Private Note to my QRM Station

  • We have had three stations that QRM me. We have used KiwiSDR to track down two of them. This station is the newer one and we are close to tracking him down too.. I would prefer that we didn't have to try. Anyway, I say it all in the video. I'm not angry, I just want to understand him and help him out. PS - When I say "we", I refer to an Army of volunteer folks and local clubs who help me out with the DF problem and intelligence. Thanks. Callum.

Biggest mistake you can make to anyone who deliberately sets out to annoy other people is to acknowlege them because the minute you do you give them exactly what they want - their own skewed version of validation. These sorts of people don't want solutions they want reactions and even if you then go on to say their actions aren't bothering you in their heads they will still believe that they are by the very fact that you've acknowledged their actions. :(

    • @asystole_
      @asystole_ 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

This is absolutely the solution. Give these people no air. Do not acknowledge them in *any* way publicly, because this is exactly what they crave. If you must, direction find them (as Callum is doing!) and let them know in private that "you know where they live" (perhaps phrased in a slightly less threatening way :)) but again, not in public.
All that said I absolutely admire what Callum is trying to do here and he clearly has a lot of empathy - I hope it works :)

To be fair, Cal has echoed this exact thought on stream before.
Changing the medium has a lot of power. This isn't a ham talking to another ham over some vibrating fabrics of reality.
This is a man who has some reach using his reach to try to help people.
This demonstrates two things: you can't shut Cal up, because you can't cause QRM on TH-cam, and that Cal didn't "lose".
Not responding looks very much like being cowed, like "they won". Not to you or I, but to the folks who act this way.
People like this are still people. They have a reason they're doing the things they're doing, and they're likely to have a much harder time justifying doing it if they're not getting the reaction they want.
They want Cal upset, angry, cowed, embarrassed. Showing them that he's not any of those things is, again, a powerful message.
Cal isn't shaken, he's not upset, not angry. He's just disappointed. That difference doesn't come across on the radio, but it comes across very well on video.

@@b4ux1t3-tech no one was suggesting he was but people are people and this kind of behaviour is universal whether they are a ham or not. Being a Ham doesn't change peoples basic behaviour...

@@Bad-wolfe the thing is, I disagree with the premise that ignoring problems makes them go away. It's never proved to be true, in my experience.
Ignoring someone like this makes them feel like they got to you. Yelling at them makes them feel like they got to you.
Calmly asking to speak to them privately to establish a dialogue does not look like they got to you. It looks like compassion. If they're not used to compassion then, at the very least, this is a chance for them to experience it and maybe, just maybe, figure out they prefer that to trolling.

    • @Bad-wolfe

@@b4ux1t3-tech we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one. I believe the individuals involved have a history of this kind of behaviour and its highly doubtful trying the 'be kind' approach will work.
These people are interested in causing disruption and they are not interested in discussion.
Your theory sounds nice in principle but when dealing with these types it doesn't work in practice.
They wanted a reaction and now they've gotten one. I strongly suspect that this will only serve to encourage more of this behaviour from them now because now they know they are getting acknowledgement the next step they'll want is a negative reaction because that was ultimately their goal from the onset

We had a station on 2 metres back in early 1980's objecting to our net. We called him the creaker. He would hold the PTT button down and his mic would creak as he held it in hand. We just carried on chatting in our usual friendly way, talking about technical stuff and arranging pubs to meet. After a few months of this we got curious and one of my mates tracked him down to Blackheath, London area, but couldn't find actual house. The next day i went out and nailed the exact address. Over the next few days i collated all public info i could find on him, including name from electoral register, name of daughter who lived with him, tel number and of course call sign. The next time he came on creaking, i read out everything. We never heard from him again. Not so easy to DF on HF, but still possible given help from hams in different areas or countries.

I once had an old radio that had such a wide signal and I didn’t know the harmonics were so strong I was inadvertently radiating a signal on other ham bands unintentionally. When our Radio Club had a technician that brought in a new piece of equipment and asked for members to bring in radios to test as part of the demonstration I volunteered my radio and OMG did we get a big surprise and big laugh out of the test results. Well I retired that radio and got something else. Sold the radio cheap at a ham fest with a disclaimer that it was radiating spurious signals and needed work. Another commercial radio tech bought it for a project. I got lots of ribbing for a long time about that rig. 😂

Some people get some kind of weird satisfaction causing disruption. Other cannot stand the notion of someone that they see are similar to them being successful. They make it their mission to tear others down for no other reason than they can and a need to feel in control or to exert control over others. Giving them the reaction they expect feeds them. Giving them Callums reaction at least opens the door to a conversation they likely lack the spine to have but as has been said they got a reaction, at least here the door here is opened.

One of the great characteristics of radio is that the "ether" has no memory, they can make some big waves but when they are gone there will be no trace that they were ever there. When such activities become very public - as in your TH-cam case they are - then I think it is beholden on Ofcom to track them down and hold them accountable, lest they encourage others to do the same. In the (good ?) old days they used to stick heads on poles. Nowadays I think a public shaming and revocation of licence/fine should suffice.

It's getting out of hand, it's getting out of control, but the worst thing you can do is acknowledge them. I commend you for taking the gentleman's route trying to take care of it between the two of you. They won't respond, they will continue and it will get worse. That's where my faith is lately and I hate that, I hate being that negative and I have the bleak outlook. As a M7 license holder I find your comment quite insulting.

I once made a guy's life bad for 5 minute's. It was a contest and I had never seen a contest before.
I got a contact and I moved frequency and got ignored.
I realised later he had already logged me, I had a couple of drinks.
I thought he was being a dick he thought I was we had a little word here and there, I realised I was actually in the wrong so I switched off.
Just man up and admit you're wrong.

Get people who can help involved. If it continues, then bring it to the appropriate officials, or people who can help with the process of shutting these lids down.

dont feed the trolls. talkin to them, angry or friendly has never improved anything.
the only thing that works is triangulation and to put a sewing needle into his coax then clip it off the needle on both sides of the coax.
He will never find that spot, and has to replace the coax. That would deliver the message and can be done on the outside of the house usually.
If he catches you and calls the police, then the police will get to hear both sides of the story :)
Since we all are too lazy, or law abiding to do any of that, we have to admit defeat, and change the mode to digital for a while.
VaraC is great for ragchewing in groups or solo, and not much fun to try and qrm.
tl;dr - dont feed the trolls.
We have the same problem on a different frequency - very persistent guy, he is at it for years - and because there is always someone acknowledging him, he will keep going...
same as on VHF, china is now flooding the market with el-cheapo transceivers - they are sold to anyone these days
expect the situation to grow worse.
