    Acros 100 is above God tier due to its reciprocity characteristics for long exposure photography. Also, when developed in Rodinal it shows no grain.

    • @timothyzimmermann4612
      @timothyzimmermann4612 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed. Acros was definitely God tier. I'm really hoping the new Acros will be as good as the old.

    • @girmonsproductions
      @girmonsproductions 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Science of Photography would rodinal be better for acros than ID11 stock? Have you tried it?

    • @TheScienceofPhotography
      @TheScienceofPhotography 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@girmonsproductions I personally think that Rodinal (sometimes branded as Adonal or R09) is the best developer for Acros 100. I develop semi stand for 60min with 1:100 dilution (semi stand = 3 initial inversions, let sit for 30 min, invert 3 times, let sit for last 30min)
      The reason is that rodinal does not contain solvents that cause a smoother grain, but make you lose sharpness. It is a high acutance developer so it normally would increase grain size, but doesn't impact slow films that much (Acros 100, Delta 100, Pan F 50). Don't use Rodinal for films faster than 100 ISO.
      I have never tried the ID-11 with Acros, but I do know that ID-11 behaves in a similar way to Kodak D-76. It's a good all around developer, but i feel that it does not produce the finest grain on these fine grain films.
      Rodinal only comes as a liquid so if you are in a part of the world that has difficulty with liquid chemical shipping then I think XTOL (which is available as a powder) would be a better choice than ID-11.
      Hope that helps.

    • @tallaganda83
      @tallaganda83 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Provia is the same, i use it for all night star trails not even a colour cast and if it does its a nice blue look.

    • @girmonsproductions
      @girmonsproductions 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheScienceofPhotography oh I see, I used to use R09 stand dev for 400 speed films and I did not like that at all. so I switched back to 1:50 / 25 but now recently been using ID11 ( 1:1) and I sort of liked it, but I got 5L of ID11 so Im gonna try to use just the stock because I like the results from that. Once I will run out of ID11 I will try Xtol or DDX

    The new formula of Lomochrome Purple is actually fantastic. I have a video comparing it with real Aerochrome if you want to check it out.
    Kodak Gold is actually my favourite colour neg and over exposed Portra 800 is my favourite Portra film!
    Velvia 100 (not 50) is also underrated. Fuji 160ns is still available in Japan and Australia! Acros is goodtier!
    Rollei Retro 400s is great too!

    I've got to thank you again for this one, George. I don't shoot film that often, and when I'm about to order some, I find myself coming back to this video as a reference. The only thing I might disagree with you about is 400TX. Our labs are very consistent, and back when I used to process that film myself I found I could get very consistent results. I had no such issues as you mentioned. If I wanted really strong grain and that striking contrast, it was Tri-X every time. But... Now my top two are the same as your top two. Basically, because since I don't shoot that often, and 36 exposures per roll means that quite different situations might arise from the start to the end of one roll in my camera, just how awesome those two films do at shooting nearly anything makes them my go-to choices.

The pictures I took were absolutely gorgeous and the colors were super vibrant. Of course it's up to the photographer's style and preference but I would totally use ektar 100 again for portraits.

    My 3 favourite films are Colorplus, portra 400 and HP5! Glad they made the God tier! Haven't used lomo 800 so will defintely check it out!

    Thanks for this, I don't shoot much colour so it is interesting to hear from someone who uses it frequently. FWIW my first couple of rolls of Ektar 100 came back really muddy and grim, bit of a gamble.
    In terms of what is not on your list but I would include:
    Ilford Delta 100 is my current favourite film, just beautiful and I have some gorgeous prints from it;
    Kodak P3200 beats the socks off Delta 3200;
    Kodak Pro Image 100 is my favourite colour stock;
    Rollei IR 400 is all kinds of R72 fun and I love an infrared landscape;
    Ilford SFX 200 for those lovely black skies and more sharpness than the Rollei;
    and I have had fun with novelty films like Revolog and Yodica, which tend to use Kodak stock I believe.

    Kodak P3200??? (It’s a no for me btw)
    LOVED this video. I watched the whole thing from beginning to end. Loved how your list absolutely reflected your shooting style as all the films that you put in God and Amazing were color films, aside from HP5.
    I’d be curious to see other photographer on TH-cam do a list like this one.
    Great video!!!!

    Darn! This is a cool video on film. I have some expired film rolls of Fuji Reala, Fuji Astia, Fuji X-TRA 800 and Portra (160, 400 & 800) sitting in my fridge and I don't know what to do with it since I have sold my Voigtlander Bessa R3A + CV 40mm f/1.4 M-Mount years ago.

      Aye, poor lomo purple - seemed like such a fun idea at the time. Maybe a sun drenched summer on a fabulous coast would've created more pleasing results (all round lol), but a cool damp season in the UK really didn't do it any favours. Can safely say won't be using it again, maybe gift the remaining rolls to someone I hate lol. Saying all that much more excited by the metropolis (?) stock there bringing out next - pledged for 10 rolls of that...

    Fujifilm Acros 100II both 135 and 120 is selling here in Japan, have not tried it yet as I still have a load of the original I bought just before it went away. I always push Acros to 400, that is the look I enjoy the most. I only hope the new version looks the same

    Awesome video! Only thing I might change is bumping Fuji Acros 100 up to Amazing. I think it's a really underrated film and have a good stash of it in my fridge still :D It's super flexible and I've had plenty of success shooting at ISO400 when needed and even some decent results at 800.

    Great, fun video. Largely agree, and am pleased you were brave with your HP5 / TriX decision. My key changes would be Pan F 50 up to Amazing or God. Niche for top quality b&w studio portraits. Also you need to try Agfa APX 100, a poor mans Acros IMHO.

    I miss Delta 100, Rollei Retro 80s and 400 in your list (all of them great films). Mostly agree with all of your thoughts, but I think Acros should be considered higher due to the lack of reciprocity failure and contrast rendition. Fun video :)

    Hi George, I'd love to know how these scans were achieved!
    What I assume are 6x6 medium format shots on Ektar 100 seem to have unreal detail in them, better than I see out of my medium format negs.

    Not sure I'd put Velvia in "no" but it definitely has some drawbacks, one being its pretty expensive, and two, its hard as heck to shoot. Way less forgiving than Portra or pretty much any color negative film and if you underexpose it has a sort of blueish overcast look to it. But tbh totally agree with the rest of these thoughts!
