I moved back to Alaska about 1 1/2 years ago, bought undeveloped land, cleared it put in a pad and a couple of 40' connexes, one for storage, and one to live in, set it up with R30 foam insulation without any studs, just covering the floor walls and ceiling with painted plywood. this cost me some 13" inches off my internal dimensions, so my high box ended up at about 92" tall inside and the width at 77". Artic entry with a rubber mat covered floor that slopes to the front door 2" drop in 8', still R30 on the walls and ceiling. Li ion battery bank in the living area and 13.6 KW output of solar panels on 20' tall sun tracking mounts on a old south facing riverbank overlooking a 18' down slough. Most of my heating comes from the charging and discharging of the batteries. Near the winter solstice, I still get some shading from some really tall beetle killed spruce in the slough, and until I clear them out, I will need to suplement my heat through the 5 week period around the winter solstice, (a couple of 20# propane tanks and a indoor safe mr buddy heater handled that this winter). Total expendature perhaps $75 for propane heat and gasoline generator usage over the winter. I am in the process of putting in a foundation for a large log cabin, 40' by 60' with basement completly underground. Current age 68.
I'm a carpenter and used to run a business. The older guys like me, used to pack a lunch and eat on the job while the younger guys went out a bought lunch every day. Eating out every day is very expensive. Wawa in the morning, coffee and a breakfast sandwich, and then lunch with a hoagie or cheeses steak or even a couple slices of pizza can ad up to around $16 - $20 Bucks a day. X that by 20 workdays in the month and you have $320 to $400 a month! Now X that by 12 and you got $3,840 to $4800 a year!!! It adds up very quickly. So, pack a lunch and bring a thermos of coffee and see how much you'll save!!
Very true. You hit on the reason why a lot of people struggle to make it. My wife and I are in our 70's and comfortable while a lot of people who made way more money than we did are still having to work.
EXACTLY!!! I've been telling the younger crowd that always complains they are struggling this, and they refuse to do it, but it's how I was able to retire before 50.
Exactly! I’ve said this for years and years and years to younger people! I took my lunch 98% of the time and saved a lot of money. ( lots of leftovers, or a sandwich and fruit. ) 🍎 🍏
I don’t smoke, don’t drink, don’t need to eat out, as I enjoy my own cooking…..looking at the cost savings over 50 years, was a oh my gosh moment…….live the simple life and you will be amazed how more you appreciate life and yourself.
You remind me so much of myself when I was younger! At 82, I still live alone, very independant and self sufficient! I still put up food in Mason jars and heat my house with wood! I raised my 3 kids alone, built my house at 34 years old and still enjoying my life traveling and camping on occasion. Keep up the good life GIRL! You are an inspiration !
My dream was to sell my house in town and move to acreage in rural a country area. Finally at age 61 l did just that. I am 70 now and still love it. I have a little acre pond full of fish. Lots of wildlife. I mow, garden, can veggies and taught myself many things. Alone so happy for you. Rock on friend. We are living my dream.
I only buy three things: Something that MAKES me money (tools, investments), Something that SAVES me money (allowing me to do a project myself, or save me time), and Something that FEEDS me; mentally (books, education), emotionally (family time), or physically (food). Thanks for sharing -Dusty
I also crafted my dream of self reliance in the middle of a city. turned my whole lot into a garden.. learned how to preserve that food.. how to live large and free yet frugal and minimalist. Thank you alone for the very informative and fun video. Additionally, I appreciate the shout out and I am honored that you’ve enjoyed some of my videos.
Hi, I so enjoyed this video. I’m 66 now and I remember the first time I was bit by the off grid lifestyle. It was 1969 when my uncle invited me to go to their cabin. No power, no generator just a hand pump on the porch and a old ice box. Since then I learnt as much as I could to be able to live this way. I’m Excited now that we just bought 70 acres in more of a remote than we live now. We can’t see any others houses, just the river and wildlife. It’s a beautiful thing and I can’t wait to get moved there later this year. Thank you for sharing your story 🇨🇦🌷
I give you a lot of credit, you thought out a plan and a dream and you completed your journey by making many sacrifices. Another great video, keep it up. I was Lucky to visit my son in Alaska this past summer and I loved its vast beauty. I can’t wait to visit again this summer. Enjoy the upcoming warmer weather.
