Water Glassing Eggs & How I store Root Crops for up to a Year @ My Remote Alaska Cabin

  • While my son was visiting me, I took the time to buy enough groceries to last me until April. Now I need to preserve them. I demonstrate how to store root crops, such as potatoes and carrots, how to store apples long term without canning or freezing, and how to store mushrooms without dehydrating, as well as how to store eggs for months on the shelf. I also have an update to my recent caribou hunt. Did I get one? You'll have to watch to find out. Want to support the channel? CLICK HERE & read below to see all the ways you can donate.

      @@AloneinRemoteAlaska, I went out and got containers and natural play sand. It was like $7 a bag. The white sand was $16. I assumed it was bleached and for esthetics only so I opted for natural. I don’t have a garden… yet. I do, however, have a membership to restaurant Depot and will try to store the carrots, onions, potatoes and I’m going to try celery. Not sure how well they’ll do since they’ve been washed, but I won’t know until I try. I just bought 4 cases of apples from there and I’ve been making applesauce non-stop that I’ve been water-canning. I also found chayote there, which is my favorite vegetable. Ever. It’s used in a lot of Hispanic cooking, and although I love that cuisine, my husband does not. So, I stir-fry with onions, garlic and ginger and it’s so good. Usually, I blanch and freeze, but now I’m thinking I might try storing them in sand, too. 🤔

      I have a good feeling about the next caribou hunt in a couple weeks! But if not, I still have to pick up my 1/2 cow in a month! 🤭 Having my son here was amazing! So many projects got done and I am excited to show it to you. Next video promise! My "neighbors" I met in a very short amount of time. I went from not knowing anyone to meeting them both in about a two week span. The fire chief is a very nice guy and just darts around the town helping EVERYONE in whatever they need. The ex military family offered me salmon and would have given me many eggs if they hadn't just just sent all their chickens to "freezer camp". If I get 1-2 caribou, I will keep what I can and share with both, the guy who fixed my oil burner and my contractor. He prefers caribou over moose so I would like to get one for him. I mean look at how he saved my cabin! It's the least I could do! Thank you so much! 🧡🤗💚

      My first time trying water glassing eggs in Alaska! I practiced it in Colorado and they all turned out pretty good! My method is more to get me through the winter but glassing can store for 2 years if put in sealed jars! The moist sand definitely works well to as I had nice crispy carrots last winter. And yes! Sewing! As soon as I get my sewing machine area all set up, I can start making some curtains and skirts again! And talking to all the commenters on my channel makes my winters feel like I have many conversations with people and help me get through the winters! Always here to keep you company! Power outages in the winter gives an opportunity to clean the freezers because everything from the freezer goes outside and gets covered with snow. @AloneinRemoteAlaska  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The glassing eggs can actually be stored for 2 years if in a sealed container! Isn't that crazy! My method is good for 6-12 months maybe. My freezers all have these stackable ice packs that I got from Sportmans Warehouse. They have something inside them (not water) that freezes quicker and last longer. I normally use it for my big cooler that is my "refrigerator" but having them in the freezers along with bottles of water will prolong the temps for sure! Thank you so much Cindy!

    GURL!! Water. Glassing. Eggs.?? That is next LEVEL!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 I've known about this preservation method for years, but couldn't seem to get the technique under my belt. That was hands down, THE BEST tutorial on waterglassing I've ever seen 👏 🙌 😍 👌 . Also, I didn't know about processing mushrooms like that for freezing!! So you taught me something that will really come in handy!! Fantastic video- I see the community seems to like the longer videos, I do too! But either way, keep em coming! I have water glassed eggs when I was in Colorado and it really works! If they are glassed in a sealed jar/container and kept in a cool dark place, they can last up to 2 years! Who figured this stuff out!!??🤔 The mushrooms was one of those times I had just saved some extra sautéed mushrooms in the freezer and have been doing it that way ever since. But I do still dehydrate some as well. I taught Leigh something?? I fainted! I use your channel as a reference starting point if I am trying to figure out how to do something here "pioneer style". I always try to make longer videos but you know how it is. It's not just filming over and over (Take 47!!) but editing, uploading etc. I hope this winter will allow me to make some longer content though. Thank you so much Leigh!

