I just lost my Giant Roscoe and he was my first dog. Yes, just need to be firm and willing to train. Both you and the dog. Roscoe was 127# at 5 years old. He lived to 11. So, ya, a large breed but alot of fun.
I’m so sorry for your loss!! I have a miniature schnauzer named Roscoe. This is our family’s first Breed of schnauzer and we LOVE it. We normally always preferred Rottweilers.
Our boy, Baron, went to 139, and truly was all muscle, never soft or OVER weight, and actually looked trim and fit! He was from an excellent breeder; so, some excellent genetics were on his side for health and temperment. Still, he was defiinitely strong-willed. We were very, VERY careful to socialize and train (with whole-family-consistency) at a very early age, and throughout life. He was loved by the entire neighborhood! Lived 12 years. Died on his birthday. Thrived despite a few toe cancers, but ultimately succumbed to osteo sarcoma in his last 45 days. Went very fast. Miss him terribly. He was my stalwart pal!
My GS is trained. That said, she helped three burglars find the desire to go home immediately. I sent her, and right before she entered the vehicle window, I recalled her as they decided to leave. 😂

Jon. Interesting. I have a gigantic property so there is a lot of running room, etc, and was considering the breed. I believe all you said and have heard it before. I agree with almost everything you said about Giants. I've had three now, they are HIGHLY intelligent..They do get quite attached to the primary care giver. Don't worry if you already have a cat in your home, they think cat's are dumb. But be careful about strangers on your property if you don't socialize them. I love my giant, and he does shed a lot. I got him when he was 2. He is now 5 years old. Hes 88 lbs. Great watch, dog. I take him to doggie day care because I work. I would definitely get another one. Great dog.
We have a rehomed neutered male that’s about 22 months old. I’m cleaning his face about four times a day. I love him already! The reason we have him is because his former owners did not have sufficient time for him. This breed needs you and they are snuggle bugs and Velcro dogs. He his definitely NOT for a first time dog owner. They need a lot of attention, exercise and time.
Giant Schnauzers are pretty on-par with German Shepherds as far as strength goes. Ours was a protection dog that did quite a bit of cart-pulling. I was around 220lbs at that time(he's passed away, and I've lost weight), and he was content to pull that for as long as I ever asked him to. For context, he was about 105lbs at his heaviest point. I'be owned purebreds of 6 different breeds in my life. If I could start over from the beginning, I would have started and stuck with Giant Schnauzers, and never looked back. They are large but not unmanageably so, very trainable, can learn a lot of different jobs/sports, very loyal, standoffish with strangers... there are too many positive traits to list. A truly outstanding breed.
Mine is obsessed with swimming. I took him to a dog pool the other day. While we were waiting he could only here the splashes and started crying. Once trained, what a dream dog they can be ❤. I'm getting a poodle puppy in a couple weeks (just worked out with a friend) just for my boy to have a companion while I work. Soccer and walks are enough on some days but not enough every day. I will say I'm glad i didn't let all of this scare me as a first time dog owner but training is a must.
We have the opposite we have a poodle and would love a second dog. We're considering a gs for a second dog. Poodles are amazing dogs. I wasn't a big fan of the breed before but we have one and she's great the only downside I would say is that she's a picky eater except for that she's amazing ❤😊
@ninavandenabbeele9667 my 7 year old giant and 7 month old poodle are the best of friends. They play so so so well together!! My Giant does best with puppies about this age bc they'll actually play. Giants stay puppies for a long time.. or playful. They are the cutest puppies in world too. They just have to be trained or your life will be a train wreck, so worth it, though!
Every dog needs training and to know that the human is the pack leader, regardless of breed or size. I have worked with many dogs for years and some of the most aggressive ones were small or even breeds people don’t “expect” to be aggressive. At the end of the day dogs are still animals with teeth and can bite so humans are ALWAYS the ones responsible for the dog’s behavior. People need to get a dog that is right for their lifestyle and be educated not just getting a dog based on looks. And it is not fair to the dog when HUMANS are not educated on what they are getting themselves into and they need to be accountable for that. Any dog can be a great addition just like any dog can be a danger. One of the worst dog bites I got was from a Yorkie that had bit multiple people in a two week span. And one of the sweetest dogs I worked with was a Cane Corso that never even curled his lip. I love schnauzers. They are great dogs!
Well with the separation anxiety, it’ll be hard to manage. They could get destructive so will need to probably stay in a crate unless you have a big property and can let it run around outside. I’ve never had one but that’s my best guess on how to handle it. Getting them exercise before and after work can help a lot too. Wear them out.
