    I like some of the Old Elk line up. Easy to find in my area.

      It's going to be interesting to see if they start using their own distillate across their lineup or if they're going to continue sourcing from MGP. They're super easy to find and there's a lot of it in my area as well.

    Id recommend the Wheated Bourbon single barrel picks, they are so delicious!

      A few people have said the same thing. I have seen them, but passed because I have 5 bottles already. Once a few of them are drained I'll get one. Cheers!

    I have a store pick of this that is excellent. Amped up proof brings out more of the flavor.

      I thought that would be the case. I have seen Total Wine and More store picks recently and thought about picking them up, but I have 5 bottles of Old Elk now. I think I will wait until at least 2 or 3 of the bottles are empty before I get another. Cheers!

    Great review. I had a bottle of Old Elk Wheated Bourbon and gave it to my brother who loves Wheated bourbons. I did pick up the Old Elk Cigar Cut for myself, but have not cracked it open yet. 🥃

      The cigar cut sounds interesting. Is it still distilled in Indiana?

    Found some single barrel store pick 6.5 year 119.5 proof for $75 in MA.

      I'm going to have to pick up a store pick soon. A lot of people are saying they are good. Cheers!

    I have to say, I agree with your assessment on this one 💯. I paid $90 for mine and it was 115.5 proof. Old Elk Wheated Bourbon, but private select. It looked just like your bottle.
    Even though it tasted fine.. It was nothing spectacular. It's a skip for me as well, especially for the price.

    • @whiskeyisajourney
      @whiskeyisajourney  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for sharing. The other bottles in the line up are better so I will go for those over this one for sure. Cheers!

    I enjoyed the standard old elk wheat and I agree with your assessment. I’ve recently added an old elk wheated bourbon 8 year to my cabinet and I wonder if that age and extra proof can be a Cherry on top of sorts

    • @whiskeyisajourney
      @whiskeyisajourney  ปีที่แล้ว

      I went crazy with buying just about every bottle they had. I like what they are doing and I am interested to see what they do with their own stuff.

    The OLD ELK Double Wheat is next on my list. Until then, Wyoming Double Cask (68% corn, 20% wheat, 12% barley) @ 50% ABV finished in PX will do just fine.

    • @whiskeyisajourney
      @whiskeyisajourney  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Wyoming Whiskey is great. I have not seen the Double Cask, but the Old Elk Double Wheat is in the running for my 2023 whiskey of the year.

    Great timing! I just got an Old Elk single barrel store pick at 112 proof that I haven't opened yet. Ordered online since they don't sell in my state. Looking forward to it after hearing your thoughts. I do love me a sweet bourbon 😉

      Please let me know what you think of it when you get it. I have 2 Old Elk videos coming out in the next few weeks. My wheated whiskey part 2 has two Old Elk bottles in it and then the first Friday in May I am doing a flight of 5 Old Elks. Cheers.

      @@whiskeyisajourney So I had some last night, sipping a bit right now and I would say the flavor is... nice? Lightly sweet and no off flavors, but nothing that really stands out. However, it drinks WAY hotter than its 112 proof. I would have guessed in the 125+ range. Hard to pick out the flavors through the burn. Adding a little water doesn't tone it down much. I'll see if it opens up with more time, but right now it's a miss for me.

    • @whiskeyisajourney

    Great review, Peter. Thanks for sharing. I have not had any Old Elk, but I was somewhat intrigued with the wheated bourbon. Appreciate your review and honesty! I was hesitant to pay this much for a sub 100 proof wheated bourbon, and I think you confirmed my thoughts. For this proof range, I think I’ll stick with Makers 46. Cheers!

    • @whiskeyisajourney
      @whiskeyisajourney  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Their Straight Wheat Whiskey ($79.99 and 6 years old) and the Double Wheat ($109.99) are better in my opinion and come in at 100 and 107.1 proof.

    Thanks for the review, I haven't tried this one yet. I would love to hear one other opinion about this product and others in the future. As you said it's good and since I haven't yet tried the Old Elk line it might be a good choice for me, but is it also worth the price for someone to try out. - For me the value is very important, for example I just purchased Redbrest 12yr CS for $100.00 that's worth it to me, Redbrest 12yr is $77.00 in my market, but still worth it to me. In my market Old Elk Wheated is $65.00 I can think of a lot of options in that price range that I really like. It seems like there are more and more options that are a one time buy, good but I will not buy again. So a good opinion like yours is always welcome, thanks for the help!

    • @whiskeyisajourney
      @whiskeyisajourney  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think this is the best Old Elk has in their lineup, but it's one of the less expensive. I really like the Double Wheat and Four Grain, but they are over $100, but IMO worth it.

    I prefer wheated bourbons. I see this on the shelf all the time, but haven't tried it yet. I do wish it was a bit higher proof to just give more of a bold taste. Still, I think I'll pick it up next time. The only downside is that it does tend to be a bit pricey.

    • @whiskeyisajourney
      @whiskeyisajourney  ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree it is pricey and the higher proof offerings are even more. The Double Wheat is my favorite and is in the running for my whiskey of the year in 2023.

  • @mikem4432
    @mikem4432 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    It has 45% wheat which is way higher than almost anything on the shelf.. that is also a wheater.. so get it if you like a HEAVY SWEET WHEATER.. otherwise skip it mostly due to the price. so if you like smooth, and nice.. buy it.. but its more of a desert sipper.. IMO

    • @whiskeyisajourney
      @whiskeyisajourney  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    What makes a bourbon o wow good?
    In your opinion.
    Lots of wood characteristics from aging?
    Or just in the mash bill.

    • @whiskeyisajourney
      @whiskeyisajourney  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm starting to lean towards higher proof pours with dark fruit notes with a chocolate finish. Subtle amounts of spice with good oak notes, but not a lot.

    Interestingly, the only exposure to Old Elk I've had is via their Infinity Blend for 2021. I thought it was good but very overpriced. I've heard others rave about the Old Elk Double Wheat. It sounds that at least for wheated bourbon, I don't have to be in a rush to try the standard offering..

    • @whiskeyisajourney
      @whiskeyisajourney  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Double Wheat is one of my favorites from Old Elk and is in the mix for my 2023 whiskey of the year. I will not get the Infinity blend due to the price and what other reviews have said about it. I am going to wait to see what the 2023 blend turns out to be.

    Just tried it and hated it. Found this review while I was searching for what others thought of it and for a sanity check since this brand is very popular here in Colorado. Aroma is somewhat medicinal -- but not like heavy peated scotches can get (which I enjoy otherwise). Rather this just Old Elk Wheated Bourbon just weak all the way around -- start to finish. I'll finish the bottle but this is a hard "skip it" for me in the future.
