I was watching a modern golf video earlier and I was going to comment something like, I miss the 80’s and 90’s when golf was a peaceful experience to watch when we didn’t have drunk idiots shouting that when a guy hits driver on a 500 yard par 5. So annoying! How can those kind of guys think anyone enjoys them doing that?
Like sand in an hourglass, one measly grain at a time. So subtle, we barely notice. Forget to attend to it. Until one day you realize that it's been bleeding away all the while.
I always promised myself that after my made putt that broke 100 for the first time I would raise my arms like Faldo did at 3:23:42.. This spring I finally did it...I looked a bit foolish - it was a tap in - but I still enjoyed it.
I know the feeling ,I was even more elated whenever I first broke 80 ,I shot a 4 over 75 ,I made 12 one putts that day.The next day I shot a 91 ,ugh ,I love this game.
What's interesting is that right once the commentators saw the ball settle, they said it wasn't a gimmie. 2 or 3 footers with wicked break can be missed.

two solid long irons in the playoff from Faldo - first a 4 iron off a downhill lie, next a 3 iron off a downhill lie. nothing to worry about, just it being nearly dark, plus cold/rainy, with wet footing, a little fog, slippery grips, 1989 technology, a massive bunker at 10, and a water hazard at 11, plus gonad shrinking PRESSURE and a questionable sweater...... wow, if anyone wants to disparage the greatness of Faldo, just watch this replay!

Lyle, Faldo, Woosnam - no better time to watch golf as a young teenager. We had just 3 channels on t.v back then , sport was a treat and this was the biggest treat of the year bar none. Staying up late and watching drama unfold on the most beautiful and pristine golf course in the world, happy times.
Best thing was playing until dark then catching at least the last 9 holes, usually 18 easily at the Masters. My first was 92 and Freddie was the man...and still is.

Are you kidding me? Golf is the greatest game! It teaches you everything about life, pleasure, exhilaration, frustration, honesty, self respect. That incredible feeling of a sweet strike of the ball with any wood or iron, is something you will remember throughout the round, even if you’ve had many poor shots!
27:44 I'm glad Hoch missed this 10 footer because after he picked up the ball he placed it at least 2 inches closer to the hole. Study the footage and just look where the ball is in relation to his right foot.
If you look when Hoch is walking around his put when he grabbed the flag and dropped it on the green, his caddy had placed his ball behind the marker by a few inches, that's why Ben didn't say anything, he was standing right there and I don't think Hoch is that smart to get away with cheating, not like Reed

Unbelievable final round action! Faldo awesome, but obviously Hoch blew a great chance. I would have loved to see the Shark in the playoff. I think he should have taken Driver on 18. Best play of the day for me was Crenshaw's wood onto the green and holing a 30 footer to birdie 17.
Great videos and even better as the BBC have now stopped showing it, and they wonder why golf is dying in the UK. It's the masters and open that inspires future golfers, and sadly less than a million will be watching the masters come April
Nick Deakin totally agree. Golf on the BBC was the pinnacle. Masters, Open, Volvo master, world match play and the Dunhill cup all on terrestrial tv. The R&A and Sky have killed the game as I knew it growing up!
I so miss Peter alliss and just this era of golf I know tiger fanatics feel we should only love him but this era was special and the whole commentary etc I don't have that feeling for it anymore. I watch it of course but it's not the same
This brings back fantastic memories...i was 10yrs old had not long been playing golf and used to sit up late with my dad watching the masters dreaming of one day playing this beautiful course....watching my heroes play this wonderfull game!! I wish I could go back to that time just once more I miss it so much!!
Faldo's 3-iron on No. 11 in the play-off was a thing of beauty and Ken Venturi's commentary was the perfect match for it. One of the shots I'll always remember having watched the Masters on TV since the early 70s.
@@Edgar_Randolph How right you are. And I remember him in the final round the following year nailing a 1-iron on the 15th that finished up just off the back, from where he made a birdie. No margin for error. Compare that with today where no one even knows what a 1-iron is, much less uses one off the fairway, and guys are hitting 8-irons to the 15th. Different times.
Hoch the choke, still remember watching this on my little portable telly till the early hrs in the UK, at the time it was great that faldo won, but looking back now, I wish Norman had won, all the chances he had in major's is now forgotten by most, but he was at the time the best player out there for me, and a great guy, he deserved a green jacket to cement the legend

