Sounds like the sort of job where you get it back, with the customer saying it's a bit too big, and can you take a bit more off? I hate jobs where it's got to fit something, and they don't provide that for you to check the fit.
Ho have to do what you have to do if it does the job. Wouldn't it be easier if customers brought also those pads that screw on so you can verify measurements and the fit? Anyway it looks nice, better than it came in!
I think the setup was probably the safest possible. The thing looks really scary. The intermittent cut didn't help too much either. It is probably so that the attached stones will wear in and take care of the runout. Seems like You didn't have too much trouble with chatter. Those things tend to ring like a church bell. With the 4-jaw chuck You might have ran into that problem as there was no support for the rim. Glad that it went without any mishaps.
The cleaning costs twice as much as the machining, easy fix. Setting up takes longer with jobs like this. I can appreciate that you don’t want concrete dust all over the lathe, neither would I. Really enjoy this channel, this has to be in the top three engineering/machining shops on TH-cam. So many channels are spoilt by all the crap video intro's, endless repeated commentry etc.

Hey man I totally understand shit needing to be clean. I'm a crane operator and have worked places that want it clean and it so nice to work on them and the guys coming to inspect every year loved our equipment as it wasn't greasy or muddy and took half the time to do a better job then most people would get. Then I've worked places that think cleaning is a waste of money until it needs an 8 hour steam wash before a shop will touch it. I'll always spend any extra time making sure it's clean and well maintained and be proud of what I run.
Normally, if you are retired you don't really have any particular love for Fridays, but Kurtis, Karen and Homie changed all that! Now it's cocktails, snacks and metal shavings on Friday evening!

Some things can't be manufactured, they just come together naturally. Concrete tolerance is measured in inches (US), not mills. Tolerance provided in machining far exceeded what the end user needed for this device. I deal with various tolerances that conflict with building trades in US. The best way to deal with conflicting tolerances is communicating.
@@doughahn1355 CCE is Australian not US so they use Metric not Imperial and that plate is used for concrete pipe where tolerances are much tighter so the gaskets between segments can form a proper seal...

Recently I was talking with a fellow wood turner about my massive 10 inch diameter faceplate. I am totally humbled by the faceplate you used in this video. It's almost like Paul Hogan's movie where a New York kid pulled a knife on him, and he reached behind and pulled out his huge Bowie knife.
I completely understand the frustration with the dirty parts. Having said that, this did come from a concrete company of some kind. Have you ever looked at any concrete companies tools and equipment? It’s usually covered in dry concrete. So to the owners the piece may have been clean!

Like the nastiest piles of food wrappers and paperwork and anything u can imagine STUFFED in that car and it'd be a wiring issue under the dash. We straight up told a lady one time either you clean this out or take it somewhere else. Ive seen pools of dried blood. ALSO IF YOU HAVE A LOADED GUN UNDER YOUR SEAT FUCKING TELL ME! I swear multiple times id go to move seat forward only to grab a loaded pistol. Ppl are idiots

You guys seem to make great content each week no matter how out of whack the work is. You do a very nice job showing the work, the issues and a very efficient way to get around those issues. It's been thirty years since I watched a lathe faceplate turning that slow on the job. It just wouldn't be the same without the safety officer running around!
I work for a major tire manufacturer and the machine shop has a 42” faceplate that is used to bolt up similar looking drums that they machined in this video.
I'll never forget the uncleaned cat food can filling machine which arrived in the shop when I was an apprentice. Worst. Rebuild. Job. Ever. It was like a cat shat in every corner of the shop. Including the yard and driveway. Most of the tradesmen refused to work on it, which left us apprentices to do the strip and rebuild.
Looks like a wheel, walks like a wheel, yeah, lets call it a wheel. Awesome setup. Civil engineer by training and experience and just love the way you apply absolutely practical methodologies to complete every job in the shop. Loved the super slo-mo where you switched to a harder insert cutting at the pre-drilled holes around the circumference of the wheel. Really illustrated the brutal impacts of an intermittent cut. Thanks again for the always great content!

you clearly read all the comments on your TH-cam channel, Idk how long you can keep that up with your current view rate, fun seeing the machining and hard work that goes in to fixing even a single piece of the behemoth machinery that comes in to your shop. I would love to work in a shop like this or out welding on an oil platform, I try to balance money hungry bastard with being a good person, clearly, machining is a good place to do both, as the costs are not cheap, and repairs are defiantly the spot to be when manufacturing is mostly done over seas, or more close to home when lobbing huge pieces of steel around.

