Haha very true. If you’re somebody that America and Belgium is fond of, you’re a sell out. Belgium made its fortune off of the rubber trade in the Congo.
@pajfarfar He did sing and narrated heavy metal music for rhapsody of fire and his own album Charlemagne: by the sword and cross and its sequals. Among many others. He also didnt need much help (aside from one move a human couldn't do anyway) with light sabre fighting in star wars as he could actually saber fight. He was in his 80s.
Not too long before he died, he and his daughter got in as passengers in my dad's cab. His daughter had to do all the talking as he was so sick he couldn't speak. Such a shame that my dad had him in his cab but couldn't hear that wonderful voice.
I am almost Phd level in Congolese history, have visited the country...but every time I watch am still intrigued, disturbed and wonder if there's not more than a spiritual jinx to the Congolese debacle, isn't this why half a century later everyone, because of the complexity goes back to Conrad's really 'simplistic' assessment; that whatever happens/whatever spirit runs the Congo, is the heart of darkness? I am almost accepting that the spell binding the Congo in strife is undoable!
You have captured the very essence of what seems to be ailing us! Pure evil darkness! Coz no way a people will go through all these macabre atrocities all these years!

This feels like a highly appropriate documentary to come out at the time of our recent and blatantly rigged elections in the RSA... "Giving cattle herds to people who couldn't tell a bull from a cow" is also such an on point remark for much of the continent. It seems as though most African countries share the story of the Congo to a greater or lesser extent: Raped, bled and brutalized from both the outside and the inside with equal rapaciousness. As for Mobutu himself, I suspect he cared for his country with all the depth of love that a narcissistic serial rapist feels for their victims.
A fascinating story of the birth of a nation. On the scale of history, the Congo is a very young country, an assembly of tribal people who were not even aware of the existence of each other when their "country" was being pieced together. The initiator of this assembling, of this building is none other than the king of the Belgians, Leopold II. He was driven by his desire to create a "Colony", for his kingdom. His success was by no means assured, we now see that it did not, in the long term. Back in 1897, the English-Canadian doctor, captain of the EIC, (not yet named The Congo) Sydney Landford Hinde, wrote in his book "The Fall of the Congo Arabs", had the Arabs (slave traders) succeeded against Leopold II's efforts, the EIC (l'Etat Independent du Congo) would probably have become a Musulman Empire similar to the Soudanise Khalifat. A little history that may dampen the condemnations of the different players in the creation of the Republic Democratic of Congo.
