Some thoughts on the self-fulfilling prophecy of poor HF conditions
Sound of Hope from Tawan rx in Beijing on 20 meters. Conditions are bad, but don't believe the naysayers. DX can absolutely still happen even with the SFI at rock bottom!

I'm BACK. Vatican Radio rx in Beijing at 13:02 z
มุมมอง 1056 ปีที่แล้ว
I was able to pick up Vatican Radio in Mandarin on 31 (not 39, as I incorrectly said, derp) meters this evening from a tx in the Phillipines, some 2800 kilomters away from my home in downtown Beijing. The time was at 13:02z. The clock on my 880 is incorrect. I need to get my life in order. :-P More videos and an update coming soon! 73s

First time to pull in this station in Beijing. Using my new rig, that I am loving, for reasons I briefly go into. Also using the Sony AN-LP 1, my go-to antenna!
Radio Thailand received in Beijing on PL-660: Whip vs AN-LP 1

Once again, the AN-LP 1 proves its worth. Radio Thailand is probably my favorite shortwave station to listen to every morning here in Beijing with my coffee!

Tom Stiles! I want you to try out this antenna! I think it is great for receiving in places where conditions are otherwise tough. It cuts down on atmospheric noise really well. And thanks so much for finding me on the bands!!!

THANKS MY FRIEND... 1 BIG HUG OF BRASIL 🇧🇷👍😁 FOR YOU AND ALL FRIENDS. LIKE FULL... 👊😎
You need more subscribers, sir. This is informative stuff. So I subscribed. Cheers and happy holidays.👍🌲🕯🌲
It's all about the antenna,,,if you have a radio worth 10 g,,,and a few feet of wire,,,it ain't gonna work WELL,,,,if you have a half decent reciever or sdr,,,and a couple hundred feet of simple longwire,,,you'll pull in the WORLD, in almost every mode,,,,always about the antenna,,,,my call is NV1H,,,,I have the r 75,,,among MANY other receivers, and its hands down, one of my favorite, military grade recievers!!,,,great vid,,,,😎
Hello Sir, can this receiver also work in CB band FM modus (in Europe from 27.000-27.400Mc) Many thanks, Alain
Hello my friend Very nice study, do you know which audio processors use CRI in their Shortwave emissions? I ask you the question because the sound is very nice of all its emissions and you who are in the studio surely know or some engineer can answer me. I will appreciate your answer. Greetings from Buenos Aires Norberto
Great video's...One question please how did you get the word AIRGAIN on your screen
Hi excellent advice, very informative well done Regards Tim
Nice SW reception :) Thanks for sharing 73!
do you know what would cause a chuff noise when I am turning the dial ? it's in the same spot on the tuning dial at all times... sounds like a choo choo train when I spin the dial for a few rotations.....
I know this is an old post but I'll still put my 2 cents worth of comment in. I have the original one they made, the MFJ 1020A. My shack is in the basement & at this time I have 2 outdoor random wire antennas & 2 indoor antennas going up to the attic. When I bought the 1020A to use on an auxiliary ham receiver I didn't think much of it & put it aside. After 27 years in the military it got buried & I recently re-found it again. I have 2 Sangean ATS 909X receivers & decided to try it again. I hooked it up to one of the indoor antennas & was pleasantly surprised. I never used the whip so I can't compare it. I also have a MFJ random wire tuner & tried it together with the 1020A. With the random wire tuned through the tuner & then into the 1020A I can, at times, receive signals better than the other receiver on either of the 2 outdoor antennas. At least now I'm putting 2 pieces of equipment to use. The 1020A is really put together badly. The antenna connectors are bad & they use RCA jacks. Really some sloppy workmanship throughout. When I get ambitious I'll change the connectors & make everything inside more rigid. I use a 9 volt power supply to power it. My other 909X is attached to a huge Dentron ham radio antenna tuner which is bigger than both radios put together but there again I'm using equipment that I no longer had use for. 73. KB9IN.
Here in Germany VOK reception is quite sh!tty even when they broadcast to Germany every evening... btw I am using a Sony ICF-SW11
Buy a Tecsun loop antenna for about 20 dollars.
what about SSB HAM listening? random LW work? i'm thinking of getting the R75 too.. but don't have fancy antennas...just a wire and a dream lol.....
Nice demonstration. 73
well I have this receiver [icom r 75] but for the last 8or9 yrs, its just been sitting up in my apartment because I really don't know how to use this receiver. a friend of mine died about 11yrs ago,and his wife sold me his icom r75. but I lived in an apartment and about 8 yrs ago I brought a indoor antenna for this receiver. but I just heard you say this receiver don't like indoor antennas. oh well! but I've heard some things on it though.
Nice receiver and good cach from Australia. 55+73 Frank. You have a Abo from me.
Some of your information is correct, but some of it is a little misinformed. 1) The NB filter is for pulsed noise such as vehicle ignition noise. It will do absolutely nothing for broadcast, amateur, even alien signals as long as the noise masking the signal isn’t a square wave, and its inability to help here has nothing to do with the bandwidth of the signal. 2) Your technique for reducing RF gain and only applying it until the signal pops out of the noise is correct. However, this technique works with or without the AGC. The fading of the signal as observed in this video would benefit from leaving the AGC on but setting it to a slow setting. 3) The preamps only benefit at higher frequencies, because they can raise weak (and strong) signal levels above (and way above) those of the receiver’s internal thermal noise. On the lower bands, atmospheric noise dominates and the receiver’s sensitivity is not enhanced by a LNAs. 4) The noise reduction works on any kind of noise, whether artificial, atmospheric, or thermal. It’s a digital filter, and as such the correct setting is the value that reduces the most noise without sacrificing intelligibility, however, personal preference may vary especially when used in conjunction with the features mentioned above. For example, on my IC-7100, with the RF gain at maximum, 1st preamp turned on, and AGC set to the default slow setting of a 6 second decay, I’ve found that a NR level of 4 to 6 produces a dramatic result while copying weak SSB signals on the 20m band. This should hold also work when receiving AM broadcast in an exalted carrier mode.
