    1:39 - There is also a third type of turntable drive mechanism: the idler-wheel drive (or rim drive). This is similar to the belt drive, except there is a rubber idler wheel wedged in between the motor shaft and the inner rim of the platter. To achieve multiple speeds, the motor shaft has "steps" of various diameter. There are as many steps on the motor shaft as there are speeds of the platter (two for 33/45 RPM, three for 33/45/78 RPM, and four for 16/33/45/78 RPM). A mechanism connected to the speed-change lever or dial moves the idler wheel in between the appropriate step on the motor shaft and the inner rim of the platter.
    Idler-wheel drive was common on record changers, kiddie record players, and inexpensive stereo systems with integrated turntables. Very few, if any, turntables made today have idler-wheel drive.

    Thank you for this. I’m 57 and had separates for my record collection before I donated it to my younger brother, and I converted to cd’s.
    That was 20 years ago and I need to get up to speed on what’s new.
    I’m on a budget so this information is essential for me before I commit myself to buying and make a mistake.

    At 2:15 of your video, you said we’ll get into why the record mat can affect sound quality later, but you never went back to it. I just found my mom’s old Technics phonograph from the 70’s and everything looks like it’s going to work great (like the motor, arm, needle, and even the platter) but I haven’t tried to play an album yet because the record mat is warped. 1) it sounds like better made mats (like ones that are not thin plastic) are going to produce better sound quality? and 2) where can I buy a new high quality replacement record mat for this phonograph, especially if I’m not sure of the model? Thanks for your time.

    You forgot about the all important all crucial strobe light for speed checking. Now many turntables don't have them they just want you to trust that they are engineered well enough to spin at the right speed but Technics not only give you strobe but let you play with the pitch so you can improve on the music if you feel the artists didn't do the best job! How genius is that?

    Hi Jarrett, so my parents bought me a vintage record player for Christmas, and I have really started to get really interested! I've been using some records on it and it has sounded fine, but I just bought a brand new Beatles album today and also used a couple other older records and for some reason it sounds awful and skipping all the time. I've tried gently wiping the dust away around the needle and the records with a q tip, and even a very soft paint brush. I am so frustrated because I can not figure out if I need to get a new stylus, or if it is just the record that is messed up? Do you have any tips?? Thanks so much!!!!!

    • @vinyleyezz
      @vinyleyezz  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment! Well, the record could be dirty and the dirt is causing the needle to skip. It could also be warped but I couldn't really tell you without seeing it first hand. I would say that maybe it is dirty. Even brand new records can be quite dirty because the plants where they press them are also very dirty. The record pressing plants are quite old and so are the machines, so be sure to watch my video about how to clean your records! You can clean them pretty cheap and hopefully that will solve your problem!

    I bought a second handed turntable a while ago and i have been playing records on it. Something seemed off from the moment i first used it, because in order to get proper speed for my records my pitch control needs to be quite a bit above the middle. Is this something i should worry about?

      Yeah that should be fine! As long as it's not tracking at over 4grams it should be fine!

      If you have, like, an Audio Technica LP60, you are fine!
      If you have a Crosley, you are risking damage.

    Can you do a segment on why it’s even worth going the vinyl route? I’m not even being sarcastic. This seems complicated to set the arm and scary that you might mess up every time and scratch a $45 record.

    Belt-driven turn-tables: No. All of them without any exception produce wow and flutter. Even if they're US$150,000.00. Of me, always direct-drive. Even wash-machines are being direct-drive to avoid a failing part. Please. BTW the AT-LP120-USB I find to be the best record player in the world. Good, pretty and cheap. It just does the job, even if the pre-amp is not that hot. There is a hack to skip it but I'm not that of an audiofile.
