No. Street Fighter II V wasn't very successful or popular in the United States. It aired for a brief time on Encore and Starz in the late 90s and early 2000s. But compared to other anime like DBZ, Yu Yu Hakasho and Cowboy Bebop, SF II V wasn't a well known series here in the US and it bombed in Japan. It's biggest success came from Brazil and maybe Europe in the late 90s and early 2000s
I mean it was about as well advertised and promoted as an OVA could hope for in the 90s. If you had any game magazine subscription there's a chance you would've heard about it.

This anime needed a bigger and better sequel series like how Dragon Ball has. • Titled *SUPER Street Fighter II V* • Ryu and I come back wearing the ruby and gold colored sparring-gloves seen in Alpha and mastering each other's moves where I now have the Hadou-ken. • The other street fighters also having ki-summoning moves like Guile's Sonic Boom, Chun Li's Kiko-ken, Sagat's Tiger Shot, etc. • The newcomers being E. Honda, Blanka, T. Hawk, Dee Jay and Akuma as a major villain. • The other major villain being a 2nd Bison who wears red, the plot twist reveals that was who the original Bison was talking to through the eagle-head, his own clone.
Love this retrospective!!! We were about the same age when we came across series. I remember reading about it in Animerica magazine in late 96 or early 97 and Manga video were releasing those joints on VHS with 3 episodes for $20 a pop🤦🏿♂️. I didn't actually finish the watching the series until years later finding the series used on DVD. This really does take me back to the high school years in the late 90's for real. Good job 🙏🏿🔥🔥🔥
me and my brother have watched this anime every year for almost every year since we were children and now im almost 30 and hes 34. Streetfighter 2 V will always be my streetfighter since my father had the VHS box set. and because its so hard to find i've archived it for historical purposes on both hard drive and cloud.. also this has got to be the most hyped intro of any anime ive seen. Now its time to watch it again BOYEEEEEE TIME TO BURN SOME MUSCLE
The lost Street fighter anime, Where Ryu is Jin Kazama, Fei Long is actually Maxi of Soul Calibur, Ken is Hwaorang of Tekken 4, Charlie is Peter Gutenberg, etc..... good times
You left out the best line from Guile during the fight with Ryu. "Haha, you youngsters run out of steam before you get started. Now me.. I could kick your ass all night"
I remember watching this as a kid. The episode where ryu learns the hado especially. Chun li shadow lady design in this was pretty dope and a nice callback to her original design.
this usually re-runs on the streaming network Toonami Aftermath if anyone is interested in watching it again. there's a few weird character tweaks in this anime, but its pretty dope. having Tom Wyner who also played Bison in the anime film is a genius casting.
It wasn't really outta no where. It was actually a pretty big deal. The show is actually distributed by STARZ in the US. And back in the day like half of Netflix's content was from a streaming deal they had for STARZ content. STARZ chose not to renew their deal so all their content was pulled. People though that it was going to be the end of Netlix at the time. It's pretty much the whole reason why Netflix was forced to begin creating their own content.
Thank you for taking the time to spread knowledge on this series. I skipped it as a kid cuz the miniscule design changes gave me a bad vibe. I'm glad I went with my gut.
There is only one fact from this video that I found to be incorrect which is that the first time us as an audience actually see him bison is when he's watching Ryu practice the hot dog and then he faints well Ryu faints and this is actually done well before the Ken and Vega fight
You're right about that one, good catch, its when Ryu decides to not go to the ball where Vega and Ken have the fight. Bison tells his driver pull over when he sees Ryu on the beach. In the following episode Bison sends Zanghief to kidnap Ryu on the beach. My mistake.
