In German we have a saying "Was du nicht willst, was man dir tut, das füg auch keinem anderen zu", which translates to "What you don't want do be done with you, do not do to others". In others words, if you don't want to be lied at or shout at, don't lie or shout at others. I would interpret the Confucius saying in the same way. But in case of gifts, that's rather not very wise. I very often give away things I don't like, simply because I know it's something the other person likes or needs. Giving away presents that you like without thinking of what the other person likes is very meaningless. I would never give my sister a computer science book as a present even though that's my prferred literature, because she couldn't care less.

My example might not be a good one. Confucius definitely meant not to lie or to shout at others, as we don’t want to be treated the same way. Danke.