@@pgids5886 Years ago, I used a regular sandblaster. Dusty, sweaty work and if there was any grease, the sand just stuck to it. Then I bought a wet blasting nozzle for my pressure washer. Changed everything. Just remember to put on a regular nozzle when you're done and wash everything down. Otherwise there will be grit left on the work that will rust. Once it's washed down, there will be very little rust. Good luck.
In the 70's I worked in a shop where we built and installed tag axles, mostly for farmers. We matched bolt patterns and wheel mounts so it looked like the truck had come with tandem axles from the factory. Think 4 spring, equalized, Neway suspension, but ours predated Neway's. Hardened pins and bushings and everything except the axle stubs and the wheels made in our shop. Ford Motors liked it well enough that we were authorized to perform the conversion on brand new truck. Once in a while, the trucks would come in so dirty that we'd spend half a day cleaning them just to get the measurements we needed. Straight up PITA.
You have a really impressive facility and machining/welding capabilities, especially at such a young age working alone. Love the videos. You always have a fascinating project going on.
We all know you been dying for reason to use that face plate on a video; that thing is amazing. Always enjoy watching you solve your customer's problems.

43 years of repair machining, majority of stuff much much bigger. as in 12-18 ft wheels--drag lines, coal mining stuff. nasty nasty conditions when brought in. customer wants a diamond broach returned to him but only wants to pay the absolute minimum. everything you did here, i have done also. retired and glad to be. enjoyed seeing this. good job, from USA

I'll have to watch the second half tonight, but already this job looks a bit "agricultural" -- comes in dirty, outta shape and angle iron welded to the spokes, almost certainly accompanied with the words " I don't want to spend much on it !" It was like a cat shat in every corner of the shop. Including the yard and driveway. Most of the tradesmen refused to work on it, which left us apprentices to do the strip and rebuild.

Looks like a wheel, walks like a wheel, yeah, lets call it a wheel. Awesome setup. Civil engineer by training and experience and just love the way you apply absolutely practical methodologies to complete every job in the shop. Loved the super slo-mo where you switched to a harder insert cutting at the pre-drilled holes around the circumference of the wheel. Really illustrated the brutal impacts of an intermittent cut.

That makes a lot of sense. Could that warping have been prevented while welding?
@@LesNewell That repair is so ugly! Why not put bracing on the inside? They could tie the braces into the hub and rim....like it should have been done from the factory.

you clearly read all the comments on your TH-cam channel, Idk how long you can keep that up with your current view rate, fun seeing the machining and hard work that goes in to fixing even a single piece of the behemoth machinery that comes in to your shop. I would love to work in a shop like this or out welding on an oil platform, I try to balance money hungry bastard with being a good person, clearly, machining is a good place to do both, as the costs are not cheap, and repairs are defiantly the spot to be when manufacturing is mostly done over seas, or more close to home when lobbing huge pieces of steel around.

@@pgids5886 Years ago, I used a regular sandblaster. Dusty, sweaty work and if there was any grease, the sand just stuck to it. Then I bought a wet blasting nozzle for my pressure washer. Changed everything. Just remember to put on a regular nozzle when you're done and wash everything down. Otherwise there will be grit left on the work that will rust. Once it's washed down, there will be very little rust. Good luck.
In the 70's I worked in a shop where we built and installed tag axles, mostly for farmers. We matched bolt patterns and wheel mounts so it looked like the truck had come with tandem axles from the factory. Think 4 spring, equalized, Neway suspension, but ours predated Neway's. Hardened pins and bushings and everything except the axle stubs and the wheels made in our shop. Ford Motors liked it well enough that we were authorized to perform the conversion on brand new truck. Once in a while, the trucks would come in so dirty that we'd spend half a day cleaning them just to get the measurements we needed. Straight up PITA.
You have a really impressive facility and machining/welding capabilities, especially at such a young age working alone. Love the videos. You always have a fascinating project going on.

43 years of repair machining, majority of stuff much much bigger. as in 12-18 ft wheels--drag lines, coal mining stuff. nasty nasty conditions when brought in. customer wants a diamond broach returned to him but only wants to pay the absolute minimum. everything you did here, i have done also. retired and glad to be. enjoyed seeing this. good job, from USA

It doesn't look like a precision bit of kit with angle iron welded to it. PS nice use of the parting blade.
I love the description of the job. "I don't know what it is, what it's for, or exactly why it needs to be this amount smaller, but I can certainly do that, right after I get this abrasive crap off so it doesn't mess up my lathe and deal with the fact it's shaped like potato crisp"
I'll have to watch the second half tonight, but already this job looks a bit "agricultural" -- comes in dirty, outta shape and angle iron welded to the spokes, almost certainly accompanied with the words " I don't want to spend much on it !"
