    No Griffey, Sheffield, etc. box was searched as in 1989 Upper Deck was an easy pattern with 15 cards in a pack 9 packs per stacks. For example Card numbers. 50, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, etc. in pack 1, pack two it was cards 49 101 201 299 399 501 and so on and since boxes we’re not sealed, most have been searched except for those that just came out of a fresh case.

      @mikedeak12 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know that could be the case. The sequencing in the packs that had doubles weren't exact. When he pulled the three Clemens cards, the cards before and after weren't exactly the same. He had a lot of doubles, but if he actually did a checklist of his cards in hand, without having counted all the cards as they were opened, he wasn't going to have three of everything. Case in point he didn't get three Nolan Ryan base cards.

      I hate to agree with a Dodger fan about anything, but you are correct, sir. See my above post. Watch the video again. No doubles were pulled from the same pack. Although I have seen it in the 100s of cases of this product I personally opened in order to make individual team sets for Walgreen's. After a while UD just sent us 500 count blocks of individual players. The catch was in order for them to do that you had to buy at least one 500 count box of EVERY card in the set. Including checklists. When Beckett had Junior listed at $25, my boss was selling them by the 1000s for $10. Anyone who lived in the Phoenix area at the time and collected, will know what card shop l am talking about. In short, these are not rare, nonetheless, they are damn cool, and I still have an unopened 500 count box of Junior. As a Dbacks fan I wish I would have gotten Randy too. I wonder how many PSA 10s are in there?

      Bluedodgerfan - You are correct. I lost a bet to a customer when these were released. An easier way of explaining it (maybe): For example; you go top left corner, 4th pack down (you can pick any pack in the same stack). If card #3 is in that pack, go up or down a pack and you'll see either card #2 or #4. That will tell you the sequence and you'll get a Griffey within the next pack. I cringe when I see people opening a few packs from a random box. I hope this info is used for the good and not the bad. I hate seeing people get scammed.

    It was like 10 year old me all over again. I opened so many of these packs and the card alluded me. You are so right, when these came out they were revolutionary in quality and design. The foil packs were mind blowing to me at that age. These really did influence card quality in the industry. Sorry your luck was bad, but the memories are good!

    I remember that people knew the sequence where the Griffey’s were in the boxes and pull either the one pack or several packs in that’s area. Till they pulled it, then mixed the packs into other boxes to fill them again. When they first came out I was at a card show and watched a guy pull 3 Griffey’s in one pack. They were stuck together but when he separated them they were fine. The whole show went nuts.

    A friend and I, at around 10 years old, split a box of 89 upper deck. They definitely were the premium card back then. Neither of us pulled the Griffey. The box was factory sealed, and we got a good share of the other rookies, Sheffield, Johnson, Jefferies. Even the Tom Gordon and Ramon Martinez were big then.

  • @EdsterIII
    @EdsterIII 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wow that takes me back. Every Friday my friend Ron and I would go to our other friend's house, Tom. He was a HUGE collector, where as I had older cards from way back and I was into it somewhat. But I had a Gretzky rookie. He had a Hank Aaron rookie. He wins....lol. Anyway we three would head out to a gas station, yep a gas station. They had a old cigarette carton container converted into a sports card holder. You needed them to unlock it to get your box. Every week we'd trek out there for 1-2 boxes each. That's where I bought my first Upper Deck box and scored my first Ken Griffey Jr. rookie card. Another 3 boxes....NOTHING. Then on my 5th and last box, a high series no less I got one more Griffey. So 5 boxes, 2 Griffeys. I had all the "big" stars that ended up not being so big. I also bought a complete set of Upper Deck 1989, as well as assorted rookies in bulk from a mail order card shop in N.Y. I got 89 Topps, Fleer, and Donruss Griffey Jr. x10, Sheffield from the same 3 plus UD. x15. I was getting 10 Griffeys for $10-15 depending on which card. Sheffield was only $.50-$1.00 each at the time. I also bought some BUSTS. Quite a few actually. More football than baseball. Ryan Leaf, Todd Marinovich, etc. Those were AWESOME days and nights. Sitting up with my 2 BEST FRIENDS ripping packs. Trading, joking, and just having fun. Tom had gotten married and had a beautiful little daughter and an amazing wife. She encouraged us to have fun. It sure beat getting loaded at a bar. So thank you again. These memories that re-emerge after seeing these videos are awesome and I get angry as well. I had a couple other "friends" who after my Mom died ripped me off of my entire card collection. Baxk then apartment insurance, storage locker insurance wasn't big. Or I was too young and foolish to realize it. What's done is done. I choose to remember the fun. I've picked up some cards since then. Not many. My hobbies changed after the theft. I just couldn't do it again. Now, well I was forced to leave my job for medical issues. Emphysema and asthma to be specific. I worked my whole life and I'm waiting for disability now. So buying anything right now is not possible. My prize is my
    PSA 9.5 1980 Topps Ricky Henderson rookie. As well as a few Brett Favre cards. His Falcons Stadium Club rookie card. I also have a Troy Aikman rookie as well. So I've gotten a few but I kinda wish I would have picked up some A.Rodgers rookies. As you can tell I AM a die hard Packer Fan. But my favorite is and will always be the Milwaukee Brewers. I received Mike Caldwell's home game cap from the 1978 season. I also got a Don Money cracked bat at a card shop. My Robin Yount & G.Brett mini and regular 1975 rookies were my other prizes. Sorry I diverted on another tangent. I really loved this hobby and whenever I talk and I'm reminiscent about the past, as you can see I can go and go and go. It was a huge part of my growing up, then towards the end of High School I got back into it more. By the time I hit 20, I was back. Not crazy back but I bought a box or 2 a week during baseball season. See I'm doing it again. Geez...ok I'll shut up. Thank you again for these videos. Being very sick, it helps me more than I can say.