Dreams don't magically come true, we have to make them happen and that can take A LOT of work before you reap the rewards. You've worked and made your dream come true and are such an inspiration Alone. You deserve the very best life in Alaska. Love your channel and hi from Australia. I've cruised and visited Alaska, the most magical and beautiful place on earth and it definitely calls you there.❤
The way I giggled when you said Yeah I was talking and doing a lot of dreaming. 😂 Now look at you.. living your dream. I hope everyone else gets to live their dreams too. Good luck to everyone… ❣️
Most women never get their dreams to come true and the only reason I believe that you got yours to come true is because you is obsessed with it you had it in your heart and you lived and breathed it that is the reason why you did what you did for a single woman doing it on her own you don't have no idea how happy it is to know that a woman did this and got her dream❤
Thank-you for your beautiful videos I 68 years old have only been out of New England ,twice, down to Virginia by car. I get to see something breathtaking
This is the best video I've seen about how you accomplished your dream. I've made many dreams come true for myself, and your video is so encouraging. It is a matter of taking the steps toward that goal, as you said. I will be subscribing to your channel as I am very interested in survival, basic life skills, camping, etc. It's great that you were able to get all the skills you needed to make your move happen! Good luck!
All such great practical advice. My husband does not enjoy going out to eat so we have always saved money from not going out. I think that was one of the biggest adjustments during the pandemic for people, the inability to eat out but then many restaurants started outdoor dining. I’m too frugal to buy tea/lattes/coffee from takeout establishments. You can bought a whole box or can of tea or coffee for what two takeout cups would cost you. It’s all in priorities. It is amazing how much money one can save when you get rid of all the fluff. Thanks for sharing your tips.
Hi Scott! Hope you're doing well! There are so many great channels out there, some of the bests are ones that have been around for a long time, like Joe and Zach survival, Boss, and Jay Legere. So many others too! Let's just say birds of a feather flock together. By the way, thank you for the book! I really appreciate it. And am glad you liked the video. 🤗💗🐺
I like a woman who carries a gun. Cute little animal's, i had a ferret and he was a great companion. Its the best life a person can live and die doing. Dick is a big inspiration for me as well, its why i moved to the Rockies, and I'm now looking for my own land in Alaska. I'm hoping i will be heading up there this time next year.
Amazing video! The wow factor kicked in for me. Many things I've done too to acquire my dreams. Cost cutting, planning, investing (actually the tool that allowed me to really grow, financially....My obsession now...and want others to learn..) and yes many of the same TH-cam creators were a weekly must. If you want something bad enough, you will find a way! Yes, sometimes it takes somebody to push you, to make it happen. Well you can rest easily now, as there is nobody calling "wolf", in fact I know you don't hear anything out there, except for many "eating crow"! Like they say: It's not easy, and if it was everyone would be doing it! Laughed so hard, when you were talking about the headlamp in your house. Don't take this wrong! You are hard core! Love it. I here now dub thee,, an honorary Sourdough!
Why thank you; I am glad that you approve. 😉 I agree with you, if you want something bad enough you will find a way to make it happen. I laughed when I wore the headlamp back in the big city too. And believe it or not, even with all the frequent power outages here, I don't think I have ever worn it once here, despite having them stashed all over the cabin in the event that they are ever needed. Can never be too prepared. And I take that as a seal of approval. And stamped by the one and only 1968AlaskanSourdough himself nonetheless! 🤗💗🐺
Good Morning Alone, So much wisdom, food for thought; and I bet this give more 'itch' to those ready to make the move. Thank you for sharing.. Love to you and Kenai
You don't know how nice it is to watch your video today. I'm sitting in the airport looking at a delay long enough to miss the next flight that is the last one for today. Thank you for making it better!