Omni Frame this took me back down memory lane when my friends & I devoured this show in HS / college. You and I lived through Street Fighter mania and its effects on the arcades and media at large and for all you young kids out there, it was a sight to behold. The days where kids and adults would crowd around a fighting game cabinet all over North America might be over, but those memories live on... This was a neat video for sure, so thank you for making this. It definitely needed a little trimming in the beginning and the OST sections, but so much was spot on. What I'm gonna say is controversial but I actually enjoy the first half of SF2V as the globe-trotting gang busting was fun. Man I hope younger kids check this show out. I love the Japanese opening and I actually find homoerotic Ryu & Ken fine...it's young karate guys being idiots and more movies need to embrace that like John Woo. :D
Yeahhhhh I actually struggled with what to trim and what to keep. Originally this was going to be longer, but I'm satisfied with it and I hope this video sparks interest in the series
Me and my buddy were obsessed with this anime. Use to go to the mall to see if the next tape was out yet. 3 episodes per vhs. Took a year for the series to come out
I used to watch this on Encore Wam, Street Fighter and Vandread every weekday, they would just loop the shows when they ended until they eventually swapped them out. I also call this version of the Hadouken the Street Fighter Kamehameha.
I liked this show a lot when I saw it when I was younger and didn't know anything the show was talking about. This video makes me want to go back to it. I don't like it when adaptations change character personalities, but this show feels like a rare good exception to that, since it talks about the kinds of things the games versions of Ryu and Dhalsim would talk about, so it's not TERRIBLY out of character for the series as a whole despite a few individual players getting done dirty.
oh thank god ! someone is talking about that Anime ! I love it so much ! and I don't forgot it, even I have some scenes in my channel ! especially when Ken escape the M.Bison prison ! and by the way : very good OST in that Anime ! ❤
long xing of the 12 animals of xing yi looks a lot like shoryuken. im just saying. wasnt ryus original win quote "you have to beat shen long if you wis to defeat me!" ? but just for bringing up santishi in a video, you get a like and a sub, my good sir. keep on doing gods work.
Yooo I love this series, you're absolutely correct about it being popular in Brazil, to this day people still remember SFIIV fondly around here as an all-time classic. To be honest, it was a bit of a shock when I browsed the internet and looked the series up on foreign websites/forums for the first time, only to find quite a handful of people shitting on it, calling it "that weird Street Fighter anime that was nothing like the game" and stuff like that, it had a completely different reputation. I actually think the first half is better than the second because it had the most character development and was truer to the core theme of the series about martial arts being more than a tool for violence, especially the episodes where Ken and Ryu become Dhalsim's pupils, the second half feels more like a typical good vs evil story, like "Ok, they grew up as people and martial artists, now let's put Shadaloo and Bison in this and make them the main villains because they're the villains from the game". Sure, it works and there are a lot of cool moments in the second half, but the first half is what made SFIIV special to me.
Two best things from this series. Ken is as strong and capable as Ryu. And the Hadouken Theme. That gat dang AMAZING theme song. Whole soundtrack really.
This was my first exposure to anything related to Street Fighter. My dad had the first few episodes on DVD and to this day its animation style has always been underrated and makes me wish Tekken had a series like this focusing on Kazuya's early days and im not talking about the 90s animated movie. Guile in this version is the best depiction of the character in any medium as well.
shouldve been obvious about Vega being a ninja, he jumps around and uses that claw and i think its mentioned somewhere in the media. maybe the old booklet?
You knew you was in for some heat when that 24 minute box showed up twice for 11:00 pm and 11:24 pm on Friday night on Encore. MAN THIS WAS THS SHIIIT.
It’s not forgotten by me. I own the DVD collection. Not quite as good as the animated movie ( the beginning episodes have pacing problems for the type of story they’re telling), but it certainly deserves more recognition than it gets. Even the live action movie and the American cartoon that aired on the USA network for two seasons are more well received, and they’re both awful representations of what street fighter is all about and why it’s popular.
For me, Street Fighter II V is "what if" Capcom try to keep the hype between production but end with unexpected bad reception. The funny thing is, Virtua Fighter animated series was aired 6 months after. The initial concpet design of Akira and Pai Chan also almost the same with Ryu and Chun Li (those spiky hairs and qipao) before they got changed. You can tell that Sega and TMS staff peeked some stuff from the show
Dude I absolutely ADORE this show, I was in late school years before going to Collage when this debut in Latin America on my country in DR and it was also super popular here, the theme opening song in both Spanish and Portuguese share the same lyrics translations and the song is just pure FIRE, I always had wanted SFII V costumes themes for an actual SF game (Capcom pleaseee put these costumes in SF6, I pay 100 US just for the Cammy and Chunli costumes if you do it). Seriously underrated this show was and in my opinion one of the best SF adaptations ever made.
