  • Urban Cowboy is a 1980 American western romantic drama film about the love-hate relationship between Buford Uling Davis 'Bud' (John Travolta) and Sissy (Debra Winger). The movie captured the late 1970s/early 1980s popularity of Country Music with John Travolta's starring after Grease and Saturday Night Fever.
Mickey Leroy Gilley (born March 9, 1936) is an American country music singer and musician. Although he started out singing straight-up country and western material in the 1970s, he moved towards a more pop-friendly sound in the 1980s, bringing him further success on not just the country charts, but the pop charts as well. Among his biggest hits are "Room Full of Roses," "Don't the Girls All Get Prettier at Closing Time," and the remake of the Soul hit "Stand by Me". He is also the cousin of Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl McVoy, Jim Gilley and Jimmy Swaggart. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, Gilley is a licensed pilot, who holds an instrument rating with commercial pilot privileges for multi-engine airplanes, as well as private pilot privileges for single engine aircraft.
"Stand by Me" is a song originally performed by Ben E. King and written by King, Jerry Leiber, and Mike Stoller, inspired by the spiritual "Lord Stand by Me,"[1] plus two lines rooted in Psalms 46:2--3. There have been over 400 recorded versions of the song.

Amber I'm also black. A black Man..this is my favorite movie of all-time. I just love the characters and the soundtrack. I love Pam in the movie how she handled Bud being honest and up front with her. He didn't make her feel less of a woman. I thought Pam was super beautiful in the film. sissy was attractive also, but Pam just (Flawless). I understand the ups & downs of a relationship..sometimes we don't know what we already have until it's almost too late. Seeing other people in a committed relationship will sometimes draw you closer or draw you apart. Bud in the movie was a stand-up guy he & sissy reconcile in th relationship & Pam was just fine with that. Understanding a person is very important when dealing with someone..take the extra time to get to know your significant other & when they are present in your life at the time. Study him or her. Urban-cowboy is my movie of choice.

I was there! Gilley's Club was my old stomping grounds when I lived in Houston. My friends from work would get me to go to Pasadena every weekend and we'd dance the night away. I was 23, and in great shape, boy I miss those days, lol, but yes, I was there when they filmed this. I dated one of the guys in the movie a few times, he was a great dancer. When the movie came out it was just awesome. One of my faves to this day. Just magical back then. I was so sad to learn Gilley's burnt down years later. By then I had moved out of state and gotten married, but I always look back on my Gilley' days with fond memories. Loved to dance. Loved the great music. Loved listening to Mickey Gilley play and his guest singers. Heard Waylon Jennings and many other greats.. Yes sir, great times...Now I'm 62 and still smile thinking back on those special memories. Well, take care people. I think it's time I watch Urban Cowboy again :-) ..... does a little two step and do si do ;-)

All I know is when I dance in KY, IN, GA-its a weird "2 step." In southern NM, West Texas and OKC its a manly 2 step. Woo hoo the men are hot in those areas!!! Urban Cowboy was the kinda movie which would draw your old memories and aches your heart. Mickey Gilley whom just passed away sometime this year, sang this song with that sadness emotional tone. Great song great singer. As for the characters in this movie, Bud was kinda childish but didn’t hide his likes or hates, Sissy was temperamental and that made guys wanted to luv her more. Last but not least, Pam’s beauty was plainly inarguable, guess very few guys could resist that temptation of getting close to her.

I was a dance instructor. Taught many line dances, East, west coast swing, 2-step, Sweetheart schottische. We used to do a dance called the sway to this song. I'm 77 now and still do some dancing.
