    I'll definitely add my voice to those telling you that "Coming to America" should now be added to your watch list. It answers a "whatever happened to..." question from this movie. It's also a really fun comedy, one of Eddie Murphy's best.

    Reminder, You really need to watch "Coming to America" at some point; it's another one of Eddie Murphy's Best and there is an "Easter Egg" scene that calls back to this movie.

    In the scene where Mortimer disses on Randolph's heart attack, Don Ameche requested that only one take be done, and that no mistakes be made. The reason for this was that he didn't like to swear and that he didn't want to swear repeatedly.
    Another piece of information. The police officer going through Lewis's things whe he is being booked is none other than the voice of Yoda himself, Frank Oz.

    Eddie Murphy did several other projects before 1984's BEVERLY HILLS COP. While still a cast member of the comedy TV show SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE from 1980 to mid 1984, Eddie's first movie was 48 HOURS (1982). In 1983 Eddie did TRADING PLACES and also his stand up comedy show DELIRIOUS. In 1984 Eddie did BEST DEFENSE and BEVERLY HILLS COP. In 1986 Eddie did THE GOLDEN CHILD. In 1987 Eddie did BEVERLY HILLS COP 2 and his stand up comedy film RAW. In 1988 Eddie did COMING TO AMERICA. In 1989 Eddie starred in and directed HARLEM NIGHTS. In 1990 Eddie did ANOTHER 48 HOURS.

    When Aykroyd is having his things gone through by the officer, the man going through it is Frank Oz who voices Miss Piggy and Yoda.
    On a fun fact: When Aykroyd brother in the Blues Brothers, played by John Belushi is released from jail, again it is Frank Oz who gives him back this time his possessions.
    Please if you haven't watched the Blues Brothers you should it's a great movie.

  • @williamjones6031
    @williamjones6031 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    1. Aykroyd made his bones (as did Murphy) first on the original Saturday Night Live.
    2. He also worked with John Belusi in the Blues Brothers.
    3. Beeks is played by the late Paul Gleason. He also played Richard/Dick Vernon in "The Breakfast Club" and the idiot deputy police chief in "Die Hard".
    4. The police officer that tells Louis the powder is PCP is Frank Oz the voice for Kirmit, Yoda and many of the Muppets.
    5. The studio didn't want Jamie Lee Curtis for the roll of Ophilia because they only saw her as a scream queen, but Landis insisted on casting her. Good for us.
    5. I like how sympathetic Coleman is to Billy Ray. You can tell early on that he has no love for the Dukes.
    6. In the restaurant when Billy Ray is about to speak it's a play on the old EF Hutton commercial. "When EF Hutton speaks everybody listens"
    7. One of the most paused scenes in VHS history.😍🥰🤩 (JLC)
    8. I wonder where Winthorp got all those drugs (and the gun) for only $50 Even in 1983.
    9. There's an Easter egg regarding the Dukes in Murphy's "Coming to America". HINT/HINT
    10. When Don Ameche says "Fuck him" regarding his brother he insisted that they use only the one take, because of his religious background he didn't want to swear at all. He also had an issue with the N word too.

    Both Dan Akroyd and Eddie Murphy got their start on Saturday Night Live, though Akroyd was no longer on the show when Murphy began. I would not be surprised if they met on the set anyway, with Akroyd visiting or as a guest host, during Murphy's time there, or through the show's producer, Lorne Micheals who clearly had a keen eye for comedic talent.

    Tara, I wish I could spend a few hrs talking with you, there is sooooooo much culturally rich inside baseball you had to be in the 80s to understand. Just a couple points, as comedians that grew up poor, all the SNL guys made movies making a lampoon of the uber rich in the crossover from the late 70s through the 80s and they all share similar characteristics. The music and they are all filmed in these amazing mansions. The reality is interesting too, those mansions by the hundreds are all on the market today, for sale for a fraction of the potential value. There was a tail end of living that was really ending in the 80s that they are spoofing. The wealth and life the poor aspired to is so shown here. This existed in the US in a handfull of cities as it still does today.
    Id recommend Brewsters Millions and The Toy.

    To explain the trading floor scene, as I understand it: It was a quirk of the system that actual purchases and sales only had to be settled at days end, not at the time, so you could sell something before you even had it, as long as you then purchased it before the end of the day. Most of us would be crazy to do so, because we might get hedged into a situation where we had to buy what we'd sold at an inflated price if we were wrong about which way the price was going. Unless you know in advance, as here, that the price was going to go down, so you would be able to buy to cover your sales for a much lower price than you had sold it for, thus making a profit without ever having to lay down a penny.
    That being said, I don't quite then understand why they needed the investment from Coleman and Ophelia. Can anyone explain that to me?

    • @rjd6214
      @rjd6214 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm honestly not sure why they needed the cash. If you think about it, it doesn't really make sense. You pretty much explained it correctly though. They were "selling short," which means you're selling a share you don't have for whatever it's worth at the time. Then, once the OJ report was broadcast, it drove down the price of the share. So, in order to settle up with the trade commission, the had to buy back the shares they sold that they didn't actually have. Doing so, they sold at 149 and bought at 29. I don't think what Winthorp and Valentine did is legal anymore though. If I'm correct, it's actually called the Eddie Murphy Law.

    • @crankfastle8138
      @crankfastle8138 ปีที่แล้ว

      Im not sure if its needed so much as they are buying in and so that they can profit too.

    • @emurphy42
      @emurphy42 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@crankfastle8138 As I understand it, it was basically a security deposit to be allowed into the trading floor at all (since they obviously couldn't or wouldn't go through the Dukes to get access), and given a line of credit that greatly exceeded the amount of the deposit. Winthorpe and Valentine took their line of credit and made a huge profit; the Dukes took theirs and made a huge loss, and when the margin call came in, they owed it immediately and were bankrupted.

    • @Michael75579
      @Michael75579 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think they actually needed the money from Coleman and Ophelia; they just wanted Coleman and Ophelia to have a share in the scheme and therefore get a share of the $394 million Winthorpe and Valentine made.

    Just a heads up about your desire to visit Philly.
    Philly is the poorest major city in the US, with an extremely lax system of justice and a high murder rate and car jacking rate. In 2026, the city will be celebrating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Unfortunately, the historic parts of the city have lately become more congested with fairly violent homeless residents and thugs that rob people outside some of the nice restaurants in "Old City". They (we) will try to prep for the celebrations, but there needs to be change in too many things to consider it safe enough for tourists.
    Any time, but especially in 2025, Boston / Lexington / Concord will probably have enough to satisfy your historical curiosity, with a lot less danger. In 1975, they did up the Bicentennial well, including an appearance by the US President (Ford).