Hi Alone. This video reminds me of my obsession with retirement and living in a Tiny house or Van! Everyone thinks I’m nuts and some family members even roll their eyes and snicker when I speak of my dream. Last year I started cat camping and preparing for my retirement. I have started getting rid of “things” that I have collected over my adult life and when I make new purchases or consider new purchases, I ask myself if it will work in a van or Tiny house. I enjoy your videos so much because it shows me that I CAN make my dream a reality and I am well on my way already! Thanks for sharing your life with all of us. Take care!😊❤️
Hi Alone 👋🥰It’s good to see you. That is the best way to plan for your future dreams as well as utilizing the concept for your everyday life regardless where you live. I love your money saving ideas as well! I unplug anything I’m not using and that really saves money on the electric bill. My bill went down $40 a month! Every little thing counts that is for sure lol. Much love to you, take care and God Bless🙏🥰
Hi Bebbie! I hope you are doing well. Yes, putting my plan in to practice before it was the way of life, taught me a lot, and helped me get here. I think that is a bright idea! No pun intended... or was it. 😉 I should do that. Even though I have very few electronics, every penny saved is a penny earned. Hugs to you! Take care. 💗🤗🐺
Yep, it takes someone with an unusual and clear mindset to achieve that goal. Many people will say Nah! You just have to really want to do it! That keeps the rest of us encouraged and entertained. It’s why we pay so much to see a movie or a show, or like we used to - buy a book and dream about it that way… Thank you TH-cam for still being free of charge…
Congratulations. I left the 'rat race' several years ago and never looked back. The hard work was worth it all. Your videos bring back memories. They are great: entertaining, educational, instructional, enlightening & captivating. Maybe you can try lavender essential oil lightly diluted with isopropyl alcohol in an atomizer spray bottle to help reduce the mice problem...smells great, but the mice hate it. Let me know if you get the chance. Thanks. Terry. (Lake Saint Peter, Ontario, Canada.
Hi Alone, thanks for sharing your story of how you ended up living your dream. I'm like you. I've dreamed of Alaska and living there my whole life. Your story is a great inspiration and motivation to get busy and make my dream a reality as well. Stay safe and warm and I'll keep watching.
This video was AWESOME!! You did a great job and gave very wise tips and information. Alaska is so Beautiful, I don't have a desire to live there but the advise you shared I can truly apply it to my life in many ways. Thank you And May Godbless all your endeavors.
I'm so glad you get to live your dream. With such beautiful scenery. Love your content

Great Channel, I enjoy it. I lived in Alaska twice once with my parents at Eielson AFB, my dad was in the Air Force. I was again in Alaska in 74 thru 76 when I was in the Air Force at Elmendorf AFB. I love it up there. Ultimately I moved to Maine after my Air Force enlistment. Good job with your videos!
Thank you, Alone. Very nice video. I lived here when I was 6 years old during the 64 earthquake. I moved here with your help. I said the same thing if you can do I can do it. 😂 have a wonderful day, Alone. Wasilla Randy.
Hi there, Randy! Thank you. I am glad that you liked the video. I am still honored to know that I was such an influence in your decision to move back to Alaska. No better of place to be in my opinion. Hope you're doing well. 🤗💗🐺
i can bring a trailer full of supplies, couple snowmobiles, and a newer highly reliable 4x4. i just learned how to make sourdough bread, so will bring starter and flour. make a list, check it twice . . .
Thanks for sharing all of your experience! You inspire me to continue following my dream of being more self-sufficient and to get my cabin the way I want it. Getting my debts paid off is a high priority and how you did it is very helpful. Grissom says WOOF!
You're welcome, Beth. I hope that you do follow your dreams and that they turn out to be everything you always wanted and more. Not to sound corny, but speaking from experience, I am glad that I saw mine to fruition. 🤗💗🐺
Listening to you talk, its like your describing me. I love being away from society, and animals are my best friends, and quite stary nights are the best. Money is my most worry, but I'm determined to get there one way or another..
