I'm 53 yrs old. I am an artist. I am an art teacher. And before viewing this, I thought I was a fraud. Like Roger, I have kept the same secret. This story made me cry because I now realize that I am not alone. That I am not a "fraud". That its not too late for me to find my own magic marker. Thank you for giving me hope and encouragement.

Love this for you! I feel like we are similar! I studied design, even illustration as part of that (many moons ago), worked as a designer, I've made many things over the years, but always felt like a fraud "compared to the proper artists"😕 How silly😂 - I've now decided I shan't waste a moment more worrying about such a thing and instead focus that energy on making art❤

The video inspired me. I've been thinking for the past week that maybe drawing isn't for me. I can already draw a few things, but I still have to erase a lot. I haven't had any motivation until the sentence "slow down, be patient" came up in the video at 3:38 . I've always wondered why my drawings never look like I've put any effort into them. I'm too impatient, even when drawing. I think I have to get rid of my impatience rather than practice drawing so intensively. So far I've learned quite a few things without much practice. Thanks!

This is such an awesome video! I remember when I decided to draw for the first time. I was so scared that I would be bad at it, and I was convinced that if I didn't succeed at the first try, I would always be bad at it. It was my therapist who convinced me to draw after a traumatic incident. She told me it would help me get my feelings out, and at first all I drew were angry scribbles. But I fell in love with it, and gradually I got better and better. I'm no expert but after all the sketching sessions from then to now, I am very passionate about art and drawing for my mental health and for fun! This channel has boosted my creativity and my motivation a ton, and I don't know if you'll get to see this, since you must get hundreds of comments, but I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for this and all your other videos. You're awesome! 😁

I realized when a person draws she/he goes to in another world of imagination and she forgets about all tesion and anxiety. that's why I wanna draw.but I'm not good at all... Oh my god this was fantastic!!! I loved every second of it, the visuals were so beautiful and charming, the music fit really well, and I loved the story!! I relate to it very much. We all need a Zoey in our lives. Although instead of waiting around for one to appear, we should all try to become our own Zoey.
I was surprised that the little girl was the one to teach the adult the lesson, since what usually happens is the opposite, and I really liked it.

Thank you for making this. I went to school as an art student. Some really bad things happened in my life and the passion to make art and draw went out of me. After years of healing, I have interest in it again. I find myself paralyzed with fear at times with the idea of trying to draw and not being good at it. It's a silly thought but I feel that because I went to school for it and have been drawing basically since I could hold a pencil, I should be good- but I am not.
I am 30yo and having to learn all over again. I needed a video like this. I am going to use my "magic pen" to start drawing again. Just for me. 💚

    That's my story too.
I drew cartoons when I was a kid (mostly Snoopy knockoffs). Tried painting a few yearsago, but I never learned to draw.
I fell away from art for the longest time (I have a Bachelor's degree in Management Information Systems.)
I started painting a few years ago. A friend of mine gave me a set of charcoal pencils one year for Christmas (pre-pandemic). I thought, "I don't know what to do with .". So, I set them aside for several years.
A few years later, a drawing instruction video showed up in my YT feed. It was called, "How to draw anything using basic shapes." I thought, "I can DO this!"
I watched the video, dragged out Ye Olde Charcoal Pencils, and I've been drawing ever since. I'm now working in pastels, colored pencils, and watercolors too.

