I cannot get enough of this amazing performance! I love this video.. three of the best musicians of all time George Duke, Rachelle Ferrell and Jonathan Butler - PRICELESS.
Back in South Africa, Jonathan Butler was actually more known for his singing ability. Its only when he moved overseas, he became known for being a great guitarist as well
The pleasure of meeting George Duke over a beer, and hearing Jonathon at the Air Jamaica Jazz Fest 1997 and now this pleasurable moment of hearing them with Rachelle,Larry,Lil John and others...a timeless blessing.
Absolutely. At a performance a while ago, a young Brother asked, "Man, why don't you sample? - that's what's up." I told him, " 'cause I can play, Brother. That's what's up!" I bought him a drink, and He & his Lady, and I jammed for the rest of the Show. We had a ball.
Saw Jonathan as a young teenager performing in front of a "white only" audience in Jo burg South Africa, he was amazing then and more so now… he makes me a proud South African… awesome musician!!! Brilliant!
this is the best live performance of this generation man. Its no surprise all the legends are on top of the game and have a chemistry like never seen before. I always come back to this. Sad George Duke passed on but we have his music and his signature to remember him. Legend. All the greats Jonathan Butler (Lead singer) George Duke(keys-PBUH) Rachelle Ferrel(BGVs) Brian Simpson Larry Kimpel(Bass)
This is a fantastic song! It's still on my playlist. Jonathan Butler is Amazing in his own right & performing with George Duke & Rachel Ferrell is icing on the cake. 💖
Jonathan Butler exploded on the scene with the show Video Soul on BET featuring host Donnie Simpson. Donnie was a cool green eyed brother with that smooth deep voice. You just trusted his judgment on the video coming up. Well Jonathan was guitar vocalist extradonaire reminds of George Benson with that amazing vocalist singing at the top of his range.. How can you not enjoy this performance especially with George Duke and other fine musicians.. He’s going all out on this one for us to enjoy.. and the singalong absolutely brilliantly done .. Rest In Peace George Duke.. LB October 2021..
Jonathan Butler is a singer-songwriter and guitarist who leads a life few can imagine. Born in South Africa under the shadow of apartheid and raised in poverty, Butler was the first non-white artist to be played on South African radio and appear on national television. Though his musical abilities would take him away from the world he grew up in, Jonathan would neither forget the plight of his fellow South Africans, nor the man that led them to freedom. It is for this reason Nelson Mandela credits Butler’s music as having inspired him during his imprisonment. In more ways than one, Jonathan Butler is representative of South Africa. - Jonathan’s story begins at a very young age when his father presented him with a homemade one-string guitar. Little did his father realize that he was giving way to a musical phenomenon. From then on, Jonathan’s musical gifts grew by leaps and bounds. In his early teens Butler won a local talent contest, affording him the opportunity to perform with a touring musical company throughout South Africa. On occasion he would perform at lavish concert halls for whites only, where he would not be allowed to use the bathroom, and the very next night he would perform in a dilapidated local township. Ultimately, his ticket to a new life was music... [Verse 1] Saw her across a crowded room And she looked so good Memories came rushing into my head, mmm There was a sparkle in her eyes Was it for me Or just my imagination running wild? Oh, yeah... [Pre-Chorus 1] I see the more things change The more they stay the same Thought I was past the pain But one thought of you (thought of you) And it's back again [Chorus] Sarah, Sarah What happened to you and I? Sarah... Sarah, Sarah How did the fire die? Sarah... [Verse 2] This time I said I would be strong Though emotions rush in Swore that I wouldn't fall apart, no way [Pre-Chorus 2] How could we watch our dreams Crumble into dust? Baby... There's so much more life has in store (in store) For the two of us [Chorus] Sarah, Sarah What happened to you and I? Sarah... (Sarah, Sarah) Oooh, how did the fire die? Sarah... Yeah, girl... [Bridge] I must admit, baby That love never died (love never died) 'Cause deep in my heart, girl A bit of you still survived [Sax Solo] [Pre-Chorus 2] How could we watch our dreams Crumble into dust, girl (ooh) There's so much more life has in store (in store) For the two of us [Chorus] (Sarah, Sarah) Oooh, what happened to you and I? (Sarah) Tell me, tell me... tell me, baby! Sarah, Sarah How did the fire die, baby? (Sarah) [Fade out] Yeah, yeah I'm crying out for you Said I love you, baby I'm strong out on you, baby Girl, don't walk away Don't turn away I need you, honey ♥ jonathanbutler.com/
