First time listener. How did I never hear of this composer before? Great sound, energy, yet smooth.

Pay attention to all Ginastera's compositions. You'll find a treasure in this Argentinean composer.

It's amazing how he creates such a full sound from a reduced wind and brass section

Love this music and I have done so ever since I got the LP in 1970 with Boston Symphony and Erich Leinsdorf. They recorded it for RCA who has never released it on CD, for some very strange reason. This version with Zander is wonderful!

The look on the face of the principle bassoon at the end of the clarinet variation is priceless. I think you have to be a clarinet player to understand it.

Wonderful music, great performance, horrendous camera work, in the opening of the work we could not see the clarinetist playing her solos very well, because the head of the flutist was on the way, and the camera dude would not move to take a different, apparently the camera director has no idea of directing cameras at a classical music performance, again horrendous camera work...

I hate the camera work on these programs. Why do we have to stare at the cellist when the harpist is playing a fantastic solo?

Definitely too much for the principal clarinetist to handle, this is the slowest "scherzo" I've ever heard.

      So what?

Scherzo is not a tempo marking, it is a character word. A scherzo is usually quite fast but this one can't be played faster. I have heard this music with many orchestras and no one plays it faster.

There is a tradeoff between tempo and execution. Most faster renditions I’ve heard end up very sloppy in the clarinet. This is a slower tempo (though well within the range I’ve heard for the clarinet variation - one of the gold standards is the Robert Marcellus / Cleveland recording at nearly the same tempo), but it is very clean and well executed by the clarinetist. Perhaps listen to a few more recordings if you want to see how consistently others have butchered the high run or dragged (and then rushed) through the gymnastics towards the end. Very nice job by the clarinet here in my opinion.