If your skulling, shanking, and slicing, there life expectancy is quite short . The better you hit them, the longer they last..square contact, and compression really show you how superior they were, in the short run, durability wise.
seve is an amazing cry baby and a complete and utter diva here. after the shot is struck and there is some noise it's blame the crowd. give me a break. the dudes all over the course like it's easter.
For the third time in four years, Greg Norman had a chance to win or tie on 18, but nerves undoubtedly interfered b/c the guy who made the a steely-eyed charge from 13-17 suddenly disappeared.. He was overly cautious on the drive and left himself a long, difficult approach in the rain over a greenside bunker.
I really think Norman had some kind of mental major block. He just had too much talent to throw things away time and time again. He needed a sports shrink
Ken Green interference in Seves ruling has to be one of the most appalling pieces of sportsmanship I've ever seen. As ever Bonallack came up with the wrong ruling ignoring the obvious crowd damage rule.

Are ya kiddin? Hey...Faldo played well....but come on. He had two of the most profoundly lucky events take place to win two of his wins. Hoch misses an 18” putt? Norman shoots +6 in the final round. Norman could’ve shot just even par and won. Hardly makes Faldo a ‘beast’. There’s difference between playing amazing like Woods in 1997...than having your opponent dump it so profoundly. Danny Willet didn’t win..Spieth lost. Same goes for two of Faldo’s wins. Take away the amazingly unusual events and Faldo is minus two Masters.

Norman had all the talent to win a dozen majors, but lacked the mental focus, still , he did have a great career. One of my favorite golfers of all time.
BS! Sorry but it wasn't a mental issue with him, it was just bad luck; Bob tway holing a bunker shot; Larry mize pitching in; Mark calcavechia pitching in and some; nicklaus coming out of nowhere etc... that's 4 off the top of my head, he got very unlucky on many occasions.

Been rewatching old Masters…well my own first memories of golf is Woosnam in 1990 holing that putt at 18. But I have to say Norman is up there in nearly everyone from mid 80’s to mid 90’s. How on earth did he not win a Masters. An old wise dedicated golfer once told me Norman sold his soul for money and that was in the early 90’s. 👀😅⛳️🏆🖤

You should try the Mackenzie designed Pitreavie GC if you are ever in Fife. Designed ten years before Augusta in 1922, some holes are eerily similar, 12 and 13 in particular.
I know that putt had to haunt him for years. Would have been life changing if he hit that low and it drops. 2 footer for The Masters....Man I feel bad for him.
Remember this Masters more than any I have seen since 1988 bar Sergio in 2017. I have seen most of them. Nick Faldos rhythm in his swing is second to none, could watch it forever. No hurry, no pulling, just the whole body working as one. Thnks a lot for uploading this! I have this in some of my old VHS-cassettes.
The amazing thing about Hoch's missed 2 footer is he seems to have lined up to the left edge and then hit it straight. He didn't pull it, he just gave away the hole.

