I read that the filmmakers did countless auditions for the Angus Tully character but couldn't find the right fit for the role so they went to the schools where they were going shoot the film, and auditioned kids from the drama departments. That's where they found Dominic Sessa. The guy was literally hired straight out of drama class.

There’s a really great story about how Dominic Sessa was cast. I believe they were scouting/auditioning kids for the role and hadn’t found anyone yet. So they contacted the school where they were filming at, asked their theater department if they had anyone who would like to audition.. and that’s how we got Dominic Sessa! His first role, and he was incredible. That core 3 ensemble is so incredibly strong.

The town location shots were in Shelburne Falls, MA near where I grew up. Although I grew up in the 90s-00s, a lot of Western Mass was (and is) still aesthetically in the 70s/80s, so Christmastime in my memories looks a lot like how it's portrayed in this film. Something really special was captured in this film, but I feel a deeper connection because it feels so cozy and familiar. This is 100% going to be a must-watch Christmas movie for me and my family every year now. I watched it with my parents on Christmas this year and my dad had a great time pausing the TV to scrutinize the shots and point out where things were (he also clocked the modern cars lol) - and spent the entire end credits trying to figure out if the turn Paul takes at the end would be the right direction toward Boston or not on that road.

I was absolutely shocked to find out this was Dominic Sessa's first movie role. I thought all three of the main characters were fantastic and he fit right in with Paul Giamatti and Da'Vine Joy Randolph. Both of them were Oscar nominated (with Da'Vine winning) and I really feel like he could have been too. The Oscars can be a bit snobby and political... they probably didn't want to nominate a newcomer in his first role. I personally feel a great performance is a great performance and your experience - or lack thereof - shouldn't matter. Either way, he's got a bright future that kid.
