    We have a Giant, 3 years old now. Magnificent loyal, loving dog BUT he is very territorial and needs loads of attention and exercise. He does not take to people coming near the house.Once we show him visitors are ok he's alright but don't be fooled into thinking Giants are easy. They are not. Spent hundreds of hours socialising him since he was a pup. Outside on walks he is fantastic with other dogs and children etc but at home he's a fabulous guard dog. Very very strong athletic dog. Make sure you do,lots of reading up before you even think about a Giant as a family pet. I reckon we spend about £400 a month on food, insurance, groomers. He has raw food BTW.

      Yes! Our boy loves people, but I am certain that he would become all teeth and toenails if womeone meant us physical harm. I don't know what we would do if we lived in a small space, but he has 100+ acres to run and roam on and four kids (and other dogs) to wear him out! If one is not willing to spend LOADS of time with their giant, I would recommend reconsidering ownership!

      J Bo, couldn’t have said it better. I researched this breed a long time before we got one. Ours is also very territorial and does not like anyone she doesn’t know around our home. We got her for her guarding skills and haven’t been disappointed. Out in public she’s nonaggressive but doesn’t like strangers touching her. Most people are good about asking first before petting, I can usually tell who can get by with a pet! We have a small farm so she gets plenty of exercise. Good breed but requires special attention. Not for everyone.

    Maggie Mae is our 4th Giant, we love this breed, however, we are now elderly and this breed of dog is very, very strong so caution should be used as they are quite capable of pulling you down! They are so loving and gentle but an excellent watch dog and can be very intimidating as they are large and black mostly which people can find scary. They are excellent with our grandchildren and great grandchildren but superb watch dogs. They are Velcro dogs in that they want to spend their time with you! Very clean, no odor and don’t shed but they need grooming about three times a year!

    I like the steely quiet way they check people out. Made the mistake of reaching out to pet one sitting in the back of a pickup as I was having a friendly chat with his owner. He took my forearm in his mouth to restrain me! Firm but never bit down... they are very cool

    I would like to add that while cropping is normally done for cosmetic reasons (as far as most owners are concerned atleast), these dogs are more prone to breaking their tails and getting ear infections especially in humid climates, cropping helps with airflow to prevent this.

    To anyone considering a GS, please pay heed to what you see in the video - a working environment with space and activity to engage the dog every day, and an owner who trains and maintains boundaries. If you have doubts you can provide these, please consider a different breed and class of dog.

    Training a Giant is paramount. Its important for people to understand that they are NOT related to the MINI. They are amazing protectors and that includes protecting you from your friends and family if they feel they are not your favorite people. :) This info is really smart. Love that you tell the truth about them being hypoallergenic - NOT ;) and grooming! OMG did you know that Giants are second only to POODLES for grooming maintenance? It's not a breed for everyone, that's for sure. It looks like you have done the work on your dog. Well done you! But by the way...they don't stop growing for about 4 years. uh oh! The reason is because the bond that you and your family share with your schnauzer, will be like no other dog you will have. They are just special. I remember as a boy walking my dog lucky through the neighborhood and he just knew to stick with his little master to make sure I was safe. Schnauzers, regardless of size, kick ass. You’ve got the one that can USE strength with a brain and a personality! I’ve only had 2 miniatures but I’ve met standards and have driven by 2 beautiful Giants on my way to school for 8 years. My first Mini, Who’s name was Lucky, was on the bigger size (20-23 pounds, deceptively strong, with a leash, could pull an adult on their ass or at least make them stumble if caught off guard, though by appearance alone, that boy was sculpted). He thought he was Toby’s size (he was not intimidated by other dogs, which was both impressive yet worrying, because every big dog he saw he’d try to boss them). We lost him as of Frebruary 5, 2018😢😭. We now have another mini who’s name is Sargent Pepper (my parents named him), and we got him on November 2nd of the same year. He’s little more than half of Lucky’s size (was 11, now 13 pounds) and may not grow much more. He’s FAR more easy going than Lucky was, let me tell you. He’s friendlier to. Pepper likes animals and people, so we can take him more places than Lucky (though Lucky liked car rides and going on very long walks (like 1-2 hours if possible) MUCH MORE than Pepper does). I miss my Lucky dog dearly, but I adore my little Pepper! Both are loud dogs, even though Pepper is quieter and we actually thought when we got him that he was mute, because he didn’t make a single peep when we took him home.🤗😆🥰

    🤔 the giant Schnauzer where bred up from the standard schnauzer. The standard schnauzer was bred with/ crossed to the Doberman Pincher, the black Great Dane and the black standard Poodle. The Black Russian Terrier comes from the Giant Schnauzer not the other way around.
    They where originally bred as cattle drovers and as protection for the farmers.