I had this on box set DVD. I really enjoyed it overall. Some great scenes; e.g., when Guile beats up Ryu in the bar, when Ryu and Ken fight each other in the cave, when Ken fights Vega in the cage ("I'll finish you with one punch!"), and of course the end battle. The music really sells it, too. :)
I really love this show! in all of latín America is very well regarded, that opening hit the fells of a lot of ppl here(well the Spanish one but yeah in Brazil is huge too) thank you for the video! greetings from Guatemala.
How is it forgotten? It was highly influential. It changed Bison's permanent look henceforth, for one. It sorted out the name difference between Charlie and Nash by calling him Charlie Nash, who by the way was black and wore glasses and kicked a ton of ass. This anime was awesome
I got so excited seeing a RetroSpective on SF2V in my feed I had to hit this comment section first before I watched the video.😅 I just wanted to say I appreciate that light is being shed on this. This Series alone got me interested in Street fighter when I was in like 6th grade (I watched the whole thing on TH-cam back in ‘06) . I assumed it was popular because some of the rips were from when it aired on WB (iirc) back In the day. I’m like “why have I never heard of this!” This sent me down a rabbit hole of SF Lore and by the time I emerged… SF4 Came out 😂.
Peace Brother just want to point out thr HISTORY Channel had a show called HUMAN WEAPON which came out FIRST then DISCOVERY Channel came out with that show
Yeah I know lol I have own both shows. I watched them when they aired. I just didn't want to name both shows. Fight Quest rolled off the tongue better for me
Funny, that anime did aired on the Latin American version of Toonami here in Costa Rica, I remember watching it in the afternoons in the very early 2000s.
BRO!!!!! I only discovered the anime tv series because i was looking for the next time the live action movie was coming back on tv and there it was on the starz encore channel at 430am in 2004. I deadass got up at 430 am everyday just to watch it and maaaan after that ryu guile fight, i was hooked on the anime. Yea i didnt like that ryu or ken never used their iconic gloves or ryu had a whole new fighting stance which i wasnt a fan of but that didnt take away the show was awesome.
Forgotten in the USA, but here in Italy it is remembered fondly as one of the best adaptation of the game. Exspecially about the openings, remade by a local group, the Dhamm. th-cam.com/video/UeXdR26eIDo/w-d-xo.html
man i actually remember fight quest.(thanks for reminding me.:3) absolutely love this anime just as much as street fighter 2:the animated movie(kinda is like an au to the animated movie with similar elements & voice actors/fleshing out of it's story as i heard rumors of it being shelved sequel concepts.) as one of my favorites of capcom's anime/video game adaptations in general staying true to the source material also being it's own thing. loved the music that i fell in love with when i 1st got introduced by looking up more street fighter anime after being introduced to the animated movie/alpha ova's/darkstalkers ova's/power stone anime by capcom friendly club's vhs. the story of this being a world tour of ryu/ken being humbled(compared to naruto/sasuke who are actually way gay by how horribly written the female characters are and how badly kishimoto writes relationships in general compared to way better shonen jump series i didn't mind the more affectionate versions of them as it was funny/heartwarming,the animated movie even if more subtle had them and the u.s just had a stupidly pompous toxic reaction to gays in general.) by guile defeating them showing the characters off so well like chun li(like her relationship with ken,her father staying alive and being like a mix between sakura kasugano/mai shiranui who compared to chunners was a damsel in her anime appearances/even the game version of chun li hasn't had a good win in fights record in 4 definitely & 5 compared to both anime appearances.),zangief(like he's the live action movie version being funny though do feel bad he doesn't get to change sides like it just being knocked out by guile/likely crushed by the collapsing base at the end.),guile(will give him credit he actually held his own against m. bison way better than the animated where he just loses from endurance being unfocused by emotional rage before getting floored by one blast ryu got up from with not much injury twice/chun li never fought him she probably would've only been slightly successful and he made up for it being the best version of him even more than the games doing his best to save ryu/ken,standing ground after being knocked down by bison and held chun li back