What I like about this song is that it's not JUST a reverse love song about finding the perfect archenemy; it's specifically an UNREQUITED reverse love song about finding the perfect nemesis but you don't even register as a recurring threat to them
Every time I get into a JoCo mood and start listening to his collection. There is always one that stands out as totally awesome, well written, well played and crafted, well sung masterpiece. And it’s different each time because he has so many. I’ve listened to this song about 20 times in the last few days. Still Amazing.
True foreseeing since this was way before the pandemic.´ I found this far too late, but it is a little masterpiece. Why does JoCo always know which voice suits best to his songs and garnishes it with Beatles bowing chord progressions plus lyrics at a really fine level?
Another reason I really love this, besides the great music: John being on the Ipod on the stand makes it really seem like you two are rivals making this song with your not-so-real hatred for each other.
I've heard/watched this song a bunch of times and I JUST noticed what JoCo is doing with his backing vocals...so cool! It's all...minor key ish? Very interesting
i feel like this is one of those songs that i will like because initially it doesn't make an impression on me, but then i find myself humming it in the store, but i don't know the lyrics, and then i HAVE to look it up, and then it gets stuck in my head for a week until i hate it. then in six months i rekindle my love for it, but keep it at an arms distance, enjoying it in mix CDs, fearing the intimacy will break my heart a second time.
This song was one of the ones I kind of glossed over when I was listening to the album, but after I listened to the whole album a few times through, I started to really notice just how good it is. Now it's one of the tracks that I listen to the most from the album.
This song was the first I'd heard from the album, and likely the reason I fell in love with it. Artificial Heart is one of my favorite albums of all time. Got the vinyl coming in the mail.
It's a John-spiracy. Next thing you know, Johnathan Coultan, John Roderick, Johns Flansburgh and Linnel, and John Hodgman will be in a room together sipping whiskey or cider or daquiris or whatever it is that Johns drink, reclining in velvet chairs and nursing bubble pipes.
So I can actually hear Jonathan's voice in this one (unlike the recording for the album assuming he sung there as well) it makes me wonder what this song would be like if it was just JoCo singing. That said I love it to pieces the way it is.
Love this song. Captures me and my girlfriends relationship perfectly. We were both super competitive in highschool and always competed very intensely with each other. We also got on each other's nerves a lot. And somehow, we fell in love? Kinda wild. Love this song
Deconstructing things is wonderful and important! It's actually a hobby of mine, despite still being in high school (can't decide if a degree in Sociology/Social Anthropology will make me more or less prone to deconstruction...
I love this song! I got a chance to see them perform it in Boston last June. I love the video, too! John F did an amazing job on the whole Artificial Heart album!
I wonder how they got such a tight recording with his vocals from a phone. Wouldn't there be latency issues? Great song, these guys should collaborate more.
whenever I hear this, I always picture hero/villan teams singing it to each other at some sort of karaoke bar. Thor and Loki, Batman and the Joker, etc etc.. someone needs to animate that!
I think a lot of you people that are assigning famous rivalries to this song are missing a key possibility: this guy might be crazy. He may simply think that this other fellow is his nemesis, when in reality he doesn't even know him. Maybe the first fellow has simply chosen the other guy and convinced himself that he is his nemesis in an effort to give meaning to his life and validate his own craziness..
That's what I thought, but I think that JoCo made it a duet on purpose. JoCo is very intentional with his music. I think it's two crazy people who are enemies/soulmates.
What I like about this song is that it's not JUST a reverse love song about finding the perfect archenemy; it's specifically an UNREQUITED reverse love song about finding the perfect nemesis but you don't even register as a recurring threat to them
Yassssss I love it
Yeah its basically the first two seasons of The Venture Bros.
I was just thinking this! @@a_yanki
John Roderick totally nails it on the "Well Played" lyric. Makes the whole song for me.
100% agree
still singing this a decade later, thank you for the absolute bop Jon! ❤️
It's bizarre how this actually made me cry. The beginning reminded me of someone I used to know who used to be my friend.
This video was so ahead of its time. This is the most 2020 music video I've ever seen
Underrated comment.
Why can I imagine this duet being sung by the mad scientist from Skullcrusher Mountain and the kid from Future Soon?
Savos Mok It's odd, because they're the same kid.
Mimeslayer REALLY?
Mimeslayer Time travel!
Jonathan Coulton Cinematic Universe
@@MimeSlayer1337 Wrong again Mimeslayer, Wrong again.... one of them is a kid, the other is an adult. 😂 but yea it is odd still.

