Last year at 35 I was diagnosed with melanoma, a fast forming skin cancer. This is now my reality all because I used to tan in tanning beds as a teenager through my early 20's. Don't do it, spray tan if you want a tan

This scares me. My aunt died from melanoma. And I go tanning once a week because it really helps with my psoriasis. I used to be on renegade infusions to deal with my psoriasis, but it bankrupt me. Tanning is a lot cheaper.

That is my skin color, and there's nothing wrong with it (look at Nicole Kidman...beautiful and fair). I felt shamed in high school in the late 90s when all the girls were bronze and I was very white so I tried tanning. I ended up getting skin cancer at 37. The thing is, I look at myself now with my natural skin color and I wouldn't change it. I use SPF 50-100 now, depending on how long I'm out and what I'm doing.

Everyone knows people are told beautiful is the opposite of what they are so the companies can make money, Asian and African countries are sold skin lightening products, European countries are sold tanning beds and self-tanners. I'm a very pale white GenXer & female.
I'm sharing my story in the hope that even one person reconsiders using a tanning bed or lower grade sunscreens.
I AM NOT ENDORSING OR PROMOTING TANNING BEDS OR MY STUPID METHOD!!!
I used tanning beds in my 20's. I did it a couple times during college. The last time I used one in college, I told the people at the desk I was only going in for 10mins. They left me in for 30. I rec'd SERIOUS burns. (During this time frame, you pushed a button to start the tanning bed. The only way to switch it off was via an emergency button...
Side note -- I'm too afraid of causing a fuss & a complete ppl pleaser -- there's 0% chance I'm hitting the emergency button. 😳
During this time, sun damage was becoming a regular topic, & make-up company's were putting SPF in their foundation's. However, as pale as I am, in order to even get a tan, I had to get a slight sunburn first. (Sounds dumb, yet true) In my mid 20's I developed a "method", I'd put on sunscreen & then go to the tanning bed place. I'd go long enough to get a base tan & then stopped using the beds, until the next spring/summer. This is how I convinced myself I was "protecting" my skin while still getting a tan.
Since that time in my life, I've had to get tetanus shots because extreme skin burns can cause lead poisoning. I've had sun stroke. I also get severely sick if I spend a cpl hours in the sun (even though I wear a high SPF)...I run high fevers & have had to miss work due to the sunburns. I'm extremely lucky that I don't have outer skin damage. My brother, OTOH, was diagnosed with skin cancer in his late 20's. It spread to his lymph nodes. Thankfully they caught it before it spread to his liver. He's experienced severe health issues during & after the cancer.
I'm the most pale person in my family. Everyone else can get a nice golden glow.
Before considering a tanning bed, or wearing a low level of sunscreen, use these personal situations as cautionary tales... Tanned skin can still be achieved by using a spray tan or tanning lotion!!!

It’s important to pay for a higher level tanning bed with UVA/UVB bulbs, those that can control the time and amount the bulbs distribute on each area of the body, don’t go every week, and buy good tanning lotion that will enhance but protect your skin as well. And eyewear!

Better to get acclimated before a major burn. I talked for two years straight and lived how it felt and the way it made me look until I developed a black spot under my eye and everyone kept asking me if I needed to get away from my abuser. I also red spots on my body from it.
