This was the year I started too. That Griffey card always seemed like a magical card. One thing I didn't like about the 89's were those diamond holograms... They were harder to find in mint condition.
The Griffey looks very well centered. I couldn't tell how the corners looked, but I'd get that graded. My favorite card from the set is the Nolan Ryan. It's one of my favorite cards of all time. I always loved the motion photo.
Every time I see a Griffey pulled, it comes from the bottom left!
I remember people using a pencil eraser to remove the player name from the bottom and try to hawk them off as errors. Lol

The '89 Upper Deck is one of my favorite Cal Ripken Jr. cards.
As a kid collecting, Jerry Reuss and Charlie Hough always looked like grandfathers.
As always - great video Jabs! Love your ongoing content! Funny you mention all the doubles that occur in these packs and the possibility of hitting two Griffey's in 1 pack. My son and I actually had that happen. Was quite the moment for the two of us and we have it saved to our channel (Card Masters) as a Short and on the full video. Remember buying these back in 89’! They were so upscale at the time! Only thing I wish they would’ve done for this set was to number the Griffey’s to like 100,000 and had them all autographed and inserted into packs!

Whats weird is they say its over produce but I remember back in 89 open 4 or 5 boxes I pulled zero Griffeys.
Upper deck printed out whole sheets of just the jr. rookie to sell. Former employees have admitted to it. That's why you can't tell just by pack coalition.

Great video!! Was look g for the Murphy reverse neg. Go Braves!! I remember looking for the Griffey. Had a machine at our movie theater that had a Griffey in it. People spent loads of money trying to win it. My oldest boy has the one I got for him and now my grandson will have it.

I like the history of the box, cases, packs etc. I don’t even collect and watch your vids.
I opened so much of that when it first came out. I pulled 10 of those griffeys at my LCS. They booked for $2.50. At the time mcgwire 87 topps and canseco 87 topps were the hot cards. The owner of my LCS traded straight across for those griffeys. Live and learn.
Actually they booked for $100.00 the least in 1989 says $22.50 in 1989 I have every single Beckett from 1989 so none of them say $2.50 maybe you meant $22.50 89.donruss it does have it for $2.50.
Still my all time favorite. I bought one low # from bbce fasc . I got one griffey. I pulled 2 as a kid.
You talked about the 94 season being shortened, I think Griffey could have beat the single season hr record that year 111 games played many to go with and 40 homer’s. JR was the best player of our time!
So much was forming to be an unbelievable year for stats all ended too soon.

My first ever pack of ‘89 Upper Deck had KG on top of the pack. I held onto it for many years and sold it on ebay for $50. I kick myself every day for doing that. Card was perfect too.

Those small “creases” were a manufacturing problem. I remember sending back a bunch of those “creased” cards and Upper Deck sent me an entire sealed box back.
The initial Score wax boxes in 1988 had a similar problem, where all the corners had some kind of extra "flange" almost like they pulled all the cards apart from each other. Did the same thing...sent them back to Score, and they sent me a full box. They were all clean cut this time.
This friend of mine called me a couple days ago.... asked me to look for card 195 Roger Clemens....he goes to me.... look at the grin on his face...... I asked him where's this going?..... I told him I think it's his index finger..????. there's two card's of Eddie Murray... Dale Murphy too.i think.

Wow that brings memories back so fun...yeah we moved the 89 upper deck release back then...I was highly disappointed when I found out upper deck secretly printed full sheets of ken griffey Jr. Cards in an effort to cash in while completely flooding the market and ruining the collectability of this set to me...I sold everything in the ealry 90s...including these...I moss them sometimes bit im grateful I cashed I'm while i still could ...I dont know present values...but they cant be good after what happened...they ruined the hobby in less than a decade for me

If we are still busting packs 31 years after its release, it is safe to say that there are millions upon millions of these cards produced. Probably enough for every single card collector to have five PSA 9-10 Jrs in their collection.
Notice the mapping. When you pulled the Tony Chance rookie, card #3, the next pack had Dave Otto #4, next pack open had Sandy Alomar Jr. #5, so on and so forth.
Centering may be ok. The diamond foil is a little off. Maybe a PSA 9?

I was told these boxes were not factory sealed.
That was specifically addressed in the video if you had paid attention. They were not factory sealed. The cases, however, were. And so when BBCE witnessed the sealed case being opened, they sealed the boxes themselves and certified them as having come from a sealed case.
Just watching this back and crying that I'm the only one who didn't get a great rookie. Hahaha jk all in good fun, it's always a lottery! Great news is that people are really talking about coronavirus and less about the Astros so there's that but I would have loved to pull the Craig Biggio rookie on this.

I'd take the chance and send that Jr to PSA. Although it.. MAY.. BE... 55/45ish with the centering, that hologram on the back is crispy. Its pretty dang close Bro !
Ah yes the 1994 baseball season. I was cheering for the Indians to win the World Series that year.
I bought a box of wax from 89 Bowman and got 2 Griffeys from it. 1 is not centered at all and has a wax stain on the back. The 2nd one looks wonderful though. Im new at this so just wondered if its worth it to send it to PSA to get graded and what would a 10 or 9 grade be worth? LOVE all the vids here !!

I don't understand y sandy alomar cards arent valuable at all, he was a 6 time allstar and cards of ken caminiti, and david wells are more valuable and they both have about half the allstars he had.

John Paul those were only in the low boxes on the first run. Cool store I managed a card store in Tulsa ok. George Moore, the owner, was customer #1 for UD his customer # was literally 000000001 We pulled a ton of reverse negatives and Pat Sheridan error we were selling the pair for $300 cash when they first came to light.

Can someone please tell me why the 2011 Topps Update Mike Trout (pop of over 4,000 10s) is worth so much more than the 89 Griffey that has fewer graded 10s?? Griffey was/is an icon of the sport, and a Hall of Famer. Trout will be there someday, but he isn't in the same league as Griffey was in popularity....
