To be honest I think the remake handled the relationship between the parents better. Don’t get me wrong Maggie and Mitch were great but they always seemed to be fighting for most of the time they were on screen together where as Liz and Nick were amicable to each other the entire time they were together, they acknowledged that they both made mistakes, and you could tell that they still loved each other.
Honestly, I believe the original verison was more realistic about the parents' relationship. They got divorced and did the whole rearrangement so they would never see each other even if they had kids in the picture. That tells me that was nasty splite. It has to be pretty bad that till the point not wanting to see ur ex means not having a relationship with ur other child. Maggie and Mitch just split and never try to contact eachother other or try to build a friendship with each other for the kids' sake. That tells me they have a bit of resentment towards each other. So when they saw each other for the first time in years, they literally started where they left off. Even if they did realize they made mistake of breaking up but they are too stubborn to admit it, which is why they never contact eachother once since the split. With Liz and Nick seeing this as an adult, I do find it a bit unrealistic. They got along right away. Many couples who try to be friends for the kids' sake have trouble getting along. While Nick and Liz never try to be friends for the kids' sake or contact each other.
