We/the British public took on a new level of appreciation for Duval after this - the speech was one of the best ever, esp the scottish open comment - gone was the sullen American in shades pumping his chest in the ryder cup - he became one of us.
It is so true what he says, Golf IS just a game , work is just work and life is just life , it means everything and nothing at the same time .. better enjoy it - It wont last forever ...
I interpret "Golf is just a game" as a motto for losers. It's a game, but much more than a game for some. As is any sport, it's a vehicle for achieving excellence through all the challenges presented in any worthwhile endeavor in life.
The fact that they're talking about the Rydercup teams, which of course got moved back to 2002 due to 9/11, would seem to indicate these highlight films are put together in under two months. That's quite impressive actually.
Duval was a very very good player for a good while. Winning any major is a very good achievement. Any keyboard warriors on here are very welcome to tell me how many majors they've won in golf!
@@dlamiss And if I remember correctly, he was the first to knock Tiger Woods off of number 1, and I think Duval was number 1 in the world for maybe 6 months. I can't remember how long it was
What happened to Duval is what I tell other parents to guard against. Burnout. David was born the son of a PGA tour pro and was golf, golf, golf his whole life. He realized there were other things besides playing 36 holes a day and practicing 4 hours. He became an avid snowboarder and skier. He will tell you in a second he doesn't miss golf. Its like the Russian figure skater after the Olympics who said her plans were to never put on another pair of skates and to never see an ice rink again. I think burnout contributed somewhat to Tiger and his downfall. There came a day when it wasn't laser focus on golf and other things intervened. The issue with Tiger is what Nicklaus dealt with in that he doesn't know what else to do. Sir Nick went into broadcasting, same with Bobby Clampett. The Shark designed courses and apparel.
Its a shame. He went from #1 golfer in the world to someone that would have had to go back to the web.com tour if it weren't for his exemptions he received. Came back from an injury attempted to adjust his swing didnt make cuts and shot in the 80s and lost all of his confidence. Goes to show just how much confidence matters and how easy it is to lose it.
@@betterthanmost9549 David wasn't #1 in the world at any point in 2001. He was #1 in 1999 from March 28th to July 3rd then August 7th to 14th. After that Tiger was #1 from August 15th 1999 to September 4th 2004.

It was a bad golf era in terms of style. Nike was trying to purchase the golf world. Golf fashion was in transition. The clubs were in the metal driver infancy. Easy to remember tiger domination, hard to remember what a great player duval was.
Golf After 50 The caddie cocked up, it is his job to make sure the golfer has all his needs in the bag. Tees, balls, spare gloves, water, blah blah blah and clubs. The player might have wanted a different wedge or a longer iron for a certain round because of the conditions. They would discuss that when practicing just before they go out to play. What about when the player is putting and the caddie holding the flagstick doesn’t remove it in time and the ball hits the pin and incurred a two shot penalty........is that the golfers fault as well?.......NO it was the caddies job to remove the pin.
It is true when it comes down to it, it is the player's responsibility to double check to see if has 14 clubs. How do you not notice you have an extra driver, not like an extra wedge hiding amongst all the other wedges.
@@A-FrameWedge the first hole is a par three. If it was a par four or five where he was hitting a driver then he could have removed it before he hit his first shot.
Rod Smith That really doesn’t matter, you don’t hit driver on a lot of 1st holes as many times golf architects want to ease you into the round. The thing is Woosman was playing that week with only 2 woods in the bag, a driver and a 3w, he should of noticed their was a another longest club in the bag. Not only that but it is the final round of a major why is he screwing around with another driver on the range?

Gary Player bowed out gracefully, didn't he? Old Gary Player, wasn't he great? He was so great that in his home country, he had nothing to say for decades in opposition to the cruelty of apartheid. Nope. Instead, he introduced the Sun Tour, while Nelson Mandela languished in prison and Steven Biko, among many others, was too busy to applaud GP because he was being beaten to death by the authorities. Some time after Mandela was finally released, released after 27 years of prison in the most heinous conditions, Old Gary decided to get on the right side of history. What a guy, eh, Old GP! But, not to relinquish his historic allegiance to white privilege, Gary Player accepted a Presidential Medal of Freedom from one Donald J. Trump. When was that? That was on Jan 7, 2021 - ring any bells? Him and Her Highness, Annika Sorenstam. Can't blame you for not knowing - it was kind of uncovered by the media, considering what had transpired the day before - you know, the attempted coup orchestrated from within. But hey, Good Ole Gary Player! What a bastion of human rights, what a stand-up guy speaking out for equality, what a spokesperson for freedom! Yay GP! What a dick.
David was a much loved champion who achieved his dream that can never be taken away.

great winners speech, such a top guy.
Brilliant narration.
Ice cool Duval showed more emotion shooting 59.
This is a fantastic series. Nothing like the Open... anywhere in the world.
The cream rises to the top at The Open, true champions win at the open,
Ben Curtis? Todd Hamilton?
Man i want this guy to win again! He will get it done on the Champions Tour later this year hopefully!!
He just had a T3 finish yesterday, seems like he's getting better again.

Duval swing was a masterpiece if it wasn’t for his injuries he would have been #1 for long time with lots of majors
Hats off to Duval and Woosnam
Can you please please upload 2011 open with Darren Clarke's win plz!

Best job that week....the lone bobby on first tee 😊😅

In those days parnavik played so good in the open every year
Honestly I think the way he lost at Augusta motivated him to win here
Yup❤

Now i know why Duval allways wears shades.. he's the kid playing banjo in Deliverance.

1000 sit ups a day will do that. Where he gets time to practice I’ll never know.
His plant based diet helps