Mine is protection trained and seemingly human level intelligent. I can ask her what she wants, then when she shows me, I can ask her where she wants it and she will show me that as well. She will sweep the property on command and loves to work. If you get one, give them plenty of work to do. They love it. Also get ready to never poop alone ever again. 😂
Thinking a Giant is human intelligent is a HUGE mistake! It just proves that your girl has tricked you into believing that because, believe me, she is a lot smarter than most humans😊
I've had my boy for 3 years now. Love him to death. I would certainly get another but I would never recommend the breed to anyone. Sounds odd doesn't it? Several joking comments about how often narrator says "strong". It can't be understated. He's 100lbs of lean muscle but the force multiplier is the 'strong' will as well. And his goofy awkwardness can't be understated. They don't know how strong they are and can be like a bull in a china shop. If you own a GS, you're not allowed to own nice things. 😄
100% agree. My 6 yr old male is 50kg and solid muscle. He’s always had raw food. I would not recommend one either unless you can totally devote your life to them. I love mine to bits but he’s not an ‘easy’ dog. Have spend countless hours especially when he was a pup socializing him and he is wonderful now and goes everywhere with me BUT he would be an absolute nightmare if he was badly behaved.
How are GS with small kids? Two scenarios I would appreciate providing more info: 1) kid being 2 years old and the GS being a puppy. What should I expect there? 2) kid being 5-6 years old and the the GS being a puppy. Again, what should I expect there? Are GS gentle with kids in general? Any specific things I should be aware of beforehand? Do they tolerate toddlers’ harsh touch/play? What about grooming? Can I do it myself? Frequency? Thank you.
My mini schnauzer dog don't like kids. Schnauzers don't like noise, shout....in my opinion this breed of dog is cute, nice and have a lot of energy 😅 they likes to be the center of attention, they are gentle but they have a character, and they don't tolerate harsh touch 😅 All the breed schnauzers have the same character but i think GS are calmer than mini schnauzers 😅. My dog is jelaous of attention 😅 I think if a small kids would piss him off the dog will go to hide 😅 sorry for my english 😅 this is not my language
We have a 6 month old giant schnauzer and a 6 month old german shepherd. Our giant is extremely friendly and playful but it is a VERY physical play to say the least. She learns new commands with 10-20 repetitions typically but keep sessions to 5-15 minute segments with play and praise between😂 the activity and mental stimulation required for giants is very high….i put in 6-11 miles on foot every day typically so I can’t imagine what our pups put in🤣 we have 17 and 11 year old girls and our 11 year old would have had a lot of trouble handling our giant 5 years ago…but if you do not leave a younger child unsupervised i would see no issue at all👍 natural property protection instincts started showing at 3.5-4 months old(but warms up to friends n family very quickly) we have been socializing in public since 3 months old and she does quite well with external stimulation. All in all i would recommend a giant schnauzer in a heartbeat as long as you have TONS of time to devote to the pup and a good sized yard😁👍
We got our GS when he was 9 weeks old, trained him ourselves. My brother (much younger than me:) was 18 months old, my sister was yet to come. Our Short has NEVER made any harm to either of them, not even unintentionally. He was extremely big and strong, even for this race, but equally delicate and careful with kids. Sometimes they happened to pull his ears (or tongue!) and stick fingers in his nose or eyes, as very little children can do. He just sighed and moved aside. I don't know any other GS living with toddlers, so I cannot guarantee its always the same. But ours was an example of goodness.
Have a 13 yo Mini that sounds like a giant. Got her a Toy Mini for company. Thinking about a Giant when the Mini passes but might need to go with another mini.
Giant schnauzers are a ton of work and require almost a 24/7 commitment. There are rescue organizations for this breed, because many people cannot handle them. Unlike a mini, a giant will totally change your lifestyle. They’re very loving dogs, but not for most people. I speak from experience I’ve had both types of schnauzers.
I just dog sat a standard version for a week. He was fairly untrained and not very socialized as a puppy. I was glad the whole time that he was 20-30lbs or he would of been a handful. I have had large dogs my entire life and just lost my golden a few years ago. All these dogs I was able to raise and train from 3 months, so they were easy to handle.. Inside the Schnauzer was a sweet and smart dog, it was just outside when he became erratic and hard to predict. Any other larger dog and or person that would approach us, it was all out crazy time.
I have a Giant Schnoodle and I promise they are the biggest babies in a dog breed, lol. She's VERY aggressive to people she doesn't properly know, so we have to physically introduce slowly. She definitely found her way out of her crate at the start but we fixed that real fast.
Also take in consideration: 1. Your Giant is smarter than you and 2. For a Giant if something happens once it’s coincidence, if it happens twice, it’s a new rule.😊
I had 2minis at once--we ran into a man with a ĹARGE GIANT my oh my !!! What a mix !!!!! The giant was more freaked 😳 at the end of the play date than mine 😂❤
they are a great family dog. Mine is great with both humans and dogs alike. She has a great eager to play with other dogs. At dog park she makes sure she gets petted by all humans. I some time wonder if she is a giant teddy bear as seems to be all lovy dowy. I, however, to my dislike, very timid. Any dog being aggressive or dominant , be it medium or large or giant, she gets scare and runs towards human protection with her tail between legs. But at the same time does everything to play with the dogs. It makes me wonder if she can be bold and protective when things go south for us. I believe this breed is a bit skittish.
