  • Data shows car theft hit a historic high nationwide in 2022 with more than a million vehicles stolen. If it’s like prior years, hundreds of thousands of vehicles will never be recovered and many will be trafficked out of the country.

Back when I was doing my Masters degree at Berkeley, one of my professors told us of this story of how one time his daughter's 2012 Chevy Malibu was stolen, whilst her laptop was in it.
2 years later in December 2016, a random guy from Saudi Arabia showed up at her home in Seattle and told her that her car is now in Saudi Arabia, he bought it from a dealership there (he didn't know it was stolen when he bought it) but he found her laptop tucked away in the back of her car.
He basically looked through her laptop, looked through her photos, videos, diary notes and social media (as her Facebook was still logged in on her laptop), and he basically fell in love with her so he opted to just invite himself to the States to go and meet her. He said he wanted to get to know her better, invited her to come visit him in Saudi Arabia as he does come from a wealthy family and maybe start dating.
She politely declined his offer, he accepted her decision and parted ways.
Still crazy though that her car ended up all the way in the Middle East.

This story sounds fishy. Cars do not just end up in Saudi Arabia. Anyone who knows Saudi Arabia well could tell it’s a fake story. People in Saudia Arabia are not interested in some second-hand Malibu. The laptop could be accessed without password? This story is not made up very well.

My neighbors new Jeep Patriot was stolen right from their driveway, no broken glass, it was a remote start vehicle. The teenagers took it and drove in a rectangle (on city streets) at speeds of 90mph for 3 hours before ditching the vehicle in the middle of the street with all doors open.
I think it's time we start looking at vehicle manufacturers to improve the safety of vehicles < looks over at Kia & Hyundai >.

It's a huge, sophisticated ring that involve low-level people 'boosting' the cars, and then shop people who create a new metal plate with a fake VIN or a VIN from an actual similar car that might have been salvage titled, and then tow truck drivers and forklift operators, container truck drivers, and even people working on a ship who are all part of it. And then a boss overseas calling the shots and asking for particular models of cars. I saw another documentary on it. It's pretty daunting to stop all of that.