The harmonies for this song make me melt. I don't know what it is, but oh man.
I find that when I melt it's very plesant to dip a strawberry into my slowly dissolving leg and then eat it.
I've heard/watched this song a bunch of times and I JUST noticed what JoCo is doing with his backing vocals...so cool! It's all...minor key ish? Very interesting
It's genius. Dr. Horrible did the same less subtly.
And this wins the award for Best Use of a Retina Display In a Music Video (or Ever?)

I love how detailed this comment is, thank you

Loving everything on "Artificial Heart," Also grateful you had the smartphone in a shockmount in case someone left it on vibrate.
This song was the first I'd heard from the album, and likely the reason I fell in love with it. Artificial Heart is one of my favorite albums of all time. Got the vinyl coming in the mail.
Excellent, Joco!!! I love it. Long time listener.
Still listening?
Are you still listening?
Performed by Jonathan Coulton and John Roderick, produced by John Flansburgh and commented on by some guy named Jon (Me)
Joco is good, he should do more serious songs like this. I enjoy his funny ones, but I just can't get enough of this
xXBadIntentionsXx This one isn't devoid of humor though.
This is serious? Lol
The most beautiful kismesis song ever.
John Flansburgh directed this. Let me repeat. JOHN FLANSBURGH DIRECTED THIS SONG. Y'know, from They Might Be Giants? That's what I thought.
yeah, and the other john published the album this was on.
It's a John-spiracy. Next thing you know, Johnathan Coultan, John Roderick, Johns Flansburgh and Linnel, and John Hodgman will be in a room together sipping whiskey or cider or daquiris or whatever it is that Johns drink, reclining in velvet chairs and nursing bubble pipes.
targetdemographic Too Many Johns, toooooooo many Johns
coppersunshine Don't forget they'll be in a room full of hookers, so they'll be Johns who are Johns o_O
he did re your brains with TMBG somewhere on youtube.
Dude I've listened to this a couple hundred times at least over the years.
You hear that? That's the sound of my heart being warmed
I was literally just thinking of this song when I glanced at Facebook just in time to see TMBG link to this.
I love the internet.
These two are the best at harmonies since Simon and Garfunkel or Billie and Mike from Green Day.
Seriously, I get goosebumps at the chorus.
This album is criminally underrated. It’s so good.
You redefined my understanding of the word "Nemesis". Thank you.
Every time I listen to this song I just smile.