Really it was an inside left putt but he hit it left edge and tried to dye it in. To be fair, a left to right slider is the toughest short putt to have, especially to win. In the moments before Doug Sanders missed an almost identical putt to beat Jack Nicklaus at St Andrews, Henry Longhurst noted that this was the toughest putt Sanders could face, “a downhill putt with a left-hand borrow”.
I always think about Hoch’s 2-footer when I’m nervous over a meaningless putt with my buddies. Imagine that pressure! If that putt drops, Hoch and his sweet swing are immortal. Now, I only see his name in the comments of this video upload.
A pathetic stroke under pressure that he quit on. One of the worst putting strokes you will ever see on a clutch putt. Quit on it and deserved the outcome
Seeing Ken Green with the green glove and shoes brings back memories. He played his best golf for a couple years in the late 80’s. Poor guy was in a terrible car accident a few years ago in which his wife was killed and he was pretty severely injured.
The commentators were so biased towards Greg Norman! Nick Faldo makes an absolute bomb on 17 to take the lead. And they barely had any reaction?!🤷♂️🤦♂️ What a putting exhibition by Sir Nick Faldo. Nerves of steel! Total choke by Scott Hoch! Great performance by the Shark as well. Just seemed snake bitten when it came to winning a green jacket. Such a unique Masters tournament. With the relatively high scoring, and rain. Love watching the classic tournaments back!
Scott Hoch took way too long to putt out on the 18th. And he did it again on the first playoff hole (10th hole). It’s like he was too afraid to win, he blew it big time. It’s no wonder they said that Hoch rhymes with choke! Greg Norman’s caddie here is the New Zealander Steve Williams who would experience disappointment and AGAIN the very next year when caddying for Ray Floyd, by losing to back to back Masters winner Nick Faldo. Little did Steve know that he would become the most successful caddie of all time winning 14 Major Championships (13 with Tiger and 1 with Adam Scott).
1986, 1987, 1996 are of course all ones that Greg Norman either let slip away or were taken away from him. This one to me, though, is the one underrated one that got away honestly. Teeing off 18 with a 1-iron leads to a bogey that keeps him 1 shot out of the playoff with Faldo and Hoch. Considering that they both make bogey on 10 (the 1st playoff hole), Norman has to rue that decision just as much as Larry Mize's chip shot and that Sunday collapse in 1996.

It was a long list of near misses for Norman. He won 88 professional tournaments but I'd guess other than his two British opens he would have probably been happy to exchange the other 86 for one green jacket.
I was fortunate enough to play 18 holes with Mike “Radar” Reid a year or so after this Masters in a BSA fund raising tournament in Sun Valley, thanks to my father. What an experience! He was and remains one of the nicest, humble most gracious people I have ever had the opportunity to spend time with. His nickname “Radar” was every bit of how controlled his game was. I wish he could’ve won this one or The PGA Championship which just slipped from his grasp. While playing with mr. Reid, I asked him if he could pick who he was paired with in tournament play, who would it be. Without hesitation he responded, “Tom Watson, he has the greatest temperament of anyone on tour, never says a negative word, he makes you play better just playing with him and I’ve tried to follow his example of mental control while playing golf.” Radar did manage to pull off a couple Senior Majors :)
Crenshaw's putt on the 17th was amazing - it seemed clear it was going to miss right then it broke back to the left, rather like Nicklaus's shorter 1986 putt did. Then Crenshaw hit a horrible putt on the 18th, as far off line as Tom Watson's in the 2009 Open. That's golf.
A little chatter during the break on the first playoff hole. You can hear Nantz talking and saying yes sir to someone, most likely the producer Frank Chirkinian who was the boss of the CBS operation at Augusta for years.

Faldo shot 65 on a challenging day that made everybody suffer. Hoch might have given him a present on the first playoff hole, but Faldo's victory was well earned.
I've often wondered if Hoch and Faldo would've been able to play the 12th in the playoff if they had still been tied, or if they would've had to come back the next morning to decide a winner. Even though 12 is a Par 3, with how dark it was at that point, I'm not sure if they would've been willing to try it. In all likelihood, Faldo's putt on 11 saved them from having to come back on Monday to finish the playoff.
So enjoyed watching this, how did seve not win this?? How did Norman not win ? Faldo was way off lead, such drama right to the end, hoch missing that putt but to fair it was above the hole and it was dark (hehe) is it me or they did take their time in those days... Esp seve .. One of the best things about watching these or when I record a golf tournaments is I skip through the annoying segments CBS, NBC, or TGC put in about side stores. Or I skip the even more annoying commercials! I counted the other day TGC showed three shots and then commercials, this pattern continued until I stopped watching a half hour later. I looked up the winner after it was over. I want to see golf not listen to announcers tell stories ( unless it's Feherty) or advertiser tell we need something when we don't!!!....There, I feel better!
The fact that Greg Norman never won a Masters is remarkable. Such a huge talent who was weak between the ears. His collapse against Faldo in '96 is one of the biggest chokes in all of sports...ever.
You want to know the class of Nick Faldo...he didn't want Scott Hoch to miss the return on 10. He thought well if I'm going to win this tournament, I don't want it to be with a bogey. Then he showed complete class on 11 with that 3 iron second shot which looked perfect all the way. I remember this shot 31 years later.
A fantastic watch, obviously knew the result but watching it unfold in real time is a real experience, in the absence of live sport (thanks coronavirus) this is great. Thank you.