Outstanding! The most comprehensive, realistic, and doable how-to videos I have ever seen! I'm older, but my children are still young! And this will work toward any goal! Just fantastic!
Alone this video was fascinating i wondered how you knew how to do all the things you do thats amazing how much thought and work you put into making your dreams come true. I would love to hear tou talk more about this in depth so many never do rhe research tou have done to get yourself ready for living your dream. Alone, you are one if a kind that's for sure you could actually start another channel on here teaching people how you did it and learning people to be able to fish, hunt, can food, garden, work with tools i dont know if you could teach gun safety on here the way YT is about certain things but you could sure help people out on many things. Love your channel ❤
Very interesting to hear your process to arriving in Alaska. What a good idea to try to live the lifestyle prior to moving. Another idea to increase funds previously could have been to rent your house out on weekends etc. while overlanding?
Back in my younger years i almost took off for Alaska willy nilly. Didnt hav a plan but did hav a seismic job. i almost came up with a seismic company i was workin for repairing their cables which the exploration could only be done in winter when everthing was frozen.. They said i would hav to wear a gun n not be afraid to use it unless i was willing to be everybodys girlfriend. At the time i wasnt of the idea of a gun. But i guess i wouldve been taken care of in winter. Sometimes i wish i had done it. Regrets. Probably why i live in mountains now. Mini Alaska.
I follow a few of those channels. Boss of the swamp has been a long time channel as well as bushradical. Those two guys and myself are very similar. Great adventurous video you put out. Real, honest and true. Cheers from Ontario Canada
This is one of the best videos and that I will watch again because you are teaching us life lessons. Thank you for educating me on saving and cutting down on spending. 🤗💖
Congratulations to you my son lives in wasilla Alaska I went up there for my granddaughter's high School graduation I really fell in love with the place but don't know if I could survive the really cold Winters seeing that I'm 70 years old but I love the countryside and was able to go ocean fishing may your dreams always come true
To make dreams come true takes a lot of hard work and sacrifice and smart money management, things that most people are not willing to do. Thanks for sharing your story.
This is an encouraging video, thank you. I’ve put many things in place that you talked about. Including turning an empty bedroom into a “cabin” to “feel out” what size cabin I will really need. Your finance ideas got me to thinking of some other savings I can put in place. 🤔🤔🤔🦋🦋🦋
Great videos!! I'm behind the times, moving from Wisconsin and retiring in Wyoming. I've been in all 48 states, and saw Hawaii while flying to Australia, but I will be making a visit to Alaska. Thanks for the opportunity to see life off grid!! Once I conquer Wyoming I'll consider Alaska.😅😅 Just happy to support you and your cause.
It’s my first time watching your channel, and I loved your video. It was practical, informative, and to the point. I loved that there wasn’t a long prologue explaining why you were making the video; you just launched into your Alaska experience. Your financial advice about making one’s dreams come true is very sound, and you’re a great role model for that, although my personal dreams don’t include living in such a cold climate. I’ve made a couple of huge life changes, first moving from Michigan to the Netherlands and then moving to Florida. Warm climates suit me. I’ve been thinking of making yet another major change, now that I’m close to retirement. It all starts with dreaming and research, so don’t fault yourself for the time you spent on that. There’s a momentum that takes time to build.
It's funny how we do things that work for us, but others think we're crazy for it! I only buy groceries once a month. That being said, I only buy what is a good deal and on sale. Then I buy extra to put in the freezer or on the shelf. My neighbor is the same way so we do a lot of shopping together.
I loved your video and dreamed of moving to Alaska from the first time I went there. It was 2018 and as I rented a jeep In Anchorage and drove U.S.1 to Homer, I had recently retired as a sales rep at the ripe age of 81. Yes, you read it right. 32 years ago I moved to WNC mtns. Helped the contractor to build my cabin and thought this was where I would live out my life. Time and age have caught up and after two more trips to AK. I realize it’s too late for me to start over. However I am so thrilled you made the plunge so I’ll live vicariously thru your videos and a few others like you. Blessings you realized your dream.
