This video might be 9 years old, but it's still one of the most straightforward videos on the topic. Thanks man, seriously. Time to practice, as I live on two big rolling hills and it's my biggest fear as a brand new rider
I just got an R6, and been practicing it, my first bike and kept stalling it like crazy lol...thanks for the tips! I live in California so every road is pretty much a hill so it's important to be able to do this.
A couple years ago, I got stuck on a hill in Renton, WA. A steep hill! I had no knowledge of using just the back brake for hills and was panicked, fearing that I would shoot out into traffic as I was having to rev my throttle in order to avoid sliding back. I ended up backing down the hill inch by inch (LOL...hilarious)..no cars behind me, thank goodness. After that, I knew I had to get some instruction on this. They don't teach you this in those MSF courses...unfortunately! There are very few videos on this...so thank you.
They don't teach hill start in England? I thought it was standard haha well you definitely got it right! I was afraid to do hill start in the beginning :(
Same thing happened to me today!! Except instead of inching backward and downhill, I actually chucked the bike into neutral, hopped off, and WALKED my bike to the OPPOSITE side of the road (so now facing downhill) and went a different way lmao. Thankfully again no traffic, I was actually parked in a backstreet. The bike is only a 125 so i was wondering if it just didn’t have the power for a hill take off? Which is concerning bc what happens in traffic LOL
Hahaha, one of my nightmares! Thanks for lesson! I'm 47 yrs old and, even I rode bicycle for 40 years (I'm riding a Trek right now) I just started to learn riding a motorbike. I have a H-D Super Glide 2013 and 3 of 5 attempts in my training area I stalled. The most irritating thing was my trainer - a 43 yrs old Harley rider, 25 years riding - was circling around me in his much heavier Electra Glide "why are you stopped?" :)) then he took me back to clutch-brake training. Greetings and ride safe.
Very helpful and much appreciated. I'm riding as a learner on my duke 125. Hill starts are the one thing keeping me on the same boring routes. Thanx for the help. Tomorrow shall be practice day!!!
HA!! I was practicing taking off outside my house which is on a hill. Going down was fine but I was using the front brake to try and launch uphill lol. I was like 'HOW THE HELL DO BIKES START ON HILLS WITHOUT STALLING' ahaha thanks for this video
+Harry Murment Me too! My husband kept telling me to give it gas, but I was holding the hand brake and I couldn't figure it out. Now I'm going to try with the foot brake. My problem is that I start to roll back.
Thanks buddy.. there is this slope in my place and heavy traffic as well..., i stall the bike there and then it moves back. Well its embarassing plus the people on the road starts to shout.. will practice this one..
That's the correct way to do it. It can be tougher if you are riding two up. You need to make your passenger aware that they are to sit as still as possible since you are holding the bike up with only one foot on the ground.
I use to hold the rear brake on uphill stop/start, but I got lazy and just learned to hold the front brake and gas out, feather the clutch while slowly releasing the front brake.
Thanks for vid! I wish I had camera on my first day of riding. EmbRrassed myself so bad trying to go uphill. Had to get off my bike and push it up. I avoid hills. I gotta start learning.
When I was testing out a bike that I wanted to buy, I made a left turn down a street and it had a REALLY steep hill. I tried a couple different things and nothing worked, did what was in the video but I guess the road was crappy because my rear tire started skidding/slipping. I just had to back it up at an angle turn around to go the other way lol
I got my first bike aprilia rs 125. First time riding it today and I had trouble up hill starting on a red light, I will sleep mediate, and dream tonight about it...thanks for the video
ya steep hills are harder but remember to hold the rear brake until you feel the revs drop and then you give it more gas while taking off your rear brake :) You'll get the hang of it :)
I've just started riding having problems with down shifting a or flipping into neutral I'm going to get a gear indicator. I struggle with doing everything at once but I'm getting better every day you just need to be confident it would help if I knew other riders to go out on rides with
Timing is key in this situation, after my first slip ups on the hills I was able to do it properly. This technique is perfect but eventually you won't even have to use the rear brake. I Balance my throttle and clutch now. keeping the bike in its friction zone keeps it in one place. I even use my front brake to hill start at times.
Nice bike, what model is that exactly? Im about to get my first bike and my garage has this ramp which is very steep and im sort of afraid to go down and up the ramp, but I'll try this out. Thanks!
So I'm a new rider and have a Suzuki GSX500...it's enough speed for me as a beginner who is a bit hesitant to go terribly fast. My biggest struggle is getting into and out of my friend's garage. it's a slight downhill and this only makes me more afraid of steeper hills.
Thanks for the helpful vid. I don't really have any Hills to practice on but can I practice this on flat ground? Obviously I won't be fighting gravity but will it help me get used to knowing when to release the rear brake to prepare for when I am starting on a hill? My dad bought me a brand new KLR650. Never drove anything with a manual transmission in my life until I took the MC safety course last week lol. I'm still trying to master not stalling from stop signs haha.
I started riding yesterday for the first time. I went to meet my friend to go riding but he lives up in the hills. there's a stop sign on the hill and I stalled twice that day. first time was because it caught me off guard. second time was because I didn't downshifted to first gear and I was in second gear so it shut off. next time I gotta go up hill ill use my heartbreak for sure. I don't know how that didn't cross my mind. I was breaking with the front while trying to rev. the. again its literally my first time riding on the streets. eh I managed but this will sure help.
i need to do these badley, i keep stalling :( quite scared of rolling back and coming off :( just recently bought a bike and got a respray, so wouldn't be happy to fall off :(
+Stefan Rowles Me too. I didn't understand when everyone kept telling me give it gas but my hand was on the brake! Now I will try the foot brake. Bike fell but I jumped off in time!
If you have Command of the friction zone there's no need for rear or front brakes. When your on a uphill or downhill you should always have 3 points of contact with ground , both feet and motorcycle . My bike is a 900 lb Indian so last thing i want to do is take my foot off ground at a standstill on a steep hill.
I got stuck on in uphill cuz I parked on one and everytime I attempted to go I stalled. Scary cuz I started rolling downhill. So I went to youtube after he said just feel for your motorcycle's kick I did and boom now I am home.
Wtf... I've been riding 7 years and I still can't do this shit lmao. I just can't put my left foot down. I always have my right foot down which screws me up because now I have no balance to hold the rear brake without falling
puneet7891 actually if you're on a video on how to do a hill start on a motorcycle you can't even start on a 600 you should get a cbr250r they're pretty great I used to have one
MyLifeOnEarth 365 so...lol...i tried the hill start on an extremely steep hill, i had my revs up and started smoothly, unfortunately i was close to a turn and i went straight off the road...but i survived
This video might be 9 years old, but it's still one of the most straightforward videos on the topic. Thanks man, seriously. Time to practice, as I live on two big rolling hills and it's my biggest fear as a brand new rider
I love how your covered your mouth when you coughed while wearing a helmet still lol
hahahahah omg I didn't even notice that
People will cry about anything
🤣
It's Corona Time! 😂
@@renjithroy8422 but predicted 4 years ago this guy is a legend 😂

