@@SaltyPretzel0 I'm not disagreeing with the comment, I'm saying that people do things even though they know there is a possibility of it hurting them, people obsess and like to tan even if they know it can cause them skin cancer just like people still like cigarettes even if it can cause lung cancer- addiction is born from something that initially creates pleasure for a person, just because nicotine is a drug and tanning is not, they are both one in the same, because tanning can be abused, just like cigarettes, and thus become like a drug to someone, just like exercise for one person may be normal but some people can become addicted to it, orthorexia ffs, don't try clap back when you can't read the subtext of my comment

That's true...the history and psychological reasons for skin bleaching makes it more understandable (although dumb and destructive) because in many instances, those people do it with a belief that it will help with social mobility (jobs, mates, various opportunities, etc), whereas tanning seems purely based on vanity and instagram likes...no historical significance. With that said, the bleachers should watch this to realize that they shouldn't bleach away that natural protection bestowed upon black/brown skin. I see my poor colleagues literally burn in the sun, while I'm just fine (although I still wear sunblock). I've never experienced sunburn and don't want to, lol.

Tanning can be pretty addictive. You ignore the long term consequences for the temporary lift that it provides. Darker skin hides flaws and makes all clothing and hair colors look more attractive against your skin. On top of that, the heat and radiation actually lifted my mood when I would leave a tanning session. It’s a hard thing to leave behind

I think everyone should just be happy with their natural skin. Nothing wrong with being dark or pale white! I always wear suncream and don’t stay in the sun too long. The sun ages white skin faster and we are at greater risk of skin cancer. A tan isn’t worth all the trouble

Christine Mihailova. Ginger people (myself included) who are usually super pale and aren't able to tan (just burn) apparently can create vitamin D in lower light levels which I guess is nice. I would say to people not to use the sun for tanning purposes just to get vitamin D and you usually don't need to spend too long outside in the sun for that.

I used to do a tanning bed twice a week because before I did people used to ask me "are you sick?" because I was so pale. Now, I have got a pretty obvious scar on the side of my head from the removal of the skin cancer. Be very careful and always use sun protection.

But when it became more available people found that in higher doses regularly it can cause you to "tan". And now if you get to many of them it can still cause cancers and damage your skin.

I was an absolute addict to tanning. I worked at a salon, owned my own bed, had a friend who owned a salon and a friend that worked in one too. I tanned multiple times a day, every single day from 17 to 31. I stopped shortly after my last and surprise baby at 29 just realizing after seeing a friend of mines husband who was a single father when she married him get one spot on his back just from the regular sun exposure and it killed him in less than a year. I have so many spots, so many and yet I've never been to a dermatologist but I need to. I almost immediately felt sick after I stopped tanning, and I stopped cold turkey. Like I said I had 3 children and I tanned everyday with each pregnancy as well but as she got a bit older I had that moment after seeing what happened to my friends new husband and I couldn't choose a tan over leaving my little girl and boys motherless. So I started with very strange symptoms and over the years they have suspected different things such as cancer after finding a huge lump in my breast, to MS and now lupus but I am as white as a ghost extremely low on vitamin D and now I cannot go into the sun, or be near heat without major consequences. It's like I have become allergic to the sun and heat. I don't know if any of what I'm dealing with was tanning related but all I know is after I stopped for my health I'm so I'll now I can't hardly have a life, I don't, I can't go in the sun or heat. I don't know all the damage the tanning has truly done to med but it seemed my body absolutely turned on itself when I quit because it doesn't know how to live without it. I'm 39 now and barely have the energy to shower most days, my skin is a mess and I truly think the addiction has done permanent damage and probably more to the actual skin than I even know. This all started because in middle school someone called me Casper for being too white. It followed me for the rest of my life and I risked dying for that tan and I am now so sick the kids I wanted to live for I can't even take to the pool. Just don't fuck with your health. Just live with who you are, I always loved pale skin and I let a couple of dickheads basically turn me into an addict willing to die to keep that tan. Your health is everything, it's number 1, with good health you can do anything. Once your health is gone you feel like you have already died. Well those boys were right I certainly do live like a ghost now, inside and out at night and have barely a life at all.

I'm glad I learned to love my pale skin. I'm the palest in my family and everyone always told me I look quite sick and should "get some colour", I even got pinched and slightly slapped , even my best friends family back then bullied me because of my pale skin "corpse kid" etc. There was a time when I tried really hard to get darker I would lay in the sun all day without sunscreen because red turns to brown after a while. I personally never wanted it but I felt like I had to be darker. I think it also has something to do with beauty standards because being pale isn't viewed as sexy but being tan is. I noticed that all races have some beauty standards that just don't make sense. Some Africans bleach their skin and some Europeans try so hard to get darker. It's insane! Can't we just love and appreciate how we look naturally?

I used to tan every day, sometimes in both the bed and in the sun. I have been diagnosed with melanoma three times between the ages of 25 and 28. It’s pretty clear that this will be a lifelong battle for me now, and I feel in my heart that I will eventually lose my life to melanoma.
Please please please learn to love your skin tone just as it is. You are worth so much more.

I have super white skin, like I could easily play a vampire in movies. It used to bother me because I used to listen to the beauty standards that were portrayed in the media, but after I learned about the risks, that even come with simple sunbathing without sunscreen I really don't care anymore. I'd rather not have skin cancer just from wanting to meet a certain beauty standard.
Also my really light skin really fits my style now, with only wearing black and stuff😄

My mum was diagnosed with Melanoma last year. She kept on going to the doctor but they kept saying there was nothing wrong with her mole. She wouldn’t give up though, so she tried one more time and then they found out the mole was going to turn cancerous if she didn’t get it removed. Luckily it was a very early stage of Melanoma and she got rid of it as quickly as possible...but if she hadn’t she would have had about two years left to live. She now has a big scar on her arm and a dip where the fat has been taken off but she said to me it’s nothing compared to cancer. She’s not old, she’s only 51 so Don’t play with your life. Take care of it. It’s the only one you’ll get. I hope everyone reads this and understands the risks and takes action. Thank you. Take care x

I was addicted to tanning for a decade. After finding a suspicious mole I continued to tan thinking it was a false alarm. When the biopsy came back precancerous I had to face the realization that my behaviour was self-destructive. After further biopsies with precancerous results I use SPF every single day. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. I've had to learn to love myself again. Pale is beautiful too. Embrace who you are and know you don't need to change to be beautiful.

I'm white af and I literally burn under the sun. I slightly tan after days. But I always protected my skin with a SPF. When I was 12 I fell asleep at the beach, there were clouds, but the sun rays burned me so bad, I'll remember it all my life. I love my porcelain skin and I don't want a skin cancer. Protect your skin, people. If you want to be tan, fake tans are a thing. Don't fry yourself, damn

My family is Dutch so I have very fair skin. I burn easily and I never get a tan I just peel. I can't understand why ppl would pay to burn their skin it's so unbelievably painful. I was at a beach recently on a warm day and stupidly didn't use sunscreen. It wasn't a really hot day just warm so I thought I would be fine. I was burnt so badly I couldn't move for 2 days. Never ever ever again.