I just bought my dream home in Fairbanks ak, it's sitting on 8.5 acres, most of my family called me crazy. I've been planning on moving to Ak for 8 years, for 8 years I was obsessed with watching the t.v. shows buying Alaska, and living Alaska, literally on my days off I would binge watch these two shows, once I decide to make this move,8 years ago I cut my spending, and started investing in things that are a hedge against inflation, 8 years later I'm able to retire and start living life the way God intended for us to live, and I'm only 49 years old. if you have a dream you have to pursuit it, and protect it at all cost
This is my dream! I am obsessed with Alaskan lifestyle. I am 29 and live in South GA, but I will move my family to Alaska as soon as we are able. My heart could burst thinking about Alaska.
We have to be good stewart's with our resources. Unfortunately we don't always teach our children this way of life. Being frugal is not going without. Most successful people have a long range plan. Peace Love Happiness 💖💖
I've dreamed of living in Alaska since I was 14 but I'm now having health problems so it doesn't look like I'm going to get an opportunity to get to see Alaska but my dream has always been to live in the bush trapping and hunting and fishing living in tune with nature
Love this channel and the way you present helpful information. I would love to visit, but I could never live there. You obviously did your 'homework'. Stay safe and keep the great videos coming.
Amazing! Thank you for sharing this video. Yes, you indeed have a million dollar views. I would like to experience four seasons my day. I have it on my bucket list to visit such a place like Alaska.
excellent video. I respect your determination. I've also been preoccupied with Alaska since the 70s. I remember watching films in school about it. I've been there several times and it is amazing.
I always wanted to life in a gipsy wagon just like my Irish geannoteerd...and here i am living my dream age 75 in Holland in my wagon...i totally understand...enjoy🎉❤❤

@dustybottomboysAk I like that saying & rational.
From one woman who also craves solitude to another, you’re an inspiration. This was your best video yet. Thank you for teaching us ❤️
I also crafted my dream of self reliance in the middle of a city.

all about living from a budget and looking after the pennies.. and the dollars look after themselves.
if I can do this on minimum wage from running a business from my home.. and learning how to manage my money..?
anyone with some self discipline can do it.
and I had to grow my self discipline like Alone did.
it wasn't innate.
I can't quite make the jump to content creation online as editing videos is almost beyond me..
but I am slowly learning to do that as well.
currently spending too much time watching other people's content.. lol
you don';t have to be rich or have a great job to live your dreams.
you just gotta do it the only way you can.
You are the poster child of Dave Ramsey 😊. You are spot on for how to do it right 👍👍
Thank you alone for the very informative and fun video. Additionally, I appreciate the shout out and I am honored that you’ve enjoyed some of my videos.

I very much enjoyed hearing more of your story!
Good Morning Alone, So much wisdom, food for thought; and I bet this give more 'itch' to those ready to make the move. Thank you for sharing.. Love to you and Kenai
Greetings...I as well lived out in the bush in my house..off grid in northern Yukon..miss it tremendously!!😊❤😊
Take care. 💗🤗🐺
Another great video and I really appreciate it when you talk about other channels that have motivated you to your lifestyle.
Thank you
Smart and wise advice, thank you Alone!
Thank you, @63Clocks. I really appreciate it. Hope you're doing well and enjoying spring. 😉💗🐺
Yep, it takes someone with an unusual and clear mindset to achieve that goal.
Many people will say Nah! You just have to really want to do it!
That keeps the rest of us encouraged and entertained. It’s why we pay so much to see a movie or a show, or like we used to - buy a book and dream about it that way…
Thank you TH-cam for still being free of charge…
Thank you for sharing your life in Alaska with us! You Rock!
I really admire your strength. You've followed your dreams and your strong and will figure things out. Good for you!@
Great video Alone. ❤. So nice to hear your life before Ak and how much it’s changed now. So happy for you that you made your dream come true! ❤
Thanks, Monica! I appreciate that. 🤗💗🐺
Thanks.

