Excellent overview. Thanks. I am thinking about getting an adult radio and the R75 is really high on my list. I do have a question. I have seen elsewhere using the MFJ1020 as a preselector and bought one just for that purpose. I am very happy with it. My question, do you use a external power supply for the 1020? If so, can you recommend one? I currently use batteries but I am looking into a power adapter. Thank you.
+Steven Poleske Sorry that I am just getting around to responding. The 1020 does not take an external power supply. It uses a 9 volt battery inside. I cannot recommend it enough as a preselector. I hated it as an active antenna (in retrospect, I don't really care for those indoor active antennas, with the partial exception of the Sony An-LP 1 on 25 meters and above).
do you know what would cause a chuff noise when I am turning the dial ? it's in the same spot on the tuning dial at all times... sounds like a choo choo train when I spin the dial for a few rotations.....
well I have this receiver [icom r 75] but for the last 8or9 yrs, its just been sitting up in my apartment because I really don't know how to use this receiver. a friend of mine died about 11yrs ago,and his wife sold me his icom r75. but I lived in an apartment and about 8 yrs ago I brought a indoor antenna for this receiver. but I just heard you say this receiver don't like indoor antennas. oh well! but I've heard some things on it though.
Just got the ic-r75. all i can hear is AM 640 commercial. Would the Apex Radio active antenna be worth it since I cannot run anything outside of my small apartment ? There are mfj models but i havent seen them being recommended. My receiver is deaf. Those loop antennas sound good but they are too expensive. is the AR unit worth the $180?
+michael hartley The Apex Radio active antenna does not work well with the R-75 at all. The R-75 has a robust front-end that really needs at least a randomwire antenna outside. Can you get any length of wire outside your apartment?
I doubt it. I might be able to slip some wire out alongside the cable service coax. Cant put it out through the window. How short of a randomwire can I get away with? If I can pass it through where my cable comes in I might be able to route some wire upwards but I cannot really be out there with a ladder and drawing attention. I really prefer not going outside at all but I understand why that is best way to go. I was thinking maybe this: www.mfjenterprises.com/Product.php?productid=mfj-1622 I'm in Los Angeles and I just bought a mint ic-r75 off of ebay for $450 shipped, that they purchased in Feb of this year. I'm going to try to get that wire outside in stealth mode. I don't want neighbors or apartment manager noticing anything. Thanks for your channel and responding here with advice. Hey, did you move to China ? Regards, Mike Hartley
Hi Spencer, can the wire be small diameter wire? I might be able to get 300 ohm twin lead to slip past the screen on my window but coax wont go. And do I have to connect a ground or will a single wire work? Also, do you know of a frequency I shouldn't have any problem hearing here in Los Angeles? I have a lot to learn. I had a Zenith tube radio when I was young that had shortwave that picked up well on about a 10 ft length of wire. I wish I still had that old radio. It had a wood body with wood knobs and round cool-looking dial and pointer behind glass.
The 1622 looks promising. It is going to work best if you can get it at least partially outside. If you are stuck with inside options, ive heard good things about Wellbrook active loops, and Apex Radio makes an indoor active model that is more heavy duty. Let me see if I can find it. And yes, I did move to China, and still live in Beijing. :)
Thank you for those tips!

Have you tried the active loop antennas with your R75? I am thinking of buying the R75, but I am limited to an indoor space.