enough for ken to strike bison hard enough to free her.) dhalsim(what i wish they did with him in the animated movie after sensing ryu's energy training him alongside e. honda.),fei long(actually like this version alongside the animated movie the most compared to the game being "just bruce lee" that tbh marshall law in tekken till recent handled better/love he's like a precursor to batsu from rival schools.:3) ,sagat(like it foreshadowed his friendship with ryu in 4.),balrog(alongside the movie being him at his smartest even if he doesn't fight.),cammy(is odd we only see her game look on a photo as she looks more like anime nina williams but did like her change after her fight with fei long/had more screentime than the animated movie.) vega(like just like with the alpha ova he's evil and creepy but not affiliated with shadaloo outside a scrapped sequel concept.) & m. bison(like with the eagle idol it's the closest to an origin to the psycho power outside stealing ingrid's crest in alpha 3,being just as intimidating as the animated movie having the best voice for the dictator period, almost being like how i'd imagine gill if 3rd strike got an anime/fleshing out the animated movie's goal of wanting to destroy the worlds leaders with super soldiers to control them instead of wars and him having berserk moments of the idol controlling him at the cost of what little humanity he has/his base being implied to be a temple the eagle idol is a god to with how he buys the rainforest it's in,calls the control room it's in a shrine and parts of it resemble ancient ruins than a military base especially the area ken's kidnapped in/guile fights zangief.) love like the animated movie you feel the weight of strikes here(especially special attacks being "if you're lucky enough to survive a shoryuken your not getting up from the hadouken.),being comedically slice of life mixed with final fight (like dorai being a anime mike haggar/ashura being mad gear & could see poison/hugo in sagat's role in a new street fighter anime like in 3rd strike's manga ryu final.) to deeply philosophical in the teachings especially in ep 6(like the old master's a mix between gen and oro.)/dhalsim overall(loved his training way more here than any shonen jump series & actually remember a video about his teachings showing the authenticity of it in real life.:3) ,the difference in ryu & ken's attacks(like it references ryu's stronger hadouken/ken's shoryuken.) and the well done slow reveal of shadaloo being behind everything. really enjoy the fights in the series especially fei long, the cave of ancients(love it being an ancient temple that forms illusions testing you controlling your intent to kill from going insane conquering your desire from going destructive foreshadowing the difference between hadou & psycho power.) & the final battle(enjoyed both being my favorite final battles in anime and like how compared to the animated movie ryu and ken fight m. bison with their full potential in the center of the universe the origin of all the fighting styles in the series and even after still getting overwhelmed showing their control during the fight growing to where the tables turn with ryu using the moves of his friends for what bison did to them ending with him using the hadouken powered up by his intentions killing the dictator for good where in the movie ryu/ken overwhealmed m. bison after besting him being strong enough to withstand his psycho power he tries fighting on their level as a last resort in the animated movie only to lose not understanding their determined bond but could've changed the ending to ryu fighting sagat again as a bookend even if it's implied m. bison used up all his psycho power trying to escape/like the difference of bison being dead with a few remnants left in 2 v while the animated movie has bison appear but shadaloo is nuked to oblivion.) wish this series continued(would've liked to have seen e. honda with how i enjoyed him in the animated movie/easily could see him being a friend with ryu after he leaves for home at the end,dee jay and t. hawk after only showing up in the jp intro/how they'd handle blanka.)/had gotten a bigger appearance(would've loved to have seen it on toonami.) as it was an honest series about martial arts that i think is more true about it than any i've seen before or since(assassin's fist gets close imo.) & with how street fighter 6 brought back the animated movie's singer for it's final battle would absolutely love to see a new street fighter anime in it/street fighter 2:the animated movie's art style again with ryu,ken,chun-li & sakura kasugano on a world tour meeting the other street fighter characters throughout the series learning their styles and philosophy ideals.