You did it!
I've done it but I always wind-up doing something else.
You're a very cool person.
Thank you for the great vids and stay cozy.
i can bring a trailer full of supplies, couple snowmobiles, and a newer highly reliable 4x4.
i just learned how to make sourdough bread, so will bring starter and flour.
make a list, check it twice . . .
Wow! Cool experience you have. Way to follow your dreams! Thank you for sharing your story.
But Colorado has some very beautiful areas too. They have bears, mountains, snow, fishing and etc. So why did you like Alaska better?
This was very interesting and so true. A lot to think about. Ty Alone.
Very interesting to hear your process to arriving in Alaska. What a good idea to try to live the lifestyle prior to moving. Another idea to increase funds previously could have been to rent your house out on weekends etc. while overlanding?
Wonderful video! Thank you for sharing 😊
Thank you so much for this video.
Glad you fulfilled your dream.
I learn so much from you.
Awesome scenery shots!
Enjoy your videos very much, can't wait until the next one!
You've built a wonderful life and thank you for sharing your journey, I found it very inspiring.
Ah Carrie Ann, you always tell me that. You're so sweet! Hugs! 🤗💗🐺
Great video. So glad you are living your dream and I know you have helped al lot of people with getting to their dream no matter what it might be.
Once I conquer Wyoming I'll consider Alaska.😅😅
Just happy to support you and your cause.
living the dream, just amazing! and love that photo of your kiddos so dang cute (i bet they were perfect angels with those smiles!)
Great video and very helpful to others👍👍👍
Thanks for sharing!
Hi Alone! TY for sharing your story with us, Alot of great info on how You made your dreams come true. Another great video, see you on the next one!
Hi Paula and Jason! Thanks for watching the video. I so appreciate you both! 🤗💗🐺
@@AloneinRemoteAlaska Your very welcome! Hope your still having spring weather. See you on the next one!
It's funny how we do things that work for us, but others think we're crazy for it! I only buy groceries once a month. That being said, I only buy what is a good deal and on sale. Then I buy extra to put in the freezer or on the shelf. My neighbor is the same way so we do a lot of shopping together.
I just have to say.....what an amazing woman!!!!!!
Thank you!!!
Blessings you realized your dream.
just a lovely heatwarming video ty
Excellent info! Thank you.!! I add sparkling water to cranberry or pineapple juice. Way better than soda any day. ❤
What an inspiration you are. Just found your channel and am loving it.
That view of the mountains is worth a million . have not watched yet. Guess the culprit wonted to hole up and have a million dollar view
Beautiful video and that's a very nice bunkhouse.
I just found you, I luv what your doing, I also have a dream like that. So happy for you.
We have to be good stewart's with our resources. Unfortunately we don't always teach our children this way of life. Being frugal is not going without. Most successful people have a long range plan. Peace Love Happiness 💖💖
Thank you for this video! Very good ideas into making this a reality ❤
Excellent video on the value of preparing before the fruition of the vision! 🎉
Good for you for going after the dream!
Omg this is my dream!!!! That huge table you made is absolutely GORGEOUS….. You are awesome. Keep going
Now we probably spend $50 a day on fast food!! 😢. Horrible!!
Ended up with 20 AC in MT.. Loving it!! Lot of work!! But it's good for the soul!!
Amazing! Thank you for sharing this video. Yes, you indeed have a million dollar views. I would like to experience four seasons my day. I have it on my bucket list to visit such a place like Alaska.
You followed your dream, and with TH-cam others can follow you! Great video.
excellent video. I respect your determination. I've also been preoccupied with Alaska since the 70s. I remember watching films in school about it. I've been there several times and it is amazing.
Loved your video, very informative and full of practical good sense! Way to aspire and achieve your hearts desire!👏
I always wanted to life in a gipsy wagon just like my Irish geannoteerd...and here i am living my dream age 75 in Holland in my wagon...i totally understand...enjoy🎉❤❤
