The Honda Civic Si, new for this year, slots in between the Civic Sport, which we tested in 2017, and the track-ready Type R, which we drove at Road Atlanta. With 205 HP (easily tunable for more) from the 1.5T engine and a starting price of just $24,000, the Si could be a winner.
Check out the Civic Sport Here:

I screwed up on when the first Civic Si hit America. I knew the CRX Si came to us in 1985, but was lookin for the first date we got a coupe or sedan, and I missed a line mentioning the Si went on a hatch in 1986. 4th repeats 3rd, where we got the CRX Si first, then a hatch Si 1 year later. I’m a dumb.- ZK

Just focus and write down some talking points. Less is more. Things people can look up on wikipedia they aren't interested in. They want to know how it feels. How the chassis feels. Tires, suspension. etc. We know the specs show us the heart of the car.

Zack go home and let Matt do these one takes...The best part with Matt was that he'd be able to compare this civic to 100s of other normal, exotic and insane cars. And let's just say Matt's irreplaceable and you're like every other of the 1000 car reviews on youtube.

In my opinion, it’s the perfect car for people who want a daily driver that has all the necessities with Apple CarPlay, blind spot with the lane watch, 10 speaker stereo, touchscreen display, LCD instrument cluster but also for someone who wants to have fun driving. I just got a 2018 coupe and I think if you buy this you need the coupe the sedan looks too boxy and the spoiler is too small.

The shifting on my wife’s2018 Si seems to have gotten better and better with time. When new it felt like seriously rubber bushed, but after about 5m k miles or so it has improved dramatically. While still not as mechanically notchy as my 86’s it’s very very good. We really love this car! As good as this car is for the money, it’s hard to believe. Our payment is so low, it feels like we got away with something.

We had a 2009 Si, we absolutely loved it. Didn’t want to get rid of it but, we needed a truck. The problem came when it was time to sell. Literally HUNDREDS of people looked at it, loved it UNTIL they opened the door and saw the stick. Out of all those people, I think two-three could drive a stick. ONE guy made me a low ball offer, but I told him for 200 less I would trade it in to avoid all the paper work with selling it. I miss it so much, best shifter in any car I have ever owned. Actually, you don't have to put the blinker on to activate Honda lanewatch. There's a button on the blinker stalk that activates it. Also, it allows you to disable it if you have your turn signal on and you dont want it(for example you want to the signal on but need to access the screen)-
I have an 18 si coupe. It's an amazing value. The lsd really helps pull through the turns.

I’ve driven only Honda manuals my whole life. At sea level and under 50 degrees weather it can hit 0-60 in just under six seconds with a HARD launch. The only thing that limits it is 2nd tops out at 57mph. But speed isn’t why you buy this car, it handles so well. The 63% front bias weight distribution allows the rear to kick out under aggressive turns. Mountain passes are so enjoyable in this car.
Also with just a tune the car can get about 40hp. Factor that in and it’s one of the best bang for the buck cars on the market.

Im glad people are sleeping on this car, they can keep vaping in their garbage wrx's. I owend a 16, the stock tune in that thing was shit, and that motor constantly pulls timing. you get like 1-2 good pulls, then the motor is heat soaked and just pulls timing. AWD with open diffs too. I put a cobb access port on it, made it a little better, but again still pulling tons of timing due to false knock readings. Got an STI, was much better, but rattled itself to pieces. Stereo was absolute shit etc. Subarus are all about that simplicity, which i get, but at some point those interiors just get old. Not to mention the weak rods in the FA, and the constant ringland failure in the STI. I love subaru as a brand, but they really short change the american consumer. Pretty crazy that a honda eco motor 1.5T comes with forged pistons and a 36-43k subaru sports car does not. Traded in my 17 STI for an 18 SI, and other than the AWD system, it was an UG all around. Dont miss my subarus one bit.

i own a 17 si and they are MUCH more fun than this video makes them seem. so much grip and very lightweight. very sorted car, and those of you complaining about the turbo, it’s still very free-revving, and if you know how to drive it you will always be in boost, because it’s such a small turbo. anyone who owns one can back me up on this.

    • @skifree0
      @skifree0 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Also own a 17 Si. From a drivers perspective, it is absolutely excellent. Acceleration is great, teh shifter is good (but I do see what they meant with the lack of a solid feel). Steering and brakes are freaking unbelievable for this price. You feel so confident with braking and turn in, and for a car this size it is surprisingly light on its feet.
The only small issue I have is a sixth-tenths launch is pretty hard to get smoothly. With the rev-hang, short 1st gear, and kind of numb clutch, it is very hard shift fast and smooth at the same time. Granted this is a very minor point and if you want to launch hard with zero regards to comfort. My ideal way of having fun (while keeping mostly within the law), is just to short shift into second, and have all your fun from there.

The engine doesn't feel special. I think as more cars are powered by little turbo engines, they can feel very similar.
However, I also wonder if I/we are always skeptical of new things. They say it takes three years for a new SNL cast to be accepted by the SNL audience. Every time there's a new cast, people talk down on them. For 3 years. I'm trying to analyze if that's my position with cars.
I need to drive the old Sis again to really know. I will say this engine, while strong, had no drama or occasion to it.

