    I don't know if you can get in Australia but you might look for a product called EMT gel. It's used for open wounds, cuts on animals. Here in the states we can get it at feed stores and on Amazon. It forms a cap over the open wound like an artificial scab that keeps bad stuff out and allowing the tissue to heal underneath.

      @amandah2866 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You wouldn't want that when dealing with an abscess because if any tiny bit of infection is left you end up creating a new abscess. It's actually safer to let the abscess drain any extra pus through an open wound like this than close it over. It's the same advice for people with abscesses and the basic premise behind drain tubes.

      Totally agree that drain tubes should not be used in treatment of abcess/cysts. The They create more infection as if treated well, the drainage process is natural and so much better. Capping the area does the same thing and usually means they also need a course of antibiotics when localised treatment is so much more effective.

      @@GuineaPigStuff yeah, I agree, I wasn't thinking. Tgesevwounds are more like open cavities and need to just drain & dry out. It's still great stuff tho probably not for this type of wound

    Please help ...got guinea pig with abscess that popped itself ....had ALOT of white stuff got out and seems like could be more but has a very loose pink sack inside ( is solid but very loose ) almost like a HUGE marble that wants to come out ...am scared to push out bcuz wanna know if it’s safe ( have never had experience with this but vet DID tell me it’s an abseess) sorry to say they aren’t much help otherwise
    They prescribed him antibiotics ( that I don’t even know if the one they prescribed is safe) and metacam for pain and inflammation
    He’s NOT sickly,is a healthy weight and doesn’t seem to be hurting or bothering him much when I clean it ...( have given him warm salty butt baths ...cuz is on his butt twice a day ) and when I touch around sides is VERY loose like just wants to pop out ....I guess I just want more advice and NOT to have to have him surgery if not needed or can be helped

    I just watched some of your videos and noticed you don't remove the sacs. The cysts will return so perhaps cysts need to be referred to a vet for pain free removal

    • @GuineaPigStuff

      Hi Debbie - what sac? Did you see one? Please see the updates and you can see how we treat these repeatedly pain free and they do not return. I think you will find her in these but there is also a separate video if you type 'update' into the video list th-cam.com/video/KLnsagBUlIo/w-d-xo.html

      @@GuineaPigStuff Debbie is right. All cysts are contained in a sac. When you cut the skin, and cut the sac the cyst can be squeezed out. However, the sac remains and will fill up again. The only way to permanently remove the cyst, is to inject Lidocaine into the skin around the cyst, then cut a larger opening, gently cut around the sac to free it from the skin, and take it out. Then you sew shut the opening and treat wound topically and orally with antibiotics. End of cyst cycle. It is not necessary to take out the sac, you can just keep emptying it out periodically if you don't mind. The surgery of course, is only performed by a vet.

    If I have two guinea pig boys that have lived together their whole lives would it be okay to add a third male pig?

    • @GuineaPigStuff
      @GuineaPigStuff  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi generally I would say no as it needs to be done carefully or with a rescue that can assist. The dynamics of the relationship that you have will change and this can mean that you may end up with both of them falling out, and in fact all of them falling out. We do have groups of males that are large in number but you need to be aware of the pitfalls and that if something is not working that you then need to change it.

    I love your videos...but your information about cysts is wrong. A cyst is not an infection, it's when a sack is formed under the skin which skin cells shed into. A cyst contains sebum and macerated skin cells, that's it. When they become injured or knocked or so big that the body liquefies the contents they become inflamed which then can lead to infection. If it smells and infection is present it's an abscess, not a cyst.
    My guinea pig has a rather large cyst, she isn't bothered by it, there's no thinning of the hair in that area and most importantly when my vet took a sample to analyse it showed no infection just sebum and skin cells. Me vet's advice was to keep an eye on it and if it starts to bother her he'll remove it...however it's not necessary at the moment.
    This is a very common misconception that bugs me.

      Amanda Harker you must be a vet or a vet tech?i have a boar with a cyst and the vet did not drain it. It was a lump under the skin.She said to leave it alone.

    • @amandah2866
      @amandah2866 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kayesguineapigs I'm neither a vet or a vet tech but after my first guinea pig got a cyst I did a lot of reading. I also watched a lot of Dr Pimple Popper videos and asked my vet a lot of questions. I would love to be a vet tech but the job is too physically demanding for me.
      Did your vet take a sample? Because without taking a sample it's difficult to know if it's a cyst or a lipoma (a fatty lump, not a cause for concern). I suggest stick to your vet's advice and if you see any changes with the cyst getting really big or it bothering your boy then go back to the vet.

    • @GuineaPigStuff
      @GuineaPigStuff  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Amanda as in the video, in this instance you can see the before photos and it is very clear that the piggie is nibbling away at it and it was getting hairless. This is an indication that it is going to rupture and needs to be treated.
      With regard to calling it a cyst or an abscess, you can see very clearly the contents of this are solid and it was slow growing ( therefore a cyst), however you can also see the the pus which is infection within the cyst which means we now call it an abscess. Sebaceous Cysts can become an abscess but not the other way around. So by definition both are correct but more importantly is how to treat and take care of this.
      For memory I think your piggies abscess is on the foot or base of the pad? I think I have asked you to send through a photo to admin@guineapigstuff.com Vet advice is always recommended but they need to be a cavy savvy vet.
