    It was June, 1968 when I enlisted in the Corps. It was January, 1969 when I landed in Da Nang. It was 22 February, 1969 when I took my third wound in the A Shau Valley with Alpha 1/9, commanded by Lt. Wesley L. Fox, MoH, died in November, 2017 may he rest in peace. My Platoon CO, Lt. William Christman died 22 February, 1969, Navy Cross (posthumous). Our Company Exec, Lt. Lee Herron died 22 Februrary, 1969, Navy Cross (posthumous). May they rest in peace. Forty two Purple Hearts that day...in one company. Every officer, including Lt. Fox was wounded...or killed. One day. And in August, 1969 I was put on medical retirement, a little more than a year after I had stepped off the bus in San Diego. I was 19. I remember it all. Fifty one years ago, last February. Just another day.

    My dad landed in Vietnam in June 1968, he was assigned to III Corp 1st I.D. under the Command of Major General Keith Ware, (CMH WWII ) in Lai Khe , Bến Cát, Bình Dương Province, Michelin Rubber tree plantation. He was promoted to Sergeant E-5 with a command of 8 grunts under him not but a few years younger than he. He said, " Combat is your worst fear 10 fold." Let's be fair, here, I was a teenager when I saw this movie. I grew up watching Tour of Duty and China Beach. The ambush scene was my first exposure to how fast a normal day can turn real shitty and chew YOU and everyone WITH YOU up in a matter of SECONDS! Even IF you're doing everything right! However, I still think the best ambush scene, as far as Vietnam is related, and realism, was the one from Forrest Gump. The "popcorn flashes" of muzzles firing in the treeline, tracers whizzing by at a terrifyingly close...TOO CLOSE for comfort height and speed was unbelievably realistic. The M-60 gunner and his "A-gunner" blown to bits in an instant with a direct hit from either an RPG or (doubtfully) a mortar round was intense as well.
      However, when this movie was made, virtually no one else of age to serve had EVER seen combat...not like that! So, it stands to show how little our generation knew about "REAL war". And what went on with Samuel L. Jackson and the NVA officer was probably spot on as to what would have actually happened if EITHER side had caught the other red-handed calling the shots. War is UGLY! Let's not get cocky and get into another one anytime soon.

    • @Lajos_Kelemen

      @@hrdknox2000 Most people, don't have a damn idea of what war is like.
      I was taught about when I was very young by my family, as they wanted to discourage me from ever serving, understandable knowing what my grandfather saw during WWII.
      3 years in a siberian gulag, where your piss froze just as it hit the ground, your toes froze off and there's nothing to eat, and of course that ain't all he's been through.
      In his diary at one page he mentions how he was transported in a truck and how it was filled with bodies burned to crisp, said the stench was nothing like he's ever smelled before, so unbearable.
      So yeah I was pretty angry that one time when this swedish girl said that they should have a war on their own soil so they should know what the migrants feel and felt like where they came from. If she'd really know what horrors war bring she wouldn't throw that word around so lightly.

      Dude, I had the same reaction watching Platoon with my dad and older brother. Never saw him cry before, nor after that. He was drafted at 19. Never met a tougher man. Taught us kids to not be whiners or pussies.
      You ain't bleeding or nothing's broke, you ain't hurt - get back out there. Didn't matter which sport or a neighborhood dust-up - get back out there.
      I never served; my friends and I were worried about a Gulf War draft. I was on the university golf team.

I'm glad things like this happen, sure it's awful what happened to these people, but take those pictures, burn them into your mind. Not so pretty ain't it? I have not been succesful with communicating here. I explain- Vietnam war was a stage to extend life on the planet. But people here give the excuse "we did not take care of the veterans, because we believe on peace".. And I say "I just explained to you, that you and your family would not be alive and on the planet to this day, had we not extended life on the planet back in Vietnam.. Your excuses to be ungreatful- they dont go far. I have truly never seen anything like living on this planet. So many of you, you think you know it all.

    To be fair... wouldn't the correct question be "Second Lieutenants *who died in action* + Vietnam 1968 + Hot Landing Zone"? Because some Second Lieutenants certainly survived, still live today and therefore would fuck up the calculated average of 16 minutes.
    It's still a depressing statistic, but me being a fascist and all I really like my order.