You can't hear JoCo on the studio version? He does the backup vocals similarly to this version
Love this song. Captures me and my girlfriends relationship perfectly. We were both super competitive in highschool and always competed very intensely with each other. We also got on each other's nerves a lot. And somehow, we fell in love? Kinda wild. Love this song
Two great voices, two even greater beards.
One of my favorite Coulton songs
How all duets will be performed from 2020 on...
You two should do more together!
JoCo and BeanDaddy jammin'
That's what I call iPhoning it in. (Great song and video, by the way.)
LOVE LOVE LOVE the melody on this tune
One of the best songs I've ever listened
Can't wait to see Joco + band on Thursday in PDX!
Deconstructing things is wonderful and important! It's actually a hobby of mine, despite still being in high school (can't decide if a degree in Sociology/Social Anthropology will make me more or less prone to deconstruction...
This is my favorite song right now
FINALLY! JOCO
This will be on loop for a long time.
took the words out of my mouth
Love Joco! His music got me through my depressed middle school phase when i was bullied all the time.
When you made this comment I was 11 and just started listening to the guy. He gets us ALL through it, man
Well played indeed!
This doesn't feel 11 years old
Feels brand new ✨
Love the harmonies here!
One of my favorite songs!
Hmm, for some reason, I like this version better than the one on Spotify and I don't know why
"Directed by John Flansburgh" DEAR GOD. EVERYONE IS JOHN.
Just heard my favourite singer get promoed on a 2011 episode of my favourite podcasts and... Well, I had to listen to the song
mbmbam?
Yeye. Also wack that the long winters guy is the bean dad. This year is already so goddamn weird.
ahh, so THIS is where I first heard John Roderick!
Oh no, now I have to keep looping Nemeses again and again. I shall make an enemy tomorrow so that this can be my life theme!
This song makes me think of Dr Doof and Perry tbh
Totally 💙
I refuse to believe that this isn't a scrapped P&F song, intended to be sung by Dr. D.
@@connorking8503 yes
aaaaand another coulton song about my life
Just saw them do this in Boston last night. I'm still smiling!
best song ever johnathan coultons awesome wish i could meet him
JoCo, you songs really make me feel better on my worst days. Thank you for that.
Two Words! F**king Awesome
I need to see him in concert again.
this song gives me extreme lawlight vibes
I like this song,
Just saw them last night. Got them both to sign my Artificial Heart CD
I can see this being sung by Dr. Horrible.
Tetrachromia I see it more as Johnny Snow singing about Dr Horrible, myself...
(Not that you probably care a year later...)
Sarah Carter I absolutley care this is still one of my fav songs and dr horrible is wonderful
Hurray for JoCo and NPH! :)
Great song, from a great CD.
Great tune, thanks to TMBG for linking it!
I love this song! I got a chance to see them perform it in Boston last June. I love the video, too! John F did an amazing job on the whole Artificial Heart album!
I love those glasses! Very 80-ies!
I saw them do it in Boston last summer. So great on stage!
How was this not on the soundtrack for The Lego Batman Movie? Serious missed oppertunity
Dove Calderwood 🤭
ikr
seeing them in Philly in four hours!
sounds great
so great in it's simplicity.
come to germany!
Great song! Favorited video.
That was absolutely amazing!
nobody pointing out the fact that this song was made by 3 people with john/jon in their name?
God damn this song is awesome :)
Brilliant acoustic riff!
Great job!
Wow this is fantastic. :D
Like a love song to your nemesis.
Kind of makes ya think.
Love this song
Nice!
Wonderful song! :D I've been working on covering this since I go the new album.
woow this is amazing
I love your songs. Your defiantly better than most of the musicians around today.
welllll playyed
It's like Johnathan knows my life almost perfectly.
I wonder how they got such a tight recording with his vocals from a phone. Wouldn't there be latency issues?
Great song, these guys should collaborate more.
It's highly unlikely that they actually used the audio from the video that's seen on the phone here.
They have a whole Christmas album together
This sont is perfect to describe me and my nemesis
Loving the acoustic version to DEATH, man!!!
whenever I hear this, I always picture hero/villan teams singing it to each other at some sort of karaoke bar. Thor and Loki, Batman and the Joker, etc etc.. someone needs to animate that!
If you think that phone guy sounds good, you should see him open a can of beans.
Glad to know I'm not the only one.

I like to think this could be one of my friends pretending to be my friend whilst in fact plotting my demise.
Keep in mind it is a duet, literally two people singing to each other.
+Abyssal86 A duet is just two people singing together. They aren't necessarily singing to each other.
This is exactly what I was thinking!
That's what I thought, but I think that JoCo made it a duet on purpose. JoCo is very intentional with his music. I think it's two crazy people who are enemies/soulmates.
I want to make that video now...
cool and NIce