Faldo won 2 out of his 3 Master's titles by shooting the lowest score of the final day - that takes some guts as well as skill
Faldo had less top tens in The Masters than any other major, he had only 3 top tens, so he won every time he was in the top ten.

1 iron certainly wasn't the right play, a wood would have given him a perfect 5 iron

For the third time in four years, Greg Norman had a chance to win or tie on 18, but nerves undoubtedly interfered b/c the guy who made the a steely-eyed charge from 13-17 suddenly disappeared.. He was overly cautious on the drive and left himself a long, difficult approach in the rain over a greenside bunker.
I really think Norman had some kind of mental major block. He just had too much talent to throw things away time and time again. He needed a sports shrink

Norman could’ve shot just even par and won. Hardly makes Faldo a ‘beast’. There’s difference between playing amazing like Woods in 1997...than having your opponent dump it so profoundly. Danny Willet didn’t win..Spieth lost. Same goes for two of Faldo’s wins. Take away the amazingly unusual events and Faldo is minus two Masters.

Been rewatching old Masters…well my own first memories of golf is Woosnam in 1990 holing that putt at 18. But I have to say Norman is up there in nearly everyone from mid 80’s to mid 90’s. How on earth did he not win a Masters. An old wise dedicated golfer once told me Norman sold his soul for money and that was in the early 90’s. 👀😅⛳️🏆🖤

Remember this Masters more than any I have seen since 1988 bar Sergio in 2017. I have seen most of them. Nick Faldos rhythm in his swing is second to none, could watch it forever. No hurry, no pulling, just the whole body working as one.

The amazing thing about Hoch's missed 2 footer is he seems to have lined up to the left edge and then hit it straight. He didn't pull it, he just gave away the hole.
It looked like he was trying to miss it. You can see before the putt that his angle was off.
@@scooteragnew9248he also putted with a very open stance, so the combination of him aiming at the left edge and his unorthodox stance make it look like he’s aiming miles left.
Really it was an inside left putt but he hit it left edge and tried to dye it in. To be fair, a left to right slider is the toughest short putt to have, especially to win.
In the moments before Doug Sanders missed an almost identical putt to beat Jack Nicklaus at St Andrews, Henry Longhurst noted that this was the toughest putt Sanders could face, “a downhill putt with a left-hand borrow”.
I always think about Hoch’s 2-footer when I’m nervous over a meaningless putt with my buddies. Imagine that pressure! If that putt drops, Hoch and his sweet swing are immortal. Now, I only see his name in the comments of this video upload.

Seeing Ken Green with the green glove and shoes brings back memories. He played his best golf for a couple years in the late 80’s. Poor guy was in a terrible car accident a few years ago in which his wife was killed and he was pretty severely injured.
The commentators were so biased towards Greg Norman! Nick Faldo makes an absolute bomb on 17 to take the lead. And they barely had any reaction?!🤷♂️🤦♂️ What a putting exhibition by Sir Nick Faldo. Nerves of steel! Total choke by Scott Hoch! Great performance by the Shark as well. Just seemed snake bitten when it came to winning a green jacket. Such a unique Masters tournament. With the relatively high scoring, and rain. Love watching the classic tournaments back!

