    No plans no models no strobes just plenty time.
    That's why I like street photography. So natural.

    From the time I first picked up a camera I enjoyed going around taking candids of people and places. I was only relatively recently that, without changing my interests, i became aware of being a "street photographer" - something that I had previously only thought of as a bloke who stopped people in the street, snapped a picure of them, took their details and promised to send them copies for a fee.

      I think that’s exactly how I was 20 years ago until I bumped into others doing the same and read Joel Meyerowitz’s book Bystander.

    Really wonderful video, Nick. A real artist creating this kind of instructional material - and doing it at such a high standard - while most TH-cam videos feature insipid pictures and photographers, is truly a rarity. Thank you!

    I just started in street because it was the only kind of pictures I could shoot while walking my small children in the park. Now children are my favourite street subjects.

    In the Meyerowitz photo there is a passenger in the back seat of the grey/blue car in traffic who is also a spectator to the scene.

    The pole makes a strong 'rule of third' divider as well. Ironically this photo would probably be ignored entirely if posted on instagram - detailed photos just get lost today.

      Thank you Eddy, I get into a lot of hot water online arguing for a simple definition of Street Photography but I think it is a distinct way of working with a camera and as such benefits from some simple broad parameters.

    Bravo, so well articulated. I think many street photographers will identify with your ‘whys’.

    I enjoyed this. The thing for me is the shooting environment is never static. The light and people are constantly in motion. This is can be very challenging in combination of never knowing quite how your subjects will react. The last topic about your unique style is the most important and hardest to obtain.

    Great video, Nick! I’m very much in agreement with your views on street photography that you give us here. They really echo why I love the genre so much. Your breakdown of Joel’s masterpiece was spot on. Really like your channel and think it’s both useful and important in a time when lots of TH-cam vids on street are really missing the point.

      Thank you Fred, I really appreciate the encouragement and support. You just have to be who you are and express what you believe. It often gets me into trouble but I quite like the audience here on TH-cam.

    Another great video, Nick, I have a lot to think about, specially now that I'm in a new city and country, away from my original environment(s) for street photography. Talking about new beginnings. Thanks.

    This was a very interesting and inspiring video. That precise question has been floating on my mind for years. First, when it was asked by family members, a bit baffled by my insistence in photographing strangers. Second, too myself, because there I agree with you, it is indispensable to have an answer, even if it changes over time, because that is your very own way to find your own voice (and style).

    • @streetphotographywithnickt1648
      @streetphotographywithnickt1648  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it can be a hard question to answer, not at all obvious for everyone but I’m convinced that identifying your own reasons is an important step to maturity as a street photographer.
      Thanks for watching :-)

    Very nicely put together, Nick. Thought-provoking too. I would take slight issue with one of your comments: that SP is the most difficult of photographic genres. I think all genres are very difficult to do really well, but perhaps in different ways. Wild-life requires infinite patience and time and knowledge. Portraiture requires some special connection, lighting etc. Landscape requires.... etc. As you know, of course.

    Another great video Nick. 'Fallen Man' by Joel Meyerowitz is also one of my favourites (I have a signed copy, aka a postcard of it he signed on the back at a talk!), and I liked your analysis of the photo, however I spent the whole time watching compelled to point out that it was taken in 1967, not 1976!

    Have you ever encountered problems photographing inside museums and galleries?

    • @streetphotographywithnickt1648
      @streetphotographywithnickt1648  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only in the ones that don’t allow photography ;-)
      My Tate pics in this video were shot before they banned it because people were copying the artworks with small high quality digital cameras.
      I still love working in places like The British Museum where it is still allowed.

      Its a new channel Daren and I think there is some ground work to lay down before rushing out with a camera.
      I only have 3 videos so far but I’m planning to do:
      POV on the street
      Theory pieces (like this one)
      Street Photo Reviews
      So only one third should be a ‘talking head’
      Thanks for watching and thanks for the feedback.

      One of the issues is copyright, TH-cam are quite specific about this, my own images are fine but I need to get permission to use the work of others really especially if I might have Ads on the channel at some future time. A lot of TH-camrs ignore this but I’m being cautious at the moment. I even paid to licence my intro music etc.

    Just because a guy is dressed in overalls doesn't mean he's not smart. Terrible assumptions.

      In Britain, "smart" means well dressed. Nick wasn't referring to anyone's intelligence. :)