Agreed, whilst the solar index can be helpful I usually just turn on the radio and tune around anyway...
Have you tried the active loop antennas with your R75? I am thinking of buying the R75, but I am limited to an indoor space.
I Pic up that station in North East Pennsylvania clearly
There's a lot of truth to this. When in doubt I'll fire up my WSPR beacon and actually test propagation for myself. PSKReporter can do the same. If you're a SWL only, this doesn't help you though.
Not sure what you expect listening in the middle of the day. Additionally, solar cycles are a marathon, not a sprint. People who started listening after the advent of the Internet have no patience, which is why so many leave the hobby. It takes time and patience. All I see on TH-cam is people grumbling about conditions- it really gets old.
Thumbs up. Yes, a tripod will make me happy. :)
I'm happy to be back! :)
Hi can you recommend a good external antenna for sw listening? Thanks
It depends on the conditions in your immediate area and what you want the antenna to achieve. If you are in a rural area and just trying to pick up broadcasters and the occasional ham radio operator, a simple length of wire thrown out of a window should give you good results. If you are trying to pick up serious broadcast and amateur dx, utilities, and airplane coms, then you need a proper antenna like a dipole or longwire at a reasonable elevation. Urban areas are more tricky, but I have had good results with the Sony AN LP-1 here in Beijing, but even here, I still get decent results with a random wire thrown outside my window.
Thanks for you response , I do live in an urban city Sony AN LP-1 could be a bit pricey but I'd still consider it for its portability
OMG. I have been trying to contact you for over a year. I was afraid you were locked up. What happen to your hand?
Hi Tom! I broke my wrist by slipping while my cleaning lady was mopping the floor. I am doing really well. Working as a sports editor and broadcaster now, still in Beijing. Let me private message you so that we can find a way to get in touch!
Ok, trrs73@gmail.
Pleased you are back. Great video too.
Radio Enciclopedia 530 AM from Havana, Cuba.
Seriously planning to buy this Rig after seeing this video also i have subscribe to your channel. Happy Holidays!
The case on mine is perfectly fine and the whip works better if you earth ground it or attach a counterpoise, the longer the better.
nice 15180 isnt targeted to europe normally
The mfj1020c i received a few days ago, does a reasonably well job of bringing in weak signals when SW conditions are right .. when i installed the battery however (how convenient removing the upper case to install/replace battery) the LED power light would sometimes be on/sometimes blink off .. upon inspection, the positive wire was loose on the power connection & had to be actually soldered onto the connection ( not a big deal, but for $100 i'd expect some MFJ quality control) .. who's doing the construction of these units .. Rocky & Bullwinkle?
im from Philippines its really is a station from here .they talk tagalog .our native language. cool .thats my dream radio .. it is sangean flagship model.
pyongyang is 7K miles from rome GA
Pls can you suggest me an easy good log software?
Surprised you not hear the firedrake or jammers from North Korea
are you the one who does News plus radio??
bro how to convert Khz into Meters???
hi, if I wanted to listen to dprk, or Chinese English radio from Vancouver, would I need a big expensive piece? I've only done a little research but would like to listen to the Voice of Korea, but living so far away, I don't know what kind of piece I would need.
Blame Speedway they are spreading they radio basically to whole world. you Can use old soviet radio, you should find this on eBay
Blake Speed you don't need an expensive one but it would be useful if your radio have an electronic display for the frequency
Interesting video - however, you need to compare the external random wire alone vs. external random wire through the 1020. Comparing it to the receiver's whip doesn't demonstrate if the 1020 does anything different to signal from the external wire in. Did you ever try that? What was the result?
How are those Chinese Jammers there as I hear they jam signals.
You're close. The "toughest" kind of DX is longwave beacons, which is one of my favorites.
Thank you for those tips!
Congratulations and good luck
I'll be listening out for you on CRI. de KB2CWN
I am sorry to report that I just finished my two years at CRI. I am still located in Beijing, but have moved up the media ladder a bit to a new position elsewhere.

hamrad88 I miss his videos, hope all is well with him.
I was thinking just last week that I should try to contact him. I will try again today.
Thank you I too follow Tom and have subscribed to your channel also.
Thanks so much! I plan to be uploading more, and better quality, videos once I can get moved into my new place and get a new shack set up! :)
First of all, a directional antenna will be definitely very helpful for MW DXing. Constructing a loop antenna is neither particularly difficult nor expensive. Except the required tuning capacitor, all parts should be available at DIY stores for less than $20. A flag antenna would be an alternative to consider as it is unidirectional, but it needs more space than a loop. Instructions on how to build those antennas are available on the web. For frequency information, have a close look on mwlist.org. Concerning identifying stations, listening around of the top of the hour is recommendable as most stations give their call letters or IDs on the hour. Many Latin American stations tend to actually identify shortly before the top of the hour, so listening out for them as of XX:55 has proved to be helpful. 73!
What's your location? I think WWRL had a Spanish format in 2014 (they changed to an Indian format some time ago). WUNR would be another station possible.
