I actually *really* like that SM57 IR. I typically don't like the 57/V30 combo, but here it sounds brilliant. The U47/blend... not as much. But this 57/V30 IR is a keeper!
I love U47 and U87 for electric guitar - have used U87s on my amp in studios numerous times and my favorite IRs are usually a blend of 57+U47 or 57+U87. The 57 has the aggression, detail, and sizzle, but the Neumanns smooth it out a bit with a balanced, meaty, natural midrange. It's also insanely good for doom tones. Massive.
I’ve actually done this accidental mic position you’re talking about but intentionally before ! (With a 57 tho). So I put the mic dead center in the middle of the dustcap and then I’ll kick it off axis. Most peoples version of off axis is near the outside of the speaker facing in but folks don’t seem to often do center facing the outsides. It’s a great position on occasion!
Wow, thank you, I definitely love you and the devil! 😍 By pure coincidence today I carried out my first tests of the low impedance trick using the 4 dynamic mics in my possession (loading them at 259 Ω). The Lewitt MTP 440 DM improved, but in general I'm not happy using it alone for metal sounds (it lacks the bite). However, it kind of does this U47 thing you're showing, with a smoother and more linear midrange than our usual dynamic mics.
Out of pure curiosity, try pointing the 57 at the speaker in the same position and angle as the U47 and what does that sound like? I think the 47 sounds like hot garbage solo'd but without hearing it in a mix it is always hard to tell how a mic is really doing for the song. The two together sound pretty good but not $28.5k more than an R121 and a 57 good. I'd run a ribbon before an LDC on guitar any day, and if I had to use an LDC I'd use something really transparent like the AT4050. Personally I tend to use a cheap Oktava ribbon and a 57 on my Boogie MkIV for my own punk rock stuff, but to each his own! Thanks for posting this.
Inexperience (with dealing with phase cancellation) between IRs always intimidates me from trying new IRs or blending IRs but i appreciate you demonstrating how this IR can be used in conjunction with an SM57 in a creative context. Danke!

Honestly prefered the 57 in all of these examples, even your blended example i felt lacked a bit of presence that would bury the guitars in a mix situation. Still very interesting video!
Honestly, is there a point in micing amps and cabinets anymore? I mean... I was going to go into it for I am kinda old school, but every day, it looks more and more redundant.
Its about pushing some air. Getting some room reflections in the recording. Those sorts of things. I love modelling myself, but a good recording still has its uses. Even if its a model into a FRS.
@@Bloor005 I guess you are right. But even if all the digital pish is gaining the upper hand, I'll still be old school and try to get my mic position right. BTW, there is some video online (Creating BIG GUITAR TONES with MONUMENTS!) whicht describe a method I am about to try myself in the not so far future. Using a Peavey Stealth 100 and a tripple X with a really mean swedish death metal tone. Maybe I'll get some of the meanest rhythm sound ever. Or maybe I'll learn something on the way. We'll see.
$30,000. for a mic to get a horrible sounding result. lol What's metal mean nowadays? When I got into it bands were saying we don't do it for the money or fame, overproduction & using a bunch of fancy gear is sellout stuff, if we can't play it live then it doesn't go on the album, using triggers means you're not strong enough to actually play your parts...
Considering how ubiquitos 47s were back in the 70s - 80s, its probably used on a lot of classic rock / metal albums. Also the whole overproduced / triggers thing..... Most famous metal records from late 80s and onwards have used triggers, Judas Priest Painkiller is a classic example. If it sounds good, dont matter what production techniques you use.
How do you like the IRs, boys and girls?
I. Love. Them.
I threw them in a mix I've been working on. Instantly, everything become more powerful and heavy. That mid-range is amazing.
There you go!

Haha dipped into the cabinet? So you found my off axis technique? Haha
so much for don't tell warren lol
Haha! So that was your secret sauce? I found it! 💪😜
@@KohleAudioKult directly in can be a little brittle, so off axis seems to work the best!
The man!! Every time I get a notification saying you posted a video its always worth the watch.
Of course it is 😎.
Thanks man!
More Kohle IRs? We won the lottery, folks! ❤

No one on earth blends guitar tones like you do
I’m not entirely sure about that, but Thanks! ❤️🤘

I agree. A lower mic pre impedance can sound great on dynamic and ribbon mics.
I recently did a video about this.
I love you as much as a U47 is great for metal tones! I love your sonic endeavours and thanks for the IRs! Can't wait to try them with the Grindstein!
“That’s a nice midrange, isn’t it?”
😏
It sounds kind of like the 57 with a low pass and a boost in somewhere the midrange
That sound kickass
Crazy that the 57 by itself still holds up so well after all this time. The blend was awesome!
A 57 is still the king of metal guitar tones

Just when we needed him most.....
The midrange of the U47 reminds me of the band Portal for some reason!? That blended IR sounds bloody gorgeous! 😁
Thanks! Enjoy it! 🤘

Great sound!! Thanks!!
I'd like to be with you when your recording this.
Thank you, sir.
how much spl did u47 have to handle?
btw. Kris you need to check out Steavens Poundcake Amps in case you do not know them! and yes they are german.. )
Oh really? Never heard of them.
I was careful with the 47. No worries. But it’s not a vintage ribbon mic where you need to be extra careful

@blackeyed. Verstehe! Ich guck mal.
Thx a lot fot the heavy stuff!
Really want to try this, thank you Kohle we love you 🖤
Enjoy!
I don't want to be wrong but I remember that this mic was used by Meshuggah for the Chaosphere record.
Great .... Interesting and useful... Thanks a lot.
The Beatles used a 47 on their combo amps in Abbey Road. You can hear it on Helter Skelter iirc
🔥 Another good one
Thanks buddy!
Anxious to test this tonight with the Softube Engl Savage Suite.
I really like the Engl from Wavemind

Just to mention Kristian...your voice over has a lot of background noise. Further freaking awesome video you did! Cheers!
That’s the fan of the laptop. Sorry for that
the blended sound kinda reminds me of l'enfant sauvage, especially with that riff around 7:37

What tuning is that? Why not just use a Bass at this point I think the drop tunings reached its limitations and maybe we should go back to standard 👍
