    It's 2024 and this is still the best pop song there's been. I'd listen to the horns and the fuzz bass for 10 minutes straight, but it only works because each "movement" passes so quickly.
    Pop. Perfection. Thanks, Ben.

    One of my favorite songs of all time. Musically it's damn near flawless. The drums, the bass, the horns and of course a master class in pop piano from the worlds foremost expert. Don't even get me started on the lyrics. How Ben Folds never achieved super star status mystifies me.

      @@fullblowngaming You and I both know how genius this man is. Sadly, most of the world does not. "Those that know" is nice, but we also both know he doesn't get the recognition he deserves.

      the autotune on his vocals is a bit much tho, makes me like the live versions a bit more - but then you usually miss those horns and the crowd saying "ba ba ba ba" never comes close...

    Man this song hit home back when it dropped. I was 18 and had nothing going. I thought about the Army too and unlike Ben Folds, I have zero musical talent, and I ended up signing up and going. Such a great band!!!

      ThAnk you for your service! And yours is a dynamic real story.
      I could not have done such but i could just (eventually) play some.
      i had mostly missed this music era except that "The Luckiest" was requested a few times at Weddings.
      Yep, gReat song and all the elements in the presentation.

    • @mistabook
      @mistabook 8 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Yeah! It's so melancholy and depressing, but at the same time so absurd. The little details like Chick-Fil-A and growing a mullet see to that - it's total first-world problems, but of course when you're living them you don't have that advantage of ironic detachment. Wasting $15,000 of your parents' money is a huge thing. Getting kicked out of a band that is the only thing you have going is practically insurmountable. I love the way he digs in and makes you relate to this misery, no matter how mundane and specific it is.

My fam says we have a bit of Irish and maybe even British in our family origin, I mean... I believe it because I'm the only one who has a strong accent, the accent sounds British too... but I was listening to british and Irish accents and they say words like garden and garage differently like me when I hear other people say it... it just feels right to say garage as (gare-idge)

    My dad sat me down when I was 19 at a Dennys and gave me a speech about how I should join the airforce. He was in and wanted to do 20 but got out and married. I had stupidly married at 19 and thought I knew everything and brushed it all off. As I got older I wanted to go the Marines route later in life but was blocked everytime with convenient promotions and now here I am in a career in banking years later. I wish I had taken my dads advice. This song just kills me.

    Wow, listening to this again just took me back to freshman year of college, sitting in the grass watching Ben Folds play an outdoor concert at W&M. He had all of us in the audience sing the brass part in the bridge... ba da baaaa badababababaaa...

    I've loved this song for a long time (love the bass). Also haven't listened to it in a while. I've recently been thinking about joining the military (Navy specifically, but I'm almost too old, so also Army), and just re-listened to this song. My mind is melted.

    I'm currently on journey to find for the 90's song that i don't know the name of
    But i can remember the MV that i've watched in midnight, the MV has this Soviet-theme and genuine army choir and some social realism statue and the Red Star while also there's people climbing up stairs to the sky
    If you knew the song that meet my criteria, please let me know
