  • Callum (‪@DXCommanderHQ‬) very kindly sent me a set of the new EZY Clamps for my Expedition kit. In this video, I make them up and erect the antenna for the first time using them. I then go on to make a few contacts using my IC-705.

    I have been using stainless steel “hose” clamps with knob adjustment key for a few years here in the US. Available at most auto parts stores and DX Engineering.

      And I was about to buy a set very similar to yours when Callum tipped me off about these. More than one way to skin a cat as the old saying goes! 73!

    Great external review of a good product enhancement to the expedition model. Of course due credit goes to Calum for being the wizard he is lol ! Thank you Sir .

    Those clamps look very useful for many applications, a strong jubilee clip that won't rust or seize

      @@M0JSX I use a 12M Spider pole with the 49:1 at the bottom. Goes straight up then rest of the wire goes out horizontally towards the house. But I’ve noticed over time the sections can collapse, even with tape round the joins.

    • @M0JSX
      @M0JSX  ปีที่แล้ว

      That surprises me somewhat. There isn’t that much downward pressure from a simple wire. Either way, the clamps will solve that issue. 73!

    Great video Jonathan. I have a 10 dx commander but it's only used as a mast. Oh qc WW I will have to get on board with this. Will have to get an antenna up.

    Thanks for the video Jonathan, nice one. Would have been nice to have seen some shots of the DX Commander up in the air but understand you were under time constraints. Always a challenge trying to create a video when out in the field operating solo 👍 73, Jonathan M0XXJ

    Greetings Jonathan, I stopped by to check out the dxcommander ezy clamps, good video since I have been wondering if I should upgrade, I think I will. On a separate note while you were transmitting I noticed the 705 meter displaying compression? (I don’t have a 705) if so, it appears your level is set to high with the meter deflecting to 60dB which may cause some distortion. If I have misinterpreted this then forgive my ignorance. 73

    • @M0JSX
      @M0JSX  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Goober. I have my meter showing power output when transmitting. I’ve listened to my transmit audio and can confirm I’m not distorting, but thank you for being engaged and highlighting a potential issue. 73!

    I ordered a bunch of both styles of these clamps to retrofit my existing DX Commanders (the hex bolts for my 12.4 Signature that stays up all the time, and the wing nut ones for portable operations). I haven't been able to use them yet as it has been constantly raining for the past week with hurricane Ian.

    • @M0JSX

      @@M0JSX Thank you. I wasn't in the direct path, just had lots and lots of rain and maybe 48 km/h winds for several days. It was a good test to make sure my 12.4 kept standing.

    These look the same as ones I got in the spring. I've, probably unnecessarily, still used tubing on them. Once positioned, I've numbered each one with a white marker and cut off the "tail".

    • @M0JSX
      @M0JSX  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Raymond. If they are the same as the ones DX Commander sell, the tubing is not at all necessary. 73!

    Because they were Callum's recommendation at the time, I used Jubilee clips, but I bought the ones with integral blue plastic thumbscrews meaning a no tools install. I agree it's a bit overkill for a temporary push up install, and these plastic steanglehold clamps do look like a far better option. Progress eh?

    • @M0JSX
      @M0JSX  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Completely. But now I have them, I probably won’t erect the antenna without them. It probably adds 2 minutes to the erection time, but ensures it won’t fall down. I’ve had sections collapse on me even on short operating stints previously. 73!

  • @nathanw851
    @nathanw851 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    On Cal's flame thrower; If it can finish off a Crème Brûlée it's more than enough for plastic. I don't see the point of these for the expedition, if I'm being honest. Mine has never collapsed from a stiction fail. On a permanent erection on a classic, signature, or nebula, these things make perfect sense. For the Exped, just hone your twist and yank action for a happy time.

    • @M0JSX
      @M0JSX  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hiya Nathan. I think it will largely depend on how long you are keeping the antenna up for. If only for an hour or so, yes they are probably overkill. If you are erecting for an overnight or longer I would suggest using them for the ‘just in case’ factor. 73!

  • @DanMarkland

    How are these working for the upper narrower sections?

    • @M0JSX
      @M0JSX  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The top 4/5 sections are not reinforced as the clamps have a minimum radius of around 20mm. However the tension the top sections are under is much reduced compared to lower sections. You can use some insulation tape around those sections as a ‘belt and braces’ measure.
