ABBA was always great at two things: (1)Superior production/engineering. (2) Masters of incorporating hooks, both musically and vocally. It is no wonder they're popular.

It is fitting that you reacted to ABBA songs today as the guitarist on these songs (and most of their songs) Lasse Wellander died last week, aged 70 - RIP. When I first got the Super Trouper album, The Piper stood out to me and I played it over and over again! Björn said: "The lyrics deal with the fear that there will come a time when people will want such a leader again". He did sing lead on some ABBA songs, but Does Your Mother Know was the only single on which he did so. It fared better in the UK charts, peaking at #4. My recommendation for an amazing ABBA song is "Eagle" (1979).

You're kidding! 😢 This is the 3rd time in a week that I have done this unknowingly. My psychic abilities must truly be soaring these days...well a great way to pay tribute while also me getting educated at the same time...Adding Eagle to the short list. Thanks as always Simon...

ABBA’s vocal arrangements are second to none. Never mind the perfect sonic blend of Frida’s and Agnetha’s voices. I can think of no other band or artist who orchestrated their background vocals with more innovation. Some might protest and say Queen, and of course they pioneered the multi-layered vocal stacks in popular music. But they did so in a fairly traditional fashion, stacking up a choir basically. ABBA promoted backing vocals to one of the most important instruments in the mix, kind of like keyboard parts. And a little known fact is that the women in the band contributed greatly to those arrangements. Innovation isn’t easily taught, but most songwriters and producers could learn a great deal from ABBA’s attention to vocal arrangement.

    • @christianoazzuro6711
      @christianoazzuro6711 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Agree.Concerning female vocal blending i could only put Cass Elliot and Michelle Phillips from The Mamas and papas come close. But in Abba's case ,Frida's and Agnetha's voice was like the 2some melting perfectly in one making it as strong and unbelievable as a wonder is, some is unable to explain.Simply Utopic.

It doesn't surprise me that many contemporary ABBA musicians have enjoyed them as a guilty pleasure. From Peter Townsend to the members of Kiss, they have praised the surprising complexity, within the apparent simplicity of ABBA's songs. ABBA's musical range goes from progressive rock, through Glam Rock, pop, Euro pop, Early electronic music, folk, romantic Italian and French music that they masterfully mixed with classical and baroque music. They were and are unique. In 2021 they returned after 40 years with an exquisite Album called Voyage. David from the Foo Fighters, appeared with an ABBA shirt on his social networks!

The Abba song that i think you will enjoy, and perhaps be astonished by, is "The Visitors". It is from around 1981-82 and shows that they have a dark side. Pure spacey 80's synthpop. It did not hit commercially in the U.S., but was a huge hit in the dance clubs. Think Abba meets Alan Parsons. Unforgettable.

Abba is Goat of pop with so many styles, influences from many cultures. The very best ABBA-song in my opinion - The Name Of The Game. It’s a funky romantic complex gem. Not sure if that one has been popular in the U.S. but was number 1 in four weeks in the U.K. Long version of Eagle is also great from The Album.

another comment to the second song
    "The piper" (1980)
It is a very nice song from "Super Trouper" album
It has very interesting lyrics, I think it alludes to the Pied Piper of Hamelin
Musically it is very creative, and although not exactly, I place it in the same group as "Eagle" & "Move on" (sounds seems like Andes music, from South América)
And vocally it is of excellence, the begin of the verses with Frida and the choral part of Agnetha & Frida is powerful and glorious (including a phrase in latin)
"The Piper" is very good, but it does not enter my Top 20 or 25, it is that ABBA has even better songs, the bar is very high
Never perfomed, not have an official video
Ir you like suggestion to react more ABBA songs, I think that their nine Singles #1 in UK aré the best choice
But if you like gems ore underrated songs, I give you a few list of gems:
I've been waiting for you (1975)
    My love my life
    & Tiger (1976)
and specialy three songs of ABBA The Album (1977):
    Move on
    Hole in your soul
    I'm a marionette
I send a big hug from my homeland

Oh what a treat to wake up to!! Especially The Piper - I distinctly remember hearing this when I was 4 (no kidding - my parents played LOTS of ABBA) - it sounded so ominous & dark, but I was enthralled at the subject matter (singing along without 'really' knowing what I was singing!) The song is still one of my favourites today, 40 years on! I often use this track as one (of many) to prove that ABBA was so much more than disco! Benny & Bjorn are genius songwriters - and Anni-Frid & Agnetha have such wonderful voices.
Does Your Mother Know is such a fun, groovy tune. I love it when the boys take the lead every so often. Thanks for the reactions. Cheers.

So nice to see you return, and with the double reaction to ABBA songs
ABBA in 1979 came to premiere "Chiquitita" at the Concert for UNICEF
then did a TV Special in Switzerland
this is one of your new songs premiere there
(remember that a very short time ago the blonde singer Agnetha & guitarist songwriter Björn had already separated as a couple)
    "Does your mother know" (1979)
is the only official ABBA single with Björn on lead vocals, which entered the UK Top 5
there are other ABBA songs with him leading, in the concerts of the 1977 and 1979 tours he sang "Rock me" and "Why did it have to be me", and thus gave ABBA more variety and a break for the female lead singers Agnetha & Frida
(not forgetting that he sings many songs, some in duet with Benny, on the first three ABBA albums)
I hope to see you soon with more ABBA songs
    My best regards from

thank you very much for your warm words
Benny sings as the lead voice only one song in the entire ABBA catalog, for which he also wrote the lyrics
is "Suzzy hang around" on the second album "Waterloo" (1974)
      it's a nice song, 6pts
      but, speaking of gems,
if you want to see Benny especially, and he's very interesting to watch,
there are two live ABBA songs on their tours that have small passages where you can clearly see and hear him
"He is your brother" (1972) on the 1977 Europe and Australia tour

I've got a confession to make...🥺 now go easy on me..I FKN hated ABBA...😂😂😂 it's personal 🙄 1977 and I was 17 when they brought Dancing queen out, I apparently looked like the blonde one, but a much better looking one I must say, I'm a dedicated prog rock chic as you know, and I was trapped in a bimbos friggin body which pissed me right off 😂😂😂 EVERYONE thought I was an ABBA fan just because of a similarity between me and Our Lady of Sorrows Agnetha... 😳 she always looked manic depressive to me...😳😳😳😳

All good...I can see why they are not for everyone. I'd guess that many Floyd fans don't like Abba? Well, thanks for the comment and all the great support you give my channel 😊💙