oh man that sounds brutal haha I'm glad you got out of that situation okay though :)
hmmm not sure what the problem was but is it still doing that now? or are you able to do up hill start now :)
They don't teach hill start in England? I thought it was standard haha well you definitely got it right! I was afraid to do hill start in the beginning :(
wow it's much more complicated than here haha but it seems like it's in place to make sure people get a good handle on bikes before getting bigger cc.
Same thing happened to me today!! Except instead of inching backward and downhill, I actually chucked the bike into neutral, hopped off, and WALKED my bike to the OPPOSITE side of the road (so now facing downhill) and went a different way lmao. My house is on hill and that's my biggest fear I hope I will get over it with the help of your video btw thanks for the information buddy

Very helpful! Just learning how to ride, starting to master smooth starts with the friction zone, ready to attack a hill-start.
Ron Stewart once you get comfortable, do it up! It'll take some practice but you'll get it :)
Very helpful and much appreciated. I'm riding as a learner on my duke 125. Hill starts are the one thing keeping me on the same boring routes. Thanx for the help. Tomorrow shall be practice day!!!
I'm glad I could help!!! Post some pictures or videos of your bike :)
I was weak at this part and I've been browsing through videos on youtube but this one really helps! Thanks a lot dude :)
I'm so glad I could be helpful :) this season I have better mic and helmet configuration so I'll be making updated versions of these :)
HA!! I was practicing taking off outside my house which is on a hill. Going down was fine but I was using the front brake to try and launch uphill lol. I was like 'HOW THE HELL DO BIKES START ON HILLS WITHOUT STALLING' ahaha thanks for this video
no problem man hahaha I had good instructors who taught me little tricks and stuff XD It gets really easy once you start doing it :)
I would like to watch that haha
+Harry Murment Me too! My husband kept telling me to give it gas, but I was holding the hand brake and I couldn't figure it out. Now I'm going to try with the foot brake. My problem is that I start to roll back.

Think of the rear brake as a handbrake in a car.

Once you get used to it, it'll become second nature :) good luck bro :)
Thx man!
i don't get it, you have a 130hp bike....
I used to have a 300 haha
MyLifeOnEarth 365 ahhh haha now it makes sense
When I was testing out a bike that I wanted to buy, I made a left turn down a street and it had a REALLY steep hill. What’s the brand of your gloves?

you are going to fuck up your clutch doing that

ya hills are scary at first for sure. Even now sometimes I struggle haha. You'll get used to handling the bike and eventually you'll be fine :)
Cant thank this guy enough. Perfect demo.
Thank you! I'll be doing an updated version of this :)

will do,. i subscribed to get tips. i was so into riding today i ran out of gas. Its good to ride with friends but im learning a lot.
hahaha I'm glad you're enjoying it
Thanks man, I'm getting my first bike soon and this info is good to know.

What gloves are you rockin?
I believe those were ESKA gloves but now I have Dainese :)
You are awesome dude. Keep on making these videos. You sure got me interested in bikes in general :)
i need to do these badley, i keep stalling :( quite scared of rolling back and coming off :( just recently bought a bike and got a respray, so wouldn't be happy to fall off :(
took me almost 5 stalls and throttle slowly release clucth and front brakes. next time i will use rear brakes. txs.
Thank you Lust. I like that tip...good way to think about it.
How to ride motorcycle when you face uphill slope road around the corner?
wish i saw this earlier. first attempt i used front brakes.... did not end well. needless to say i had a 400pound bike fall on me.
oh man I hope you're okay!
+Stefan Rowles Me too. I didn't understand when everyone kept telling me give it gas but my hand was on the brake! Now I will try the foot brake. Bike fell but I jumped off in time!
huge help thanks

How to do kick start on uphill?

I'm still learning and I must say It's not that hard, the problem is the crocodiles, it would be so much easier without them.
Funke Motor ya those darn crocodiles always get in your way when you are trying to do an uphill start
wow tyty
Kawasaki Ninja 300 ABS
my hill was more steep than that, i'm desperate to climb it T_T
That wasn't even a hill tho
Put it to gear 1, the bike will eventually stop moving backwards

Common sense, kind of...
