Davine definitely deserved her Oscar and while Cilian is fantastic as Oppenheimer, deep down I wish Paul won his Oscar for this film. Good to see Zuff looking better too ❤️
Bryce with the jokes in this one...first, calling Angus "Mr. Burger" and then at 27:09 saying "we gotta kill him." LOL! I agree with Rob that the film looked and felt authentically set in the 1970s. Paul Giamatti, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, and Dominic Sessa were all fantastic in their roles.
Paul Giamatti is often overlooked as a great actors. His best role is in "Sideways", if you haven't seen that you need to watch it. It was directed by Alexander Payne who also directed this movie. He was also great in "Saving Mr Banks" and the mini series "John Adams"
One of my pet sitting clients was Da’Vine’s drama teacher at Yale and said she’s a very nice person. Gotta watch Sideways and Win Win. Paul Giamatti is amazing in both. Also, if you want to see a great performance by a young actor, check out Ordinary People from 1980.
Rob, Bryce, and Zuff, Gillian Vigman aka as Judy Clotfelter, Angus's mother has a recurring role in "The Sex Lives of College Girls" as Mimi Murray, Mimi, Leighton and Nico's mother. She has also stared in the three The Hangover films as Stephanie Wenneck, Phil's wife.
I love this vibe in movies; like you said, it’s so reminiscent of Dead Poets Society! I’d only seen Paul Giamatti in The Illusionist before but he’s great in this role. And if you guys haven’t seen The Illusionist (Ed Norton’s in it too), it would be super interesting for a movie night 😊
Finally!!! Here’s my Letterboxd review of this one because it’s much easier than thinking of something new to comment lol but it basically explains/describes how I feel about The Holdovers: An instant favorite and classic. Need I say more? Okay, I will… You know a movie is gonna be good when you get that indescribable feeling the very second you lay your eyes on it, and suddenly, it becomes everything to you because somehow, that gut feeling inside of you feels so satisfied and fulfilled with the fact that you were right about it when you’ve watched it, and it turns out to be exactly what you envisioned it to be and even more so, if that’s even possible. This, ladies and gentlemen, is a great film… I was sold from the very first moment, and there’s not a single bad thing that I can say about it. It reinstated the hope within me that I thought was long gone that there still can and will be more quality-based motion pictures in the future like this one. Here’s another review I made when I rewatched the movie a bunch of other times too because I couldn’t get enough: Watching The Holdovers is not enough. I want to live inside this movie!!! Also, I want to gatekeep Dominic Sessa so bad like the urge is so strong and real for that but it seems like I can’t do that simply because he actually is deserving of every bit of success and recognition he’s getting for his debut as Angus Tully. He’s exactly what the industry needs right now and is such a refreshing sight to see! Anyway, I’m so glad that I get to be one of those people to really and truly say that I’ve quite literally been there since legit day 1. He’s gonna go so far in his career. Mark my words. I can feel it in my bones and in my heart. I just get a really good feeling about him. I’m never wrong about these things, so you guys better trust and believe me when I say this… 😭❤️
You guys are srsly THE BEST. I watched this movie for the first time a couple weeks ago. My fave line is the 'penis cancer' comment at the end. Great movie!
i watch a new movie every jan 1st and this was 2024’s, an instant classic. every award the movie and its cast got are so well-deserved and i can’t wait to see dominic sessa in more things
This movie scared me when I saw in theaters because I never expected to see something that happened to me to be on the big screen. I also went to boarding school and stayed behind one February break to go to a college tour and before we could leave on the tour I got injured. The head of a screw slice through my hand as I was running down the hallway in my dorm. I also was waiting in pain for my principal to unlock the car. It was very weird and uncanny, but I love this film.
The mother is in lots of stuff, but maybe you've probably most recently seen her as Leighton's mom in SLOCG! Also, great great movie and great reaction :)
This is going to be be a bit out of place. Have any of you ever heard of the anime series "Prison School"? Seeing as you liked Inbetweeners and Derry Girls, it definitely a series you will enjoy via the comedy.

dominic sessa was robbed of an oscar nomination
So real!
da'vine, dominic and paul are such an amazing trio. their chemistry was out of world during every scene. great performances from all of them ❤
Da'Vine Joy Randolph absolutely killed this film. That Oscar win was beyond deserved.
One of the best ever

This is definitely in the Christmas rotation from this year on
I love the trajectory of Angus and Paul's relationship. From misunderstanding each other to Paul becoming a role-model and a father figure to Angus.

i agree that the holdovers is up there where it comes to Christmas movies
Nominated for 5 Oscars including Best Picture but won for Best Supporting Actress for Da'Vine Joy Randolph.
Its funny, the SLOCG reaction also came out today and the actor for Eli is also in this. He plays Jason. Thought that was a funny coincidence
This is what one of my favourite 2023 movies Dominic Sessa did an incredible debut