There are two features that I'd like added to that spec sheet: 1) a hatch and 2) black plastic corner panel delete. Regarding the gauges, Honda has done great, simple gauges for years that can't cost them much. Simple, readable, usable numbers and markings. Honda makes an active choice to sh*t up the gauge cluster in their Civics, unfortunately.
I'm not convinced that engine drone and wheeze is what I'd want to hear in a daily, but maybe that can be tuned out. I'd imagine that the power is plenty for a single driver on their daily commute. The fuel economy certainly seems attractive.
Happen to look at 2018 base VW GTI pricing the other day and the price point is essentially the same as the Si (dealerships are aggressively pricing the GTIs). The comparison is not 1:1 as the GTI is missing the LSD and adaptive suspension, but it has similar if not better power plant specs and the utility of a hatch.
Can TST get a hold of a base, MT GTI for a romp in the hills?

  • @erichaynes7502

I have a 17 Civic Si, it's my 5th Honda definitely way, way better than my 2000 Si, couldn't stand that car. Shifting is a little plasticky but it did get a lot better after 10k. All Honda's should have perfect shifting, this does not. I drove this across country, it was an absolute 2,800 mile blast. You really have to pay attention to keep the speed under 85-90, this Si just wants to fly and there is plenty of power to do so. Fastest I ever got it up to was 124, pretty easy to get there too. Honestly it's hard for me to tell any difference in Sport mode, it ALWAYS feels like it's in Sport mode.
So yeah, driving this Si is a very good experience. It seems a more adult sporty car with a manual than a ricer for sure..that's good for old fogies like me but maybe not so good for guys in their 20's.
As far as the interior goes it's definitely driver centric, some of the material is hard to clean but the seats are the best..none of the other Civic's have as nice of seats cept' maybe the leather version. Infotainment isn't very good but all cars have crummy infotainment/audio systems and you can't replace this one with an aftermarket which really sucks. Of course you can add an amp and sub and it's badly needed in this car.
I do agree this is the best Civic ever with the possible truism that it's lost a little soul. The turbo is great but doesn't sound great like the VTEC's. It's not a big deal to me but it may be to enthusiasts. It's very quick, very smooth, very quiet and it looks closer to a sporty Accord than a Civic. Best seats ever and sails over most bumps in the road. The fact that like most Honda's this Si keeps it's resale value puts it over the top in the value category. The one and only glaring issue with this Si is that it doesn't come as a hatchback. If anyone has a Civic Sport Hatch and wants to swap for a month just let me know. I'd love to try one of those out for comparison!

I have been a Toyota buyer for the last 20 years, because they just keep going and going. My current car is a 2006 Camry SE V6. At 130K, my car has never been to a mechanic until recently when it developed a minor power steering leak. My daughter is turning 18 soon and I will be turning the car over to her. I am in the market for a 2018 Camry SE, but recently saw the new Si, did some research, and last week test drove one. Man I can't believe that is a 1.5L! It has almost the same power has my 3.3L Camry SE, and it is pretty quick, the shifting is so smooth. It is about $4K less than the Camry SE and gets about the same MPG. At $22,300, you can't beat that price, I think I'm going to buy it!

could be where you live also, i live in a wide open state and do a lot of 65mph driving. as of posting i'm averaging 33.8 over 3800 miles. i personally let it rev quite a bit, keeping it in the power zone of 2500+ rpm, short shifting and trying to continue accelerating below the power zone kills my gas mileage

I owned a 2007 SI and prefer the way it looked. This model looks better than the previous generation. The BIGGEST improvement of the newest SI is the gas mileage. It has about the same HP and torque as my 2007 but gets 38 or so on the highway rather than 28 (like the Type R!). Not sure if this requires hi-test gas, but mine did.

I drove one back to back with the new Type-R and I've owned or driven almost every gen of Si. I generally love them, but I really couldn't get into this one. It feels built well, comfortable down the road, easy to drive, it makes a great DD. What it has in quality it lost in it's character/rawness that I love about the Si line.

This car is a fine balance between fun and comfortable, but my one big problem with it is it sounds so boring. And it doesn't sound much better with an exhaust. Great sounding engines and exhaust notes is a Major part of driving excitement. I mean a top of the line Tesla might be as fast as a Gt350 but anyone outside of San Francisco would pick a Gt350 to have fun in 100 times outta 100.

I test drove this car last year. It just didn't positively impress me. It is thrashy loud and doesn't accelerate in a way that matches the racket. I am a 6 time and current Honda owner, currently driving a V6 coupe. I've had 3 Si's of the Civic and CRX varieties. I was far more impressed with those cars when they were new than the current Si. Honda really should have installed the 2.0l version from the Accord. That would have been very impressive.

I keep hearing about these Earth Dream engines having problems with fuel mixing with the oil and diluting it. Also, Honda only sells them in the American market as it's a known issue and other countries don't want it. I'd go for an old Si until they figure out the issue.

I've been in the market for a 2018 Honda Civic si and was wondering what type of fuel you put in it. I know the owner's manual states that the car should receive premium, but can it take regular? Furthermore, I think the car has a knock sensor that changes the ignition timing caused by the difference in the fuel quality. Still, I would like to eliminate knocking altogether to preserve the engine.