I actually used to watch this on Japanese TV. It was paired with the 2nd season of Magic Knight Rayearth for the 7PM anime block on Monday nights. Have most of the series on US released Laserdisc, but pissed that they didn't have the original Japanese openings and endings. I do remember Fight Quest, but I preferred Human Weapon (which actually came out before FQ) which aired on the History Channel.
Forgotten? Oh no, nobody who watched this series has forgotten. It was arguably the best streetfighter show/anime/story out there, only surpassed by the actual SF2 animated movie. This show was absolutely amazing and leagues above anything else that came out.
I wouldn't say its forgotten. It still has its fans today. But I agree with your review. I used to watch this show on the Action Channel back in 2006. Though I'm aware this show is from the 90s. lol.
I honestly remember the Street Fighter 2V anime and how similar it was to the Street Fighter 2 animated movie. I honestly thought that Street Fighter 2V was great from start to finish. Side note: I actually like the USA Street Fighter cartoon and thought it was alright.
I still have this anime on DVD.. And technically ken and chun li wasn’t like a love interest.. vega made it seem that way. Ken just wanted to save a friend he cared about.. fei long was ok.. i like how cammy and fei long had a interest low key.. they did come into the game together. The ending was ok, i just didn’t like how they kept replaying the same scenes in the fight.. especially when they might’ve hit bison in the right hand and he reacts in pain with the same scene but in his left hand lol.. i enjoyed your retrospective, keep it up

Then why not just call the video "The underapprrciated Street Fighter Anime"?
Honestly just let them disagree if they do. I wouldn't bother responding to the comments like this, I'd either change the title quietly or let it go.
@8LiterallyJustTheNumber8 You right. Not changing the title though
I’m so happy you made this video. I been telling people for years about this anime. From the martial arts to the buddhist philosophy. This is such an underrated anime.
Am I wrong in saying that everyone uses that "underrated"-term lately. Why?
I love how Akuma was a Easter egg in this series, if you pay close attention you can see him as a extra in the background in some of the scenes
I loved the video, congratulations.

I had the entire series in a DVD box set. Definitely underrated.

Same and I agree

The music, particularly the Hadoken Theme, is epic.
Edit: I made this comment before you played it. 🤐
Classic. Remember the entire series on VHS when I was in Suncoast video. Great era in my life.

GREAT to see you fellas back! Thanks for this retrospective. I went to look if it was on TH-cam and sure enough, it was!
A lot of Street Fighter II V is missing from TH-cam with like 8 out of the 29 episodes available online
@omn8612 No, brotha. Trust me: the ENTIRE SERIES - all 29 episodes - are on here. Just search and check out the different playlists that come up.
I'm just mad at how long it took me to realize that was Binary Star playing in the background
And then you close with that same Bruce Lee quote‽ earned my sub!
This should be part of the Street Fighter lore. this is a great part of the Street Fighter history.
I loved Street Fighter II V.
This video essay unlocked a lot of memories. One of the greatest animes ever. I wish the series had more seasons.

However Ken's fiancé Eliza (who made an appearance in Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie) is written out of the story due to her lack of character development and no plot involvement, but she still can be seen as a cameo in one of Ken's official Street Fighter II V trading cards.
2. The Hadou-Shoryuken move can be used by Ryu in ULTIMATE Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
1. This is Fullmetal Alchemist star Vic Mignogna's first voice acting debut, he played the role of Vega in the English dub of this anime.
That’s was one of my favorite anime I watched it so much back in the day 💯
He really said "knock this kamikaze crap out!".
Lol 😆 🤣 😂
This anime needed a bigger and better sequel series like how Dragon Ball has.
• Titled *SUPER Street Fighter II V*
• Ryu and I come back wearing the ruby and gold colored sparring-gloves seen in Alpha and mastering each other's moves where I now have the Hadou-ken.
Ken vs Vega is so good.
Slightly injuring Bison is an understatement.