Scott Hoch took way too long to putt out on the 18th. And he did it again on the first playoff hole (10th hole). It’s like he was too afraid to win, he blew it big time. It’s no wonder they said that Hoch rhymes with choke!
Greg Norman’s caddie here is the New Zealander Steve Williams who would experience disappointment and AGAIN the very next year when caddying for Ray Floyd, by losing to back to back Masters winner Nick Faldo.
Little did Steve know that he would become the most successful caddie of all time winning 14 Major Championships (13 with Tiger and 1 with Adam Scott).

1986, 1987, 1996 are of course all ones that Greg Norman either let slip away or were taken away from him. This one to me, though, is the one underrated one that got away honestly. Teeing off 18 with a 1-iron leads to a bogey that keeps him 1 shot out of the playoff with Faldo and Hoch. Considering that they both make bogey on 10 (the 1st playoff hole), Norman has to rue that decision just as much as Larry Mize's chip shot and that Sunday collapse in 1996.
He did the same thing in 86. He choked--a lot. I honestly think he had some kind of mental block

It was a long list of near misses for Norman. He won 88 professional tournaments but I'd guess other than his two British opens he would have probably been happy to exchange the other 86 for one green jacket.
On the 10 th that was a joke seve had to wait so long to get a ruling , cant the officials use a powercart , why walk 100 miles?
Officials were ready to call play for the day had Faldo not sunk that long putt - the darkness is not obvious on the tv screen.

I was fortunate enough to play 18 holes with Mike “Radar” Reid a year or so after this Masters in a BSA fund raising tournament in Sun Valley, thanks to my father. What an experience! He was and remains one of the nicest, humble most gracious people I have ever had the opportunity to spend time with. His nickname “Radar” was every bit of how controlled his game was. I wish he could’ve won this one or The PGA Championship which just slipped from his grasp. While playing with mr. Reid, I asked him if he could pick who he was paired with in tournament play, who would it be. Without hesitation he responded, “Tom Watson, he has the greatest temperament of anyone on tour, never says a negative word, he makes you play better just playing with him and I’ve tried to follow his example of mental control while playing golf.”
Radar did manage to pull off a couple Senior Majors :)
Scott lined the ball up to the left edge and tried to give it a two-inch tap; he tapped it three inches.
Crenshaw's putt on the 17th was amazing - it seemed clear it was going to miss right then it broke back to the left, rather like Nicklaus's shorter 1986 putt did.
Then Crenshaw hit a horrible putt on the 18th, as far off line as Tom Watson's in the 2009 Open.

Faldo shot 65 on a challenging day that made everybody suffer. Hoch might have given him a present on the first playoff hole, but Faldo's victory was well earned.
In the end, it's the lowest score that wins, and it doesn't matter how you got there.

I've often wondered if Hoch and Faldo would've been able to play the 12th in the playoff if they had still been tied, or if they would've had to come back the next morning to decide a winner. Even though 12 is a Par 3, with how dark it was at that point, I'm not sure if they would've been willing to try it. In all likelihood, Faldo's putt on 11 saved them from having to come back on Monday to finish the playoff.
Currently on 13, where Reid has a 15fter or so to move to -7. How in the F does Faldo win this? Lol

One of the best things about watching these or when I record a golf tournaments is I skip through the annoying segments CBS, NBC, or TGC put in about side stores. Or I skip the even more annoying commercials! I counted the other day TGC showed three shots and then commercials, this pattern continued until I stopped watching a half hour later. I looked up the winner after it was over. I want to see golf not listen to announcers tell stories ( unless it's Feherty) or advertiser tell we need something when we don't!!!....There, I feel better!

The fact that Greg Norman never won a Masters is remarkable. Such a huge talent who was weak between the ears. His collapse against Faldo in '96 is one of the biggest chokes in all of sports...ever.

You want to know the class of Nick Faldo...he didn't want Scott Hoch to miss the return on 10. He thought well if I'm going to win this tournament, I don't want it to be with a bogey. Then he showed complete class on 11 with that 3 iron second shot which looked perfect all the way. I remember this shot 31 years later.
I think there's no way he wanted Scott to hole that putt!! The look on faldos face was relief that he had another chance and he took it