She is very smart, learnt all commands quickly as if she already new them and learn more. She always wants to engage with human and loves fetching ball.
Socializing typically means getting them used to things outside of the home, not just in the home. And whatever you do, don't get 2 dogs at the same time unless they are bonded adults.
@@treasurewilliams13 it does vary but I would just recommend that you see the parents of the dog before you buy a puppy to make sure they aren’t too big for you and so you can see the dog overall.
Sake, you Americans are . Let's teach them to fight.. attack,, where as, over here in Scotland, we teach our dogs to stand fast, be calm , enjoy their life, with their leader, and family.

I wonder if this is a strong dog
Hmm. I also wonder if the ground is down and the sky is up.
Damn strong. Needs an even stronger handler!!!
They are incredibly powerful.
They would kill a bastard like you in a second!
Great video. They look really nice with floppy ears and long tails.
You have to get there tail docked.
@@julieseifert4680you don’t
I don't like cropped ears and bobbed tails
On any breed
Hey I might get a GS can they stay home alone for 8 hours while I work ?
No German shepherds need way more mental and physical stimulation than that it’s a working breed
I meant giant schnauzer
@@UnderDog748 are you dumb?
Well with the separation anxiety, it’ll be hard to manage. They could get destructive so will need to probably stay in a crate unless you have a big property and can let it run around outside. I’ve never had one but that’s my best guess on how to handle it. Getting them exercise before and after work can help a lot too. Wear them out.
If you're gone for 8hours a day, a dog is not for you period.
love these dogs!
They're basically a wooly Doberman pinscher.
My words! After two Dobies i am now on my second Giant 😊
@@Keyser_Soze739 Nice, they're great dogs.
How many times do you need to say it’s strong damn .. lol

bull in a china shop!
Thanks for the video~
You're welcome 😊
My dad is gonna get angry (he love’s giant schnauzers he beg’s to get one)
How are GS with small kids? Two scenarios I would appreciate providing more info:
1) kid being 2 years old and the GS being a puppy.
@@nibiru9035 thank you a lot.
@@domikm1767 thank you a lot for your feedback. Out of curiosity, how old are you with these younger siblings of yours??
This made me want one lol
I love giant schnauzers. It’s a breed I’d love to have one day. 🥰
Sounds more like you are talking me into getting one instead of a German Shepherd
😂
I had a tough time with my Rhodesian Ridgeback 😢 RIP Ginger 🐾🐾🐾🌈
Have a 13 yo Mini that sounds like a giant. Got her a Toy Mini for company. Thinking about a Giant when the Mini passes but might need to go with another mini.
Giant schnauzers are a ton of work and require almost a 24/7 commitment. There are rescue organizations for this breed, because many people cannot handle them. Unlike a mini, a giant will totally change your lifestyle. They’re very loving dogs, but not for most people. I speak from experience I’ve had both types of schnauzers.
I just loooooove my Giant Schnauzer NORI ..
I used to have a giant scnauzer , bear 🐻 so much money on food lol. He was so strong willed but such a teddy bear.
Cuties 🐾
For socializing would it be good to get another dog with him/her in the family? Also would it have to be a specific breed?
Socializing typically means getting them used to things outside of the home, not just in the home. And whatever you do, don't get 2 dogs at the same time unless they are bonded adults.
I had 2 Giants best thing I ever done
My veterinarian said to not feed raw meat to my dog.
I own a female one wouldn’t change her for the world x

7 reasons NOT TO WATCH THIS VEDEO….
Lol
Isn’t the max height 27.5 in and weight 85lbs? 💀
110 lbs actually but I’m not sure about the height. I have seen some online get up to 130 but that’s abnormal.
@@farriermaiden7289 oh cause on the akc website it says the most is 85lbs
I’ve wanted to own one for a while now, just want to make sure of how big they can get
@@treasurewilliams13 it does vary but I would just recommend that you see the parents of the dog before you buy a puppy to make sure they aren’t too big for you and so you can see the dog overall.
@@treasurewilliams13 mine is 70 lbs at 8 months
So if you don't want to have a dog that is lots of dog don't get this dog 😂
The Giant Schnauzer is the best dog in the world.
Giant schnauzers are quite hard to train, but once they are trained they remember everything they were taught.
No they are not
@@tomfisher47 they're harder to train than other breeds
@@ob1qtx421ha! Try beagles!
For sure those are not reasons to have a dog..
I agree fully! It are just things to know.
Mines attacked a pitbull
Sake, you Americans are . Let's teach them to fight.. attack,, where as, over here in Scotland, we teach our dogs to stand fast, be calm , enjoy their life, with their leader, and family.
You saw something somewhere once and decided to let it shape your opinion of an entire country?
Just the opposite pal, we hate dog fighting, only lowlifes do shit like that.
I have had all my vets tell me to never feed a dog raw meat. I will listen to my vet, not an add that pays for misinformation.