He never said a word after that punch lol
Love this retrospective!!! We were about the same age when we came across series. I remember reading about it in Animerica magazine in late 96 or early 97 and Manga video were releasing those joints on VHS with 3 episodes for $20 a pop🤦🏿♂️. I didn't actually finish the watching the series until years later finding the series used on DVD. This really does take me back to the high school years in the late 90's for real. Good job 🙏🏿🔥🔥🔥
🙏 Respect 🙏
me and my brother have watched this anime every year for almost every year since we were children and now im almost 30 and hes 34.
The lost Street fighter anime, Where Ryu is Jin Kazama, Fei Long is actually Maxi of Soul Calibur, Ken is Hwaorang of Tekken 4, Charlie is Peter Gutenberg, etc..... good times
This was a fantastic video essay 🙏
Very dope work as always bro 💥 🥊
Thank you so much. Means a lot
The fact you mentioned Fight Quest makes me a fan for life
this usually re-runs on the streaming network Toonami Aftermath if anyone is interested in watching it again. there's a few weird character tweaks in this anime, but its pretty dope. having Tom Wyner who also played Bison in the anime film is a genius casting.
I remember this was available to stream on Netflix & outta nowhere it was pulled from the service!!
Glad That you mencioned the show's popularity in Brazil. The dubed intro bring's a tear to my eye
Thank you for taking the time to spread knowledge on this series. I skipped it as a kid cuz the miniscule design changes gave me a bad vibe. I'm glad I went with my gut.
A1 bro appreciate the look back to one of the animes that I hold very close to the heart still got the box set at the crib 🌊🌊🌊
No problem. Subscribe for more great videos
Man, I love this series so much!! “Gonna Burn Some Muscle!” P.S the full 29 episodes is on YT to watch.
Ty so much
Yeahhhhh I actually struggled with what to trim and what to keep.
Thanks I appreciate you. You might also like my video essay on Drunken Master II it's on the main channel page
ONE OF MY FAVOURITE ANIME OF ALL TIME.
The intro mad fire 🔥 with that voice screaming street fighter classic
Ryu definitely got his azz whooped by Guile. Great job with the video.
Fight Quest and the Human Weapon were my shit🤣
This was my first exposure to anything related to Street Fighter. My dad had the first few episodes on DVD and to this day its animation style has always been underrated and makes me wish Tekken had a series like this focusing on Kazuya's early days and im not talking about the 90s animated movie.
Guile in this version is the best depiction of the character in any medium as well.
Saw this very late in life like 3 years ago very good show the voice acting the music the way it was drawn worth my time
Yo this show was DOPE. I remember renting the VHS tapes around 1998 and fell in love with this series
SHIN.. KU.. SSSHHHOOORYUKEN!!!!
shouldve been obvious about Vega being a ninja, he jumps around and uses that claw and i think its mentioned somewhere in the media. maybe the old booklet?
My all time favorite anime, Ive rewatched the final episode probably a hundred times
9:26 what is the name of that beat with those Street Fighter voice samples in them? Thanks.
Yeah that beat is crazy. It's titled Street Fighter hip hop instrumental. I'm surprised more ppl haven't commented on that
I remember this. "Gotta burn some muscle!"
I only saw like the first 3 or 5 or however many was on the first VHS I rented from Blockbuster.
This anime was as popular on Brazilian tv as Cadillacs and Dinosaurs in the arcades here.
Loved your summary of Street Fighter II V, would you be interested in talking further on the series on another platform?
The Boosie clip after asking about Fight Quest is 😅😅😅😅😅😅
You knew you was in for some heat when that 24 minute box showed up twice for 11:00 pm and 11:24 pm on Friday night on Encore. MAN THIS WAS THS SHIIIT.
Yoooo! I forgot all about Fight Quest. I'm gon look for that💪
I had these on VHS tapes as a child
Underrated masterpiece
I remember this watching with my big bro and downloaded on PC. Good times.
Yes!!!! This used to randomly come in the e3 gaming channel in the late 90s early 2000s.
Watched it on encore wam, sweet memories
I originally had the whole series on VHS !
Bison looks cool in the blue
Love this intro !!! My favorite
This series not forgotten I use to watch on the STARZ channel back then in the mid 00's.
It is not forgotten. It is just that Capcom knows that story is better than most story's they have told. It was awesome. I own the DVD.