      @@CopperheadRoadHomestead yes they are very good dogs. They will act instinctively but I would still invest in some obedience training at a minimum. They tend to pick one person to attach to but will tolerate the rest of the family taking on more of a guardian roll over any children in the family. They make excellent homestead/farm dogs.one thing for sure is they are very strong willed and independent minded.

    I grew up with one on a family ranch, he was smaller than our German Shepherds but he would take anything and anyone on at anytime, I also have worked with one in Search and Rescue, good dogs. One issue is they vary a lot in size, if you get a puppy you may end up with one not that big at all (despite being a "giant")or over a 100 pounds, you just never know.

    I see people coming here from different places. I searched giant Schnauzer on YT because we had a long time ago a mixed female GSD with Giant Schnauzer, and it was a nice dog. She looked more like a GSD, but with a bit more fur. Though, the best dog we ever had was one of her puppies, which was also mixed with another middle sized dog we had, which didn't really belong to any breed. Her puppie growed up to be a very smart and obedient dog, with a great personality and a very, very good relationship with everyone in the family. All this happened in eastern Europe, before my country entered EU, nd it was a bit more freedom back then, so the dog could also wonder by himself wherever he wanted. He knew how to open the gate from both sides, he was athletic and strong at the same time, but less stronger than the caucasian shepherd dogs in our vecinity, his eternal enemies. He was smart enough to know how to avoid fights that he couldn't win, but he never listned to us anymore when he wanted to go in a 1v1 fight. He usually won the dominance fight with other dogs the same size, but constantly lost against the bigger dogs, and he would always pretend to be dead after a few seconds in the fight, and s soon as the other dog turned around, he jumped on them again. Sometimes it was hilarious to watch him do that, although we never encouraged him to get into dog fights, but since all dogs walcked free back then, it was quite common. He would also pull the sledge whenever winter came, either with 2 to 3 of us on the sledge, with a little help for the start whenever it was more than 1, or uphill when we went to the nearby hills in the area. At first we tricked him into pulling us by making a specific sound people make there to make their dog attack some other animals, but he soon picked up on that and he knew it ment we want him to pull us, and did it gladly. Up and downhill that was not necesary, as he was running allong us downhill every time, and pulled the empty sledge back uphil very happy to be around us. Once he was lost in our village for about 2 weeks, and we thought we won't see him again, but my father found him hile coming back from work. From a young age he wasn't aggresive at all when someone would take something away from him, like his food, or something. His other brother, who was a bit more stockier, was also a bit more aggresive when coming to that. When we still had all of the puppies, my mother wanted to feed them, and while doing that he rushed to take something from her hand, and mistakenly bit her. My mother was asking him why he did that, and he took an apologetic stance, and didn't eat anything else for that meal. He was also shyer than all his brothers, and that's why in the end my father decided to keep him, from all 9 of them. He kept 2 at first, but he was the one to stay with us until the end. After we lost that dog we never had another one for a longer term. My mother didn't want a dog just for a pet after we entered EU and weren't allowed to grow our own livestock anymore, but she misses that dog too. We all loved him more than any other.
    Sorry for the long story, melancoly came while writing this.. :D Anyway, I lived in Vienna for the past 6 years, and it's difficult for me to have a dog right now. I love dogs in general, and I always wish of having one again, and I am doing research to see what type of dogs would suit me, for when I have the possibility again. I've heard giant Schnauzers don't have medical problems in general, which is a huge plus, but I don't know yet how is their personality overall. As a kid I didn't know much about dogs, but I grew up learning more and more about them, so I believe no race of dogs would be a problem, even though some could be a challenge. I want a medium to big dog, that is smart and trainable, and that could also serve as guard dog. I am also looking for a dog that enjoys exercise, but doesn't need extensive exercises eery day. I hope I can find more info about this type of dogs.

    We have about 47 acres in a rural area. Do you think a GS could be trained to not eat our ducks and meat rabbits? Do they have a high prey drive? Can they be protective over animals or just humans in the family? We love them and hope to get one soon. Also, do they tend to bark all night or just during the day when they are out and about? Thanks!!

    • @CopperheadRoadHomestead
      @CopperheadRoadHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We have ducks that both our GS’s leave alone and the female, who is with them much more often, is very protective of them! Our meat rabbits are in hutches, so they aren’t around them as often. I think they could be trained to not chase the rabbits, though. They have a pretty high prey drive naturally, but they never harm any of our livestock.
      They bark a lot when they hear things. Ours doesn’t bark much at night...he is in the house with us, but I think if he stayed outside, he would probably bark a lot at night.
      You’d probably have a happy schnauzer on your 47 rural acres. Ours are very happy on our 150 rural acres! This is the best dog I have ever had. I love him so much!
