GoPro: Statue of Liberty Crown

    This is my wife Beth taking our GoPro Hero 3 (Silver) up to the top of the Statue of Liberty Crown. We were only able to get one ticket to go up even though we ordered 4 months in advance so she went because my laziness far outweighs my patriotism.
    She thought I would be able to see and hear her using the GoPro iPhone app but it cut off almost immediately after going up the first flight of stairs... That's why she's talking most of the way up. This video was taken Monday, August 26th, 2013.

    Thank you for posting this! I did this very climb as a grade schooler many many years ago, I'm 73 now! I love seeing the stairs, they WERE very tiny I can attest to that. I was going to ride the elevator up but my little brother, being a brat like they can be, dared me to go up the stairs, and of course I did! It was not a busy tourist day so we were not sandwiched in between tourists, etc. We were visiting NYC from our grandparents' home over in NJ. It is one of my favorite childhood memories; my own children and I donated to the restoration back in the 1980s but I've not had the privilege of taking them...Thanks again!

    .There are many cool things and little known things about the statue, "...inaugural fireworks for the statue took place on Nov. 1, 1886 at 7pm, red white and blue flares lit up sky as lady liberty's torch was lit for the first time." "Every part of the statue is symbolic. The severn spikes represent the seven seas and continents; the twenty-five windows in the crown represents the twenty-five natural minerals of earth..." These are excerpts from a chapter on the Statue of Liberty in my book, 'It Happened in New York."

It was a nice experience, though. I would not do the climb now however. Not as young as I used to be....LMAO!! I do remember those spiraling narrow steps too. Awesome video! Just did this climb with my wife and 8 year old twins this past weekend and it was amazing. I went up when I was about their age in the late 80's and had a very different memory of how long/hard of a climb it was (I swore it took at least an hour to climb). Still unnerving and tiring but the lighting and stairs are much better thanks to the renovations in 2012.

    Do they have an age limit I want to take my kids we went to New York around spring break but we didn't have enough time going back next month though. Is this safe for kids? I'm just curious.

    I remember going there when I was in 7th grade when we were learning about immigration. Kinda scary going up there, but fun! Imagine having that security guy's job standing on that ledge for hours? I couldn't...that would make me crazy!

    • @theishkid
      @theishkid  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was closed down for a long time, then it opened back up 4th of July in 2013 I believe and we were there just a month or two after.

    • @theishkid
      @theishkid  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      She was not limited in time up there... But you do have a stream of other people trying to get up there so you have to keep others in mind.

    Is it that steep all the way down? Do you go in groups of so many people at a time? You need a special ticket to see the statue of liberty? How far in advance?

    • @theishkid
      @theishkid  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you need a special ticket, probably way in advance. They might send a small group of 2-3 up at once if you are together.

    Are those stairs are narrow like that all the way to the top i see the way you was struggling to go up there and the crown is not a pretty sight.I was thinking of going there i lived in nyc all my life and never went and from the way it looks up there so small and confined i dont think i be going up there.Thanks for the upload for your video very much appreicated.How long it took you to walk up to the top please respond back.Thanks have a blessed day.

    • @theishkid
      @theishkid  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It only took her about 3 minutes to climb to the top. But three minutes of small stairs was crazy rough for her and as you can hear she was out of breath. She definitely said it was small up there. I didn't want to go because I am bigger and taller. She said I would have had a hard time being 6'4" so I'm glad I didn't go.
      Thank you for the nice response!

    I did the Crown. It was such a surreal experience, but so damn tight in there. Not surprised they limit it to only 200 people per day. Otherwise it'd be a complete nightmare

    i thought their would be an elevator inside for elderly and disabled and people with buggies as i am sure they would wanna visit the statue too

    • @theishkid
      @theishkid  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Frozen Ice Queen Elsa The statue is much smaller than it looks like on tv and movies. There is no room for that kind of stuff. Plus there were no ADA laws back when this thing was built.

    How can something so big be so tiny inside?

  • @marlisarobertson176
    @marlisarobertson176 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for your video! I have a couple of questions for you: 1) Do you think it was worth it despite the limited views and long walks up tight stairs? 2) My husband is 6'4, would this be miserable for him since your wife (who I assume is smaller than that) was having a hard time with bumping her head, etc? We both get motion sickness too from climbing tight, spiral staircases so it would have to be worth it haha Thanks!

    • @theishkid
      @theishkid  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm 6'4 as well and she said I would have spent the whole time ducking. I'm a big guy though too in addition to being tall so that's why I didn't want to try going up there. When I get in better shape I plan on making the trip up to the top despite having to duck. She actually went back up this past fall with my father and they both enjoyed it. It's a pretty impressive piece of history.