That Ken vs Vega fight is one of my favorites
A big reason why i loved alpha on the saturn and especially alpha 2, bc this anime was doing it big time with the animation quality for a sf anime.
I still have my DVD box set of this series, an underrated gem for sure, I have a ton of the soundtracks from the series on my playlist too.
I appreciate it. You leaving the full I two of the IS cartoon. And the full fights 😊... And yes this series. Still is the best SF a imation Yet
I love this series. Especially the theme of hadou. Its so ethereal....its got so many remixes...its my official theme v for Hadou
Oh I have not forgotten it in fact I still have a copy of the series
I got so excited seeing a RetroSpective on SF2V in my feed I had to hit this comment section first before I watched the video.😅
I just wanted to say I appreciate that light is being shed on this. This Series alone got me interested in Street fighter when I was in like 6th grade (I watched the whole thing on TH-cam back in ‘06) .
I assumed it was popular because some of the rips were from when it aired on WB (iirc) back In the day. I’m like “why have I never heard of this!”
This sent me down a rabbit hole of SF Lore and by the time I emerged… SF4 Came out 😂.
I hope you enjoy this retrospective
Hell yeah! Great Work man! 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Who forgot about this? Lol I remember watching it very well! I remember buying the VHS tapes so I didn't forget.
I never forget this
Exspecially about the openings, remade by a local group, the Dhamm.
th-cam.com/video/UeXdR26eIDo/w-d-xo.html
it aired on the Sy-Fy Channel from 2006 to 2007 on mondays
man i actually remember fight quest.(thanks for reminding me.:3)
absolutely love this anime just as much as street fighter 2:the animated movie(kinda is like an au to the animated movie with similar elements & voice actors/fleshing out of it's story as i heard rumors of it being shelved sequel concepts.) as one of my favorites of capcom's anime/video game adaptations in general staying true to the source material also being it's own thing.
loved the music that i fell in love with when i 1st got introduced by looking up more street fighter anime after being introduced to the animated movie/alpha ova's/darkstalkers ova's/power stone anime by capcom friendly club's vhs.
the story of this being a world tour of ryu/ken being humbled(compared to naruto/sasuke who are actually way gay by how horribly written the female characters are and how badly kishimoto writes relationships in general compared to way better shonen jump series i didn't mind the more affectionate versions of them as it was funny/heartwarming,the animated movie even if more subtle had them and the u.s just had a stupidly pompous toxic reaction to gays in general.)
by guile defeating them showing the characters off so well like chun li(like her relationship with ken,her father staying alive and being like a mix between sakura kasugano/mai shiranui who compared to chunners was a damsel in her anime appearances/even the game version of chun li hasn't had a good win in fights record in 4 definitely & 5 compared to both anime appearances.),zangief(like he's the live action movie version being funny though do feel bad he doesn't get to change sides like it just being knocked out by guile/likely crushed by the collapsing base at the end.),guile(will give him credit he actually held his own against m. bison way better than the animated where he just loses from endurance being unfocused by emotional rage before getting floored by one blast ryu got up from with not much injury twice/chun li never fought him she probably would've only been slightly successful and he made up for it being the best version of him even more than the games doing his best to save ryu/ken,standing ground after being knocked down by bison and held chun li back enough for ken to strike bison hard enough to free her.)
dhalsim(what i wish they did with him in the animated movie after sensing ryu's energy training him alongside e. honda.),fei long(actually like this version alongside the animated movie the most compared to the game being "just bruce lee" that tbh marshall law in tekken till recent handled better/love he's like a precursor to batsu from rival schools.:3) ,sagat(like it foreshadowed his friendship with ryu in 4.),balrog(alongside the movie being him at his smartest even if he doesn't fight.),cammy(is odd we only see her game look on a photo as she looks more like anime nina williams but did like her change after her fight with fei long/had more screentime than the animated movie.) vega(like just like with the alpha ova he's evil and creepy but not affiliated with shadaloo outside a scrapped sequel concept.) & m. bison(like with the eagle idol it's the closest to an origin to the psycho power outside stealing ingrid's crest in alpha 3,being just as intimidating as the animated movie having the best voice for the dictator period, almost being like how i'd imagine gill if 3rd strike got an anime/fleshing out the animated movie's goal of wanting to destroy the worlds leaders with super soldiers to control them instead of wars and him having berserk moments of the idol controlling him at the cost of what little humanity he has/his base being implied to be a temple the eagle idol is a god to with how he buys the rainforest it's in,calls the control room it's in a shrine and parts of it resemble ancient ruins than a military base especially the area ken's kidnapped in/guile fights zangief.)