So we teach and lift up each other!! And yes I understand completely about videos. My dang editing program gets all janky and "sticky" if I go past a 15-16 minute video. I really need to skill up in all that technology, but I just have no interest at the moment....the Shorts are like a game changer!!! Love em!! Idk if you know this or not but you can actually grow your potatoes in a few big sized tires and as they grow up out the top of them just keep laying another tire ontop of it and put more dirt into the tire and repeat it until you can barely reach the top of the tires and when it starts getting cold outside they'll not freeze from the temperatures cause of being in the dirt itself too and when you want to eat a few of them just dig them out and eat them but make sure that you recover the other ones back up below the freeze level in the ground too and if you do that they'll keep all winter long as well too this the way the ol timers done it around where I live at too

      It’s much better to use BPA free plastic containers like an ace container or a long Pep Boys container. Tires will leak dangerous chemicals into the soil and the plants that’s really not a good way to do it.

      I think you are talking about potato towers? Make them with tires or chicken wire and hay. I definitely plan on growing a ton of potatoes and will have the space to do it. However that may be a great idea until I get my garden up and running. I still have to protect the towers from the moose or bears or they will just get free potatoes! I will have to research about how they hold up to the freezing temps we get here though. Sometimes -60F. There are some old tires here but probably only about 4-5. Thank you so much James!

    Wonderful video! I just found out a few weeks ago about dehydrated mushrooms. I have jars and jars of them and rehydrate with water. A national park ranger told me to use white wine instead of water to rehydrate them. I have not tried that yet but wow, I bet that will kick them up a notch.

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      White wine sounds like a great idea!! I am going to try that for sure! I still dehydrate mushrooms but not as much. I'd like to someday get a freeze drier but they are kind of expensive and use a lot of energy so probably will never get one. I like figuring the preserving of food the "old ways". As long as they are safe. 1/8 of a jar of Nutella already gone! I couldn't help myself! Kenai loved the treats too! Thank you so much Brenda! (and hubby)

    Your knowledge of survival and preparation is quite impressive. I learned a couple things. I've hunted caribou in Alaska. It's a gamble as they can move many miles in a day. I'm glad you got out and gave it a go. Wounding an animal and not recovering it is every hunter's nightmare. It's only happened to me once, thankfully. I love beets and keep canned beets on hand at all times. Not as tasty or as nutritious as the way you do it though.

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska

      I love to hear when people learn something from my videos! Even if its not what to do! I am hoping to get 2 caribou when the season opens again in 2-3 weeks. I can use some for my freezers and canning and I would love to share the rest with the fire chief (unless he gets one), the ex military family "neighbor" and some for my contractor and Aaron. My contractor prefers caribou over moose. We tracked that poor moose all day! Plenty of blood trails to follow but he was a tough one for sure. Beets stored in damp sand and they taste like you just picked them many months later! But canned beets are pretty good too! I do love beets! Thank you so much Steve!

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I was in Colorado, to practice "stocking up" I would shop for 2-3 months at a time and some months I would just see if I could make it with whatever I had left in the pantry or freezers. But I do get a bit of anxiety when I have to go to the cities or towns to get supplies. SO MANY people! Amazon makes it easy for me to get some of those specialty items you cant really get on shelf here. Caribou season opens up again soon and my bags are packed and ready to go! I will definitely be doing salmon fishing next year. I just had my first full year as a resident so my resident and sustenance hunting and fishing license will be way cheaper! Plus if we can find a route to the Copper river behind my cabin (about 2 miles), it will be a very nice place to fish that no one else can get to unless they float the river. And I still would like to get my trout fishing in! I actually prefer trout but that may just be the Colorado girl in me still! Thank you so much Patricia!

    Hello. You are living the dream here in Alaska. We hope to move out and away from most people in town one day. I am impressed with your method of preservation for your produce. I do want to share that an apple in with the potatoes will stop them from growing eyes. Also, if you put a towel in, it can absorb any moisture which will help with making them last longer. I am near Houston but would be happy to help you out if ever you need anything. Have a wonderful winter.

      I have only driven through Houston Alaska and that was during a downpour when my son was here. Seems like a nice little town though. I have not heard about the apples/potatoes trick! Very interesting! I will research that for sure! And the towel makes sense! Time to hit the thrift stores again! Do you know what area you plan to move to or is it more wherever you find that perfect place? At least being in Alaska helps when you are looking for a place. Thank you for the offer! For this year, I am good! Just 6 cords of wood that need to be stacked but I will get that done ….. someday! :-) But please always feel free to give me tips and tricks or even let me know if I did something wrong. ALL advise is greatly appreciated! Thank you so much Tanya! :-)