    Corners did get dinged a bit, but surprisingly no creases. Still give blame to PSA not being around 😜.
    And ironically the card did take most care of was Gregg Jefferies Topps that same year. Put that in a screw-down holder almost immediately after I pulled from a pack (SMH LOL).

    you are right about not able to earch the 1989 upper deck packs them selfs but if any one knows about the upper deck boxs they can be seached for all the ken griffey jr cards all sat in the same place in the boxs so you know what row and what layer in that row would hold the rockie card at so you are able to take that pack or packs and remove all the ken griffey jr cards in the bos and replace it with a nother pack and you would never know unless you all ready know that you should get at lest 2 to 3 crads of ken griffey jr card in the box and if its a earlyer low number boxs in the first runs with the errors cards you could get even more then 5 per box back then so if you do not at lest get one rockie card then that box had been seached and pulled the pack that had his card in it and replaced.

    At 15:10 your comment persuaded me to re-watch the 88 World series at bat of Gibson vs Eck. It lasted nearly 6 minutes and was just heroic on Gibson's part. I think Gibson's decision to ask for a moment threw off Eck's mojo. That was one of those epic sports moments. I'm not even a Dodgers fan but that is one of the great moments in baseball, one player in his prime the other severely handicapped and he struggles through to prevail. Thanks Erik!

    I never had any of this set, it wasn't until the 1990 high series packs that any store close to me was selling them, but I certainly remember opening my first pack and being blown away by the photos. They changed the hobby. By the way, I'm guessing AL 5 NL 3 for the All Star Game contest.

    I remember going into a card shop and seeing Ken Griffey Jr rookie card for $15. Within a few months, card was up to $150. I kept that card for the longest time. Can't remember what happened to that card. Looked like it could of been a PSA 10

    Still a great idea. Like the vintage box breaks with the big card(s) search factor.

    I feel so bad for being one of the few people to suggest you open this box. The cards though bring back so many good memories of my early days of collecting. These were flashy and new, although real expensive compared to topps.

    When I bought the 89 upper deck early i pulled at least 2 Griffey’s in 3 boxes each. Bought one 10 yrs later and pulled one. Searching these isn’t an exact science but dealers and collectors have there ways.

    I saved up all my birthday money to buy a box in August of 89. Packs were 2/3 dollars a pack. I swear the packs were searched because my box was a ripoff just like this one. Remember, RJ Rookie was a common when this box was for sell. I think we both got scammed. Just 29 years apart.

  • @packpullin97

    Box was searched.
    No plastic wrap on box.
    The high series is actually better, you get one rookie per pack.
    I pulled two Griffey rc from a sealed high series box.

    I went through about 150,000 cards over my winter break and I came away with a Ken Griffey Jr. RC, A Barry Bonds Rookie, Roger Clemens Rookie, Jeter Rookie, and about 70 Juan Uribe rookies. Sadly his cards are back to $1 or $3 now.