love like the animated movie you feel the weight of strikes here(especially special attacks being "if you're lucky enough to survive a shoryuken your not getting up from the hadouken.),being comedically slice of life mixed with final fight (like dorai being a anime mike haggar/ashura being mad gear & could see poison/hugo in sagat's role in a new street fighter anime like in 3rd strike's manga ryu final.) to deeply philosophical in the teachings especially in ep 6(like the old master's a mix between gen and oro.)/dhalsim overall(loved his training way more here than any shonen jump series & actually remember a video about his teachings showing the authenticity of it in real life.:3) ,the difference in ryu & ken's attacks(like it references ryu's stronger hadouken/ken's shoryuken.) and the well done slow reveal of shadaloo being behind everything.
really enjoy the fights in the series especially fei long, the cave of ancients(love it being an ancient temple that forms illusions testing you controlling your intent to kill from going insane conquering your desire from going destructive foreshadowing the difference between hadou & psycho power.) & the final battle(enjoyed both being my favorite final battles in anime and like how compared to the animated movie ryu and ken fight m. bison with their full potential in the center of the universe the origin of all the fighting styles in the series and even after still getting overwhelmed showing their control during the fight growing to where the tables turn with ryu using the moves of his friends for what bison did to them ending with him using the hadouken powered up by his intentions killing the dictator for good where in the movie ryu/ken overwhealmed m. bison after besting him being strong enough to withstand his psycho power he tries fighting on their level as a last resort in the animated movie only to lose not understanding their determined bond but could've changed the ending to ryu fighting sagat again as a bookend even if it's implied m. bison used up all his psycho power trying to escape/like the difference of bison being dead with a few remnants left in 2 v while the animated movie has bison appear but shadaloo is nuked to oblivion.)
wish this series continued(would've liked to have seen e. honda with how i enjoyed him in the animated movie/easily could see him being a friend with ryu after he leaves for home at the end,dee jay and t. hawk after only showing up in the jp intro/how they'd handle blanka.)/had gotten a bigger appearance(would've loved to have seen it on toonami.) as it was an honest series about martial arts that i think is more true about it than any i've seen before or since(assassin's fist gets close imo.) & with how street fighter 6 brought back the animated movie's singer for it's final battle would absolutely love to see a new street fighter anime in it/street fighter 2:the animated movie's art style again with ryu,ken,chun-li & sakura kasugano on a world tour meeting the other street fighter characters throughout the series learning their styles and philosophy ideals.
I watched a few episodes on cable. Great hero journey for Ken and Ryu.
Though I'm aware this show is from the 90s. lol.
Man I remember seeing it for the first time and it was the bar scene and it was in 03
I honestly remember the Street Fighter 2V anime and how similar it was to the Street Fighter 2 animated movie. I honestly thought that Street Fighter 2V was great from start to finish.
Side note: I actually like the USA Street Fighter cartoon and thought it was alright.
The good one
Could somebody please tell me what is the song in the intro of the video?
I still have this anime on DVD.. And technically ken and chun li wasn’t like a love interest.. vega made it seem that way. Ken just wanted to save a friend he cared about.. fei long was ok.. i like how cammy and fei long had a interest low key.. they did come into the game together. The ending was ok, i just didn’t like how they kept replaying the same scenes in the fight.. especially when they might’ve hit bison in the right hand and he reacts in pain with the same scene but in his left hand lol.. i enjoyed your retrospective, keep it up
Same here bro. I felt like Fei Long and Cammy stood out better than the MCs.