    • @Mikanoes
      @Mikanoes 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those surviving Second Lieutenants must have been REALLY good at not p!$$ing of the troops under their command. Because, rumor has it, those Second Lieutenants didn't die in action. They died due to friendly fire because, the orders of someone who hadn't seen a day of combat before showing up, were very likely to get every soldier under their command killed.
      Got told a story once that a Second Lieutenant dropped into an active combat zone, and his first order was to tell the soldiers to field strip their weapons. In an active combat zone. Those officers tended to get shot by their own troops.

    I'm not even a marine and I feel like the character of the prosecutor was a disgrace, taking cheap shots, having no respect or regard that fellow marines are dead and doesn't consider that a good enough reason to take action, and that when he lost the case he still wants to find another way to prosecute the man for something that happened when he was still in diapers. Did they disclose in the movie whether or not he ever served in combat? Because I wouldn't be surprised if he never had, would just be the cherry on top the POS sundae.

      Well in all honesty, he did say "I'm not a hired gun" and that he wouldn't seek the death penalty, he was really just doing his job, as the law required him to do. Granted he did constantly repeat himself, trying to reiterate over and over there were no weapons in the crowd to try to sway the members and witnesses.

    compare medals ok i had a family member who served vietnam and the korean war aswell along with that he flew awac planes in gulf war he had over 30medals was in air force for 15 years or so and in marines for 10 years he died with rank of master sergeant.

    • @fonetree
      @fonetree 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure he did. First of all you're talking about a 40 year career in the military, from Korean War thru Gulf War. Then you say he flew airplanes and was in the Air Force and Marines for 25 years and got out with the rank of Master Sergeant. Literally none of these things are possible.He would have to be over 60 years old flying planes in the Gulf War(not happening). Enlisted service members do not fly airplanes. And there is a limit on how many years you can serve in the Marine Corps at any given rank. Also, 30 medals in two wars that only rated a few for your service, and maybe a handful from the Gulf. So unless he was Rambo himself, I find your story to be full of shit!

No way for his family to know that he was in the tank... Imagine how he felt- and then poof, like magic, pulled up to Sully for his daily 3-hour exclusive commitment. Heaven's king took presidency as the red grimore holding tank was under gods jurisdiction.. Few people knew that.. Gods son did not know that.. He was pulled up to Sully and able to notify him that he was stuck in the tank.. We immediately turned it back- we had to empty the entire tank to create hell.. Gods son was not in it this time, satan did not go for him again..

When casualty estimates happen you can usually guess that the wounded will be roughly double the dead so around 120,000 Vietnam vets are suffering from some sort life altering wound or wounds.

    Life expectancy of an aerio-gunner in WWII: 19 seconds.
    In 1968, a young man of draft age had a better chance of dying on America's highways than in Viet Nam.

    • @Aristocratic13
      @Aristocratic13 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You mean less a chance of dying in a highway?

    • @jerrydiver1
      @jerrydiver1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You do understand that 1968 was the first year for a coupla things...the first test of the new and untested 'Airmobile' strategy, with it's main tactic of airlifting men into an area the enemy would choose to stand and fight for, so that we could then smash them with an overwhelming force of 'combined arms', in a setpiece battle in a time and place of our choosing, rather than taking casualties to that same force from endless ambushes and disappearing enemy forces. And the draftee military was taking over en masse for the volunteer force of aging professionals, many of whom had experience from both WW II and Korea, and had veteran leadership, as well, officers who wouldn't lead them into ambushes and get their packages shot off. The casualty count, be it daily or weekly, was not in the huge numbers that it was about to be, with Uncle Sam pushing hard into enemy controlled areas with that new and inexperienced army that would only learn through being blooded in battle. And stop shooting your mouth off about things you know less than nothing about. Do a little research on the ACTUAL B-17 missions flown from England to France, and later Germany. 19 seconds was probably the average time it took to finish laying a load of bricks in their shorts when they saw their first German fighters coming straight at them. And those are the members of America's 'Greatest Generation' whom we were burying during the 70s, 80s and 90s at a rate of about 1,500 a day. Not very many of them left, now, but you'd do well to find one who will talk about it and chat him up for a little while.
