    I just picked up a barrell pick here in alabama and its probably one of my most favorite ever. This has all the ingredients of an amazing drink. Cheers to all!

    Supposedly Gret Metz asked for what were initially custom mashbills from MGP for their high malt bourbon, wheat whiskey, and wheated bourbon, with those distillates now being readily available to companies that source from MGP now.

    Taking some of the whiskey and pouring it into your hands, and then rubbing it around and catching a scent is one of the best ideas I’ve ever heard of when speaking about bourbon. I won’t get a notification but man that is spot on

    Re: checking alcohol in bags. The legal limit is 5L in the US. I do it all the time (live in TX, company HQ is in Kentucky) and have never had a problem with transporting bottles. My biggest concern has always been keeping them secure and protected. So I buy those wine bottle protectors at liquor stores that’s essentially a bag of bubble wrap. However, if I can’t find that, I take some hotel towels and wrap it up. Thanks Marriott!

    I just recently tried Old Elk for the first time. My impressions are somewhat similar to y'all's, but I found it to be 1) VERY sweet tasting. It was like drinking a bourbon that had been aged in a molasses barrel. 2) it was both strong and smooth. This has become my go-to sipping whiskey. It's strong enough that I can comfortably drink it slowly, but it's also delish enough that straight is just fine (instead of assuming that it would be a cocktail ingredient). Unfortunately, I found it at my local Package store running @ $75 per 750 ml bottle. Since I am poor, I will continue to try saving up to get a bottle.

      So...you didn't mention whether we were supposed to pour it on the sting or drink it. I tried half and half and it definitely worked. Had a weird headache the next day but I think that's from the sting.

    Good Morning MB's

  • @Brad-ic4bp
    @Brad-ic4bp ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Living in Colorado for 4 years now, I've managed to avoid CO bourbons, but I finally broke down and bought a store pick of this, and I like it a lot. Granted, I'd prefer it wasn't sourced (I mean, is it really "Colorado" bourbon if it was distilled in Indiana?). I think it's only forgivable if they ARE distilling their own whisky in Fort Collins, but just haven't gotten to the point where they can bottle 4-year+ bourbon that they made onsite.

    • @joshboyd6570
      @joshboyd6570 ปีที่แล้ว

      I picked up a bottle of 291's Experimental batch a few weeks ago. I am really enjoying it. It's really different. Nose and Taste is way different than your typical bourbon.

    • @RichardMoore-h4w
      @RichardMoore-h4w ปีที่แล้ว

      Why would you avoid Colorado Whiskey?

  • @B1gC4st
    @B1gC4st 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Daniel, you are incorrect. The Old Elk Wheated Bourbon recipe that is distilled under contract [read: not source] is proprietary to Old Elk. All of the mashbills for Old Elk were developed by Metz under contract while he was still at MGP. Except the Rye, that's standard 95/5.
    You guys got this wrong.

    • @PhatTrumpet2
      @PhatTrumpet2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Okay, but if it's "proprietary" to Old Elk, why are other craft distilleries like Crowded Barrel sourcing it as "MGP wheated bourbon?" Does Old Elk get a cut of the profits every time someone else buys their proprietary mashbill from MGP?
      (I'm not doubting you; I'd just like to understand how all this works a little better.)

    • @B1gC4st
      @B1gC4st 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PhatTrumpet2 in part it's not the same mash bill. A true mash bill also involves Yeast. And Yes, MGP has sold a Wheated Bourbon mash bill to craft distillers, doesn't mean it's the same.
      Now if it's just a sourced Barrel? All of Old Elk's contracted barrel stock are in MGP Warehouses. They distill in Fort Collins, but only their liqueurs. And companies buy and sell barrels all the time.

    I am totally with you on the sleight of hand. There is NO reason that someone in Colorado to buy whiskey from out of state, unless you are going do a personalized blend (a la Mythology). There is too much good whiskey totally sourced in Colorado to wasted time on re-packaged Indiana or Kentucky stuff.

    Yeah you know what, I have a bottle of this same MGP sourced bourbon bottled by an outfit in Austin TX and it's really good. I was a little disappointed at first that it was MGP, and that the age statement is only two years, but the real reason I bought it was that it has almost 3x as much wheat as Makers Mark and over 2x what's in Rebel Yell 100, two of my favorite bourbons because apparently I love wheaters. After trying it I'm not disappointed any more. I enjoy the taste, it smells good, it was under $30, and I'm not a Texan so IDGAF that it wasn't actually distilled in Texas. I look forward to trying more expressions of the MGP sourced wheated bourbon, hopefully a couple years older next time. And considering how much I like this bourbon that's a whopping 45% wheat I'm curious how much I'd like Woodford Reserve's actual "wheat whiskey" that's only 51% wheat. I'm betting I'll love that one too.

    I once suffered from a drive by caking. My wife and I were parked, opened the hatchback (3 kids in safety seats in the car). A vehicle full of teenagers zoomed by with the “bomber” leaning out of the passenger window. His aim was perfect, a chocolate eclair exploded in the car decorating three kids, the car and us. We howled with laughter. Can’t help feeling that the kid had a voice in his ear saying “ Use the petty-force Luke”…
