    😀I like CAT's in Ham and "USB-Soundcard". This have to be the standard for each new radio (also HT's) 😒It’s bad that that the Demodulation is limited depending of the Frequency. Between 88 und 70 MHZ there is only WFM selectable (and not the for me needed FM and NFM, etc.) ♥I hope they will fix it by firmware upgrade, and allow every demodulation in the whole frequency range.

    $999 Canadian for a tri-bander without IP67 rating? Ouch. Menu and user interface vibe on this 2024 Kenwood radio is reminiscent of a 2005 era Nokia E61 cell phone. Love the wide range HF receiver function though. At this price I would expect IP67, and a modern user interface, and probably, ability to very quickly and efficiently send text messages. The ancient 1990s style messaging via creaky APRS features just feels so janky and broken.

    I would like you to hand me that Retivis kit, show more on antennas, & ICOM kit that is easily affordable (under £400). I already have an IC 7610 that I'm still trying to find my way round how to drive it. I have the latest desk microphone & speaker for it. What's new in the peripheral kit range for all radios, although for ICOM would be nice apart from antennas? On that subject, an ICOM version of the ATAS would be very nice or an ICOM to ATAS/ATAS to ICOM interface. Kind regards, Ray, W5/M0RAY. 😂

    Hi Jonathan, Not sure about Hamfest but on the Retevis, I’d love to know if that latest software version allows you to configure a one-touch toggle open squelch button. I have the original Anytone version of that radio (AT778UV) in and it doesn’t have that capability, even though the smaller AT779UV (Retevis RA25) does. To me it’s an important feature as when working mobile, stations get weak and clipped, so a quick way to toggle squelch open without looking is great.

Apart from the main manufacturers, it would be good to see some of the smaller product makers, who make accessories and useful gadgets. The cottage industries. Thanks for the review, I don't think there is sufficient to make me upgrade from my D74, even though I like the new features. The waterproofing spec may not have been available at the time of this video but the Dust and Water Protection rating is quoted as IP54/55, which is good for use in wet weather but not immersion. Like a lot of products, it's very annoying that the price in pounds is the same as the price in dollars.

Because I am able to hear my H8 triggering the repeater nearby, but I can not receive other voices, only scrambled response. Its not the squeltch, CTCSS is set right, direction is minus and correct, offset is correct also. I was thinking that the repeater might be only compatible to digital. Tried other repeaters too, with the same result. Need help.

    The screen is a problem inversely proportional to its size. It’s not much bigger than the screen on the FT5D (a hand talkie)… That giant knob on the front shouldn’t be there. The 400 was a better configuration of screen and knobs. The interface is desperately in need of a professional that can help design it. The “keyboard” is in alphabetical order. WHO THOUGHT THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA? This radio needs a USB port so you can attach a keyboard for APRS messaging. Or at least allow a Bluetooth keyboard to connect, something that can be done in an update. Why are there no bands on this radio? I can get an HT with bands, but NOT a mobile radio? I am looking to buy my first POTA radio. The 705 and FTX-1F are both being considered. Other hams have told me that 10 watts is a bit low and they prefer to work between 20-50 watts for SSB. Do you have any thought on the power needed for a successful POTA? Love your videos.

    • @M0JSX
      @M0JSX 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Craig. To be honest, it is best to start think about the antenna and work back from there. If you intend to use a full size resonant antenna (dipole, EFHW etc) then 10W should be enough to make plenty of QSOs (see my POTA video with the radio-stuff EFHW). If you wish to use a loaded whip antenna (Slidewinder, Mad Dog Coil, Wolf River Coil etc) then you might find that 10W is a bit of a struggle and something with 50-100W is required. My preference would be for a full size resonant antenna and 10W. This makes battery power a little easier too!

    Good explanation. We actually have a crossband repeater in our club communications trailer. We work a cross-country marathon each year where our operators at the start/finish line can't reach the 2m repeaters in the area reliably because of the mountains. We set the crossband repeater up to transmit to the 2m repeater and locate the trailer in an area a few miles away where it can reach the repeater. Then we transmit from the start/finish line on 70cm to the trailer which then re-transmits to the 2m repeater. We have to remember to give the repeaters a second to both key up, but the communications are very reliable. The other operators on the course who can reach all the 2m repeater because of their location just transmit to it and the operation is reversed. It works great.

    X Band repeat variation. Assisting at a RAYNET supported city centre event: FT5 on low power (.3w) into FTM-300 in my vehicle (5w out), parked close by, to access a 70cm repeater being used as the central communications platform because the location of the support station was in a TX blind spot but I could hear the repeater on the HT without difficulty. So to reduce the duty cycle on the FTM-300 and therefore the power requirement I programmed the FTM-300 to RX on 2m, TX on 70cm with a CTCSS for repeater access. I know for previous experience using the FTM-300 on a fully duty cycle can use up a considerable amount of power very quickly.

    Something that I would be interested in using. I have a FT8900 and a FTM500 which both do cross band repeat. I work outside and would enable me to see these up in the car with a separate battery to run the radio and using a handheld, keep in contact with a local net of evening. Trying to dig through various OFCOM documents to find out the rules and regs regarding their use, max output power etc. Intermediate/Full can only set them up ? Believe this is section 4.5.4 in the OFCOM document released on the 21/02/24 - Amateur Radio Guidance Previous employer we had vehicles at work that had a second AIRWAVE radio in the car, which could be put into cross band repeater mode for use in poor coverage areas of London.

      I think you can set one up so long as the output power is less than 5W based on the licence changes made earlier this year. Perhaps give Ofcom a ring on Monday to confirm?

    Here in the U.S. Areas that are saturated with repeaters generally discourage the use of cross-band repeating. However, out here in the more remote rural area, we use both temporary and full-time cross-band machines. I like the Kenwood TM-V71A as it can be remote controlled from a UHf radio with DTMF memory feature. Important to put the radio in medium or low power transmit mode. 73 de n0km

    Hi Jonathan another nice video, thanks 🙂 Caveat for anyone considering buying a V or UHF vertical: Some are biased for the upper (FM) portions of the USA bands, so not best for the UK bands. Caveat Emptor! Hope that helps! 🙂

      Thanks Tim. That is true, however in my experience the Diamond stuff is broadband enough that it works. 😊
