- The DX Commander Expedition pole, Roly Coil Mk2 - 80M Vertical Antenna 9.68 Metres tall.
A base loaded DXpedition pole for use on 40/80M bands, with the use of the 40M element. The coil gives a very low angle of takeoff making it great for DX, add more taps for more bands greater flexibility...

Coil: 50 turns 5mm apart on a 54mm OSD plastic pipe. tapped at turns 8,10 and 12 I used DX10 wire about 8M long. 16uH

Good one Mike! I am currently on hol with my DX-C Expedition and the bands are dire and 40m is knocked out by local QRN. I now wish I had 80m, so will be looking a this solution when I get home. Thanks for the mk2!

Now that was sooooo much better than the first effort with the threaded pipe huh :) A heap less frustration for sure.
The "Q" is sharp as is every base loaded vertical hence the taps...... cheers

That was a great way of adding a "shunt" from the coil and having the extra taps. Many great antennas were developed around a "shunt" adding that touch of capacitance.
I am curious what this application produces.

Hi Mike, I see you made two 80m loading coils, one with taps at the top and the other with taps at the bottom. Does it make any difference which one we choose to use ?

Hi Mike. I like your videos - great job. I love how you keep rolling and show us things that others miss or cut out. While it is not technically the best camera job it does help when people are trying to see what your doing. Good Job. At about 9:40 you do some SWR tests and say there is a sharp Q. I know its a pain but aren't you meant to walk outside and change the position of the taps before you move up the band to check the next round of SWR? I think if you had a tuner either in the radio or an external one you could position the tap on the middle one and the tuner should bring it in. If no tuner then it's a manual adjustment of the taps in reference to the desired part of the band. Keep up the good work.. Glenn VK2HTV - Radio waves TV
You are right, moving from tap to tap will widen the bandwidth, I was trying to show that each tap has a narrow width and as you say if you use an ATU. No need to move taps.. 👍👍
You could put a relay at ground to switch coil in/out so you can use other bands.How did you get the groves in the coil form Mike?
