Keep up the awesomeness man!

6:22 This is how you can tackle these big complex jobs so well Adam. You just keep a cool head and stay objective. It's easy to start panicking when you have several hours into a huge job on an expensive part and it starts to go south on you.
I try to learn a little each day about patience in difficult situations and you are a great role model for that.

Enjoyed watching the operations on that piece. Many years ago I worked in a sales and services shop that did a lot hydraulic work. Taking those nuts off is a chore. A lot of times no matter how delicate we tried to be the effort of removing them would result in the machining of a new nut. Good machining challenges. Thank you for sharing all these project and spending the time to do all the editing.

My dad introduced me to your channel.. I still wouldn't consider myself a machinist, i could find my way around a machine shop and worked at one for about 6 years. and just watching your videos makes me miss it so bad.. I would love to cut some steel again sometime soon, Love the videos, keep it up buddy. loved watching the video where you talk about your background, i myself got to learn some of the ways of the old timers. and it was some of the best hands on experience anyone could ever get, I also learn on the job, starting out with small little jobs here and there, then moving up to doing my own jobs start to finish. People that don't machine just wont ever get how fulfilling cutting steel can be. Hope to get myself my own lathe for my basement soon to piddle around with to scratch that itch again.

Hi there Adam, compliments of the season. Having been in the heavy engineering industry myself and understanding how important it is to have the proper facility to machine and fabricate, I wish to request that you show more of your workshop building project progress and success. My father and I had also started from small workshop to large and then huge workshops, but unfortunately he passed away and I did not continue with the family business. So that is why I enjoy your videos and hence my request. Keep inspiring others through your dedication. Best regards,

I just watched a few of your videos and man you have it! It looks like you're third generation machinist and working in the shop you were raised in. This, like many of our trades, are becoming a lost art. So many of us that have figured out the systems from those before us and always wanted to do what they did...its hard when someone says "your old man would be proud, you're better than he was!" I always thrive to be half as good as them and look back and think I should have paid more attention. The finished products show that we came from a different day and age...even though we never lived during them times.
The thing my Daddy always said, "If you're gonna do it half ass, don't touch it! Let the one that wants to do it, do it or do it better than them!" and my favorite, "I might not be the best...but I will do until the best gets here!" The one thing it appears you (and I both) have learned from the masters is passion! If you don't have work ethic and passion for what you do, in all you do, you will never succeed. We are completely different trades but I admire what you do. I have done some machine work and loved it. I grew my hair long and got tattoos and thought I was going to be something else...always knowing were I was going to end up, right where I belong, in their shoes and working towards the dreams they had!
The hardest part for me is knowing this is all being fazed out and all the junk is taking over. Trying to have a legacy live on past us and hand down them skills down is harder than all the jobs combined! Its easier for the up and comers to do the bare minimum than to try and figure out how to be the next in line to carry that torch and let the legacy live!
I am happy for your success and the mind you have from the legends before you...THANKS FOR THESE VIDEOS, THEY'RE PROUD OF YOU!

You talking about how hard the original nut was to remove reminded me of some of the actuator repair jobs I used to do. Getting them off was the hardest part and many a Rigid wrench was snapped when a 8 foot cheater bar and 2 blokes were hanging off it. even had to use a forklift tine on the handle once. Some pretty unsafe work practices that I'm glad I don't endorse anymore. Great vid mate, I commend you on your skill and workshop cleanliness.

Nice job Adam, all pretty standard stuff, but just a suggestion, for all the amateurs, rough machine all faces and diameters before starting your finishing cuts, especially on stainless steels to within 1mm ( 0.040") stainless springs like a SOB, and if you finish one side before breaking all the faces and diameters you can be in a world of pain. I feel your pain when it comes to old machines, feel is everything. I can remember far enough back to when we had to grind our own screwcutting tools, that was fun, and dont get me started on multi-start threads, I still have nightmares lol. Yeah, really nice job.Old school.

Great stuff Adam. You're a master at your craft.
I still cannot believe that some people are so petty and immature that they give you a thumbs down.
You and Keith, among others would make great shop teachers.
I enjoy your posts and have been watching now for over a year !!!
    So Happy Anniversary Adam !!!
Take care and keep up the interesting posts !!!

Thanks Steven! The thumbs down is part of the TH-cam experience and one that all creators have to enjoy. LOL

Nice work. There's obviously been some advancements in threading inserts. 30 years ago I'd have chipped the tips had I taken your depths of cut. You don't have to thread in granny gear. You get better finishes and fewer problems if you thread in the "sweet spot" of speed and depth of cut.
Nice safety note on dealing with thrashing ribbon chips. They're like razor wire or jumping cactus. Get too close and they'll snatch the pliers right out of your hand or even pull you into the work zone and slash you to hamburger. Stop the machine THEN deal with the problem.

Yessir Forrest. I have to say those Snap Tap threading inserts I use seem to be bullet proof! I very rarely break the tip off. That was my own personal 1 1/2" Seco bar I'm using but I put in to have work buy a replacement and a 2" bar as well for me. :)
I try to show that when things get hairy, just be calm, stay out of the way, stop the machine first then deal with the chips.

One of the reasons I watch to the end is to see that great photo of you with your Dad and Grandpa. Missed it here.

It's coming back soon Jack, I just have to find it on the old PC. It's buried in a file.

Really well done Adam. Those bigger parts cost a lot more to re do when a mistake is made. You show a good deal of confidence and competence.
