Nothing will ever top the 1986 Masters when the Golden Bear made that back nine charge to become the oldest at 46, I was there with my father who grew up in Martinez, GA.
I was extremely lucky to have seen Nicklaus become the oldest man to win a Masters Tournament at 46, my grandmother lived one and half miles from Augusta National. I was rooting for Hale to win his third, these are the golfers I grew up watching as a kid, some of the best ever. It would've been nice if Watson could've finished the 2009 British Open to become the oldest there, but still a great feat at his age to be a runner up.
Fantastic ans breathtaking golf story. Irwin is one if my beloved golf masters... And my first golf teacher too, with an excellent Book of his, in a french translation : "Le golf - trouvez votre style"
Hale Irwin had that look of confidence, calm, and one shot at a time. And he kept that for decades to come afterwards, with all-time victories on the Champions Tour! I think he is one of the most underrated players ever.
Fascinating to hear them talk about Mike Donald as a bachelor. As if that was some sort of scarlet letter. It seems like it must have been a much bigger deal back then. They mentioned it multiple times.
@@dttruman I'm not really convinced it was a deliberate game plan. He'd been struggling with his driver, so he had to resort to his 1 iron. Same thing as with Tiger at the '06 British Open - he tried his driver once (16th on Thursday), duck-hooked it fifty yards left, and didn't use it again all week. In both cases, it got presented as a great 'game plan'. I'm not so sure that was really the case.
@@andrewrobinson8305 Both are or were cool and calculating, and any multiple major winner will tell you the exact same thing. You have to have some kind of game plan and if some part of your game deviates from that, then you go with your strengths. Faldo strength up to that point was his excellent iron play. Tiger probably calculated that it's better to eliminate the bunkers at all cost even if he did lose 50-70 yards off the tee, but like Faldo he was an excellent iron player at the time.
Great tournament. Mike Donald was tough as nails that week...clutch over and over again, one bogey all day Sunday and that was by millimeters on 16, he hit a great putt.
Classy comment by Hale at the end, and what a great competitor he is. I believe Hale was destined to win this considering that monster putt on the 18th hole on Sunday.
They talk about how he has kept himself in good shape and I am wonder how he did it. Did he have what these players have today, a nutritionist and and a trainer (workout regime) or did he do it on his own like most vets did back then?
Bogey at 18th Hole - hook drive cost him so badly. The pressure of playing great shots time after time and not holing putts late on like on par 3 . Great tee shot and putt but no reward. Sad to see Donald’s mum not getting the celebration with her son 🙁 great drama though .
Yeah, even Hale said he was kind of rooting for him too. Hale said he played so well that he deserved it. He still continued to play good golf the rest of the season. Hale was just on fire when he had to be. Hale also said and this may sound a little conceited, but he made a comment that if he could have putt semi decent, he would have walked away with the U.S. Open
Great stuff! You have Hale's, Jack's and Dave Marr's commentary. And Jack always seems to insert wonderful questions and answers. He asks Hale about keeping momentum even as Norman falters, and he talks of the reality on pro bunker play. Plus all the golf history that was given here! Seems like major networks show little interest in that now.
It's one of the things he is famous for and that is his strong long iron play where he hit some of his most memorable shot. He even did a segment on long iron play, but it's in Japanese. I don't know where to find the English version th-cam.com/video/x3-3cjsSLwU/w-d-xo.html
Thanks USGA! This is great. So much better than the highlight package uploads. Fans need to feel some of the natural tension build up, and the network coverage delivers that.
Medinah 3 hit that perfect "sweet spot" after hiring Roger Packard (RIP 2017) fix the odd, archaic holes. Then ruined course beginning in 1998 enlarging the greens for PGA. Rees Jones leveled the course making it "symmetrical" flat, birdie fest with a pointless extra 400 yards. US Open took it off rotation. 25 under boring BMW in 2019, great job Rees.
Another fantastic upload from the USGA, absolutely brilliant.

Didn't realize how close Faldo came to tying Irwin. Nice upload!
Great reporting and commentary from Jerry Pate!
- ... great golf history ...much appreciated.

Great finish!
As a kid, I was cheering for Faldo and couldn’t believe his birdie putt at 18 lipped out.
He had a unique game plan, he was teeing off most of the time with an iron and using long irons for approach shots.

Donald really deserved to win. He didn’t lose it, Irwin was just so tenacious and never gave up.

Just realized how good Nick Faldo was a few months ago thank you

Must add; I can feel the emotions of Donald in closing interview, and even Irwin says he almost wishes Donald had won.
The Chicago Cubs made a mistake of not hiring play-by-play Roger Twibell.
Hale Irwin's second shot on 16 in the playoff saved his life....and won the tournament.

Every time I think of Irwin I think of Dr. Gil Morgan.. I always liked Morgan!!
We were rooting for B. Ray
Can't believe I used to think golf was boring.
Incredible mentally strong is Hale
If Nick had holed that put on 18 and made the play off who know what might have happened but Hale's victory was well deserved

You know you're old when you think the screen graphics look good. And you're really old if you think Irwin is a sharp dresser.
In fairness the red pants aren't too far off something ricky fowler would wear
The good old days of horrible greens and no scrot bailout golf that Tiger came along and destroyed
Was sitting on 18 when he made the putt
where's the 1990 U.S open film
Perhaps Walter Hagen
Too bad Mike didn't win.
I remember back then watching these guys hitting 6 irons 180 yards and thinking they were beasts. Now half the guys are pulling 9 irons.
The lofts have changed a 6 iron then is the same loft as a 7 iron now, plus the modern ball now goes further
I’m NOT A GOLFER SO WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? 6 Iron, 9 Irons?