This video, the animation, is so motivating, inspiring and RELATABLE. Thought it was just the magic pen that made him able to make progress, then it turns out its based on your true story.
I always thought I was the only one who couldn't draw. Of course I don't actually believe that I'm the only person who can't draw, but I barely made any progress that I stopped drawing completely. Eventually as I grew older I started reading comic books, manga, cartoons, anime, animation, tv shows, movies that it made me feel inspired and happy that I eventually started getting creative and coming up with my own personal story that I created in my head. Of course, I didn't want my story to be just in my head. I want other people to know about it too, but with illustration and stuff. That led me back to drawing again and of course, again. I was still pretty bad at it. But this time I didn't give up, surprisingly.
I didn't wanna give up because, I didn't wanna feel like a failure anymore. Art is one of the only thing that I'm SLIGHTLY good at. So I kept practicing, and practicing, and eventually I made some real big progress that it made me feel confident enough to try it digitally. It was hard at first. It was nothing like drawing on paper but because I kept practicing I was able to create my first digital art ever. Of course, I'm a human being, nothing I say or believe stays up forever. A few days ago I felt like giving up. I felt as if maybe art really wasn't for me after all. But this video made me feel motivated again.
Thank you so much, Danny. You made my day and hopefully you made others too! 😇🐱🐶
Also, thanks for reading this. I'm not really good at writing, so you can expect how long it took me to write this. But again, thanks!

Maybe the magic is in the repetition.
Not showing your work to people might be a good idea.
When people look at something like a drawing, their first impulse is to offer a judgment.
I try not to give my opinion...positive or negative.
    Especially with children!
Lest they begin to make pleasing others their goal.
So, instead, I say something like, “ Did you enjoy drawing that?” or “ why did you choose to draw that?” or “well, keep drawing!”

I feel so related to this video. I'm a late beginner too. Because I spent my youth believing I have no talent in drawing. And my belief was reinforced when I saw some other kids who did amazing drawings. But I always wanted to have a ¨talent¨ and finally got a sketchbook and started drawing. I noticed that only my first three drawings were bad. Starting with my fourth drawing they looked nice to me.If only I knew I could draw what I'm drawing today, I would start drawing in my earliest years and I would be graduated from an art school.
Everyone who reads this please don't think drawing is a gift reserved to a few people who are somehow talented. Tell everyone that they can draw too. It's a learnable skill. It's a matter of love. If you love to draw then you will be able to create beautiful drawings.

I’m now 39 but always admired art. But the most i was able to do was a stick figure. And not even a good one. Now learning by TH-cam and books and non stop sketches. I have saw such a vast improvement over the years. I use to think u needed the talent.

Congratulations Danny! Totally charming and delight to watch! Having met you some 6 years ago out in CA, just before Sketchbook Skool launched when you spoke in Fullerton, it has been fun to follow your artistic journey & join in with SS classes! You inspired me recently to commit to 2 years of daily picking up my paint brush. So far I'm averaging 6 days a week, so not bad! Hoping this video opens up a whole new path on your journey!

This is a wonderful, creative and inspiring video, Sir! I have aphantasia, and I have difficulty in creating art through imagination. I am very old now and to this day I still am a poor copycat 🥺. Thank you for sharing this. It is very timely, as I have been experiencing giving up again and dejection. You are an inspiration to struggling art enthusiasts like me. All the best, Sir Danny!😊

Thank you :) i used to draw a lot when i was a kid though it wasnt something really impresive. In middle school i watched youtube tutorial on how to draw a realistic looking dinosaur and learned it pretty quickly. I lost interest in drawing ever since in senior highschool and im about to go into university to learn design graphic which somehow i have to learn how to draw again. Ill be doing it again from 0

This was such an encouraging video! My story is similar except I haven’t gone to art school. I’m creative and have learned to call myself an artist. I am dabbling in drawing but desperately want to become more proficient. Life gets in the way of my dedication to the practice, but I will continue trying! Thank you for all the work you put into this! It was just what I needed to hear. ❤

Danny, I've been following you and this animation is beautiful. I lost the will to do anything for a long time. And I came here from your other video. I love this. I want to start drawing again and I am going back to the other video. Thank you for making this. It's beautiful and so encouraging.

I am grateful to you for creating this. Recently I have been afraid of getting back to drawing and simply holding my pencil. It felt like what if I draw and it turns out more ugly than before. I felt like I lost my passion and my reason why I even like drawing in the first place. But your story reminded me of the magic I felt when I was just enjoying the feeling of freely drawing stuff without any worries or fear. I am going to learn how to draw again even if I need to go back to basics. Thank you for making me remember of the magic!
