I agree with Mr. Hofmann, not the right hobby for you. I have been collecting for 45 years, have over 3,700 LP's mostly garnered at garage sales and thrift stores in the 80's, 90's and early 2000's when everyone was ditching their collections for "perfect sound forever" (usually paying 25 cents each). What a joke. A friend of mine had a Linn Sondek LP12 and played some LP's against their CD equivalents in 1984 when the Compact Disc was introduced. No comparison. I do have CD's, often if I don't have a band properly represented on vinyl and want to know what I have been missing; example: R.E.M. Nothing on vinyl so picked up "Part Lies, Part Truth, Part Garbage..etc". But when I really want to listen, I mean really listen, vinyl is the way to go. By the way, this friend went through a rough spot in 1991 and sold me his Linn LP12. And Mr. Bucknee, you aren't willing to spend $100? Hate to tell you a basic Linn starts about $5,000 and you can go up to $12,000. And before you have a stroke, there is a turntable that retails for over $100,000. I guess it just depends on where your priorities are.

We're still using our record player from the 1970s. Sony stereo music system HP211A with its original Sony speakers. It's really solidly built and great quality. For those on BOTH sides of the "Affordable" debate--The Law of Diminishing Returns. A $10 turntable is a Billion times better than NO turntable, while a $100,000 'table is not Twice as good as a $50,000 'table. It is MY opinion that ~$150 retail is the Start Point. Less, runs a greater risk of Forever ruining your albums(a $100,000 'table ruins albums with improper set-up). Dirty albums ruin the stylus, degrades the enjoyment/quality factor, and permanently ruin albums. Having 50+ records, a great inexpensive Lifetime purchase is a record washer($80-100, Spin Clean), used Once every 10-25 plays, and then a Carbon Fiber brush(on Ebay for $7-10), for Surface dust BEFORE you set the needle down. Nobody said "Playing vinyl is easy/cheap."
I found it at a rather cheap at Barnes & Nobles, around $120. I'll admit, it's not the most orthodox way of starting your record collecting history. But yeah it's much better than Crosey.
@@iamnothale The Crosley briefcase portables are horrible. But the turntables are actually a better value than the AT version. The AT 60X goes for 139-199 dollars. Ha, I'm so far from rich it's hilarious. I have around 200 albums and a U-Turn with some decent speakers. A huge part of my collection were albums I got for $5 or less used from record stores. It doesn't have to be an expensive hobby. Learn to spend more responsibly.
Lots of comments here.... Never realized how popular Vinyl has become again. My set up which is 33 years old: NAD 1300 Pre AMP, NAD 2600 AMP, Dual CS5000 Turntable and KEF 103 Speakers. At 68 years old, I have only a reasonable collection of older LPs. That's wjhat they used to call them: LPs for Long Playing records (Albums). I am looking into possibly a new TT for my Basement stereo setup where I play music - MY Music - that I accompany with my Drum set . After a 50 year hiatus from the drums, I'm back to playing as Hobby..... as I approach Retirement. Looking at the Audio Technica LP120X to be combined with a new Denon Receiver and 2 sets of Bookshelf speakers: Elac Debut 6.2 s and Fluances Signature Series. I comment aou the Pros and Cons of the speakers elsewhere on the appropriate site. Happy Music to All, be safe & well. Music is a great pleasure that hopefully This Madness doesn't take away.
Correction to my comments. I lied. I’m 69 years old. The Speakers with my main stereo are KEF 104/2. Not KEF 103s. Update on the Basement sound system : got a AT - LP 120XBTUSB TT . For the price, IMO can’t be beat. Be well all. Keep the Faith.
I personally bought the u turn orbit because of this video 3 years ago I got the basic model and it’s amazing I have it now still and the only thing I have changed out on it was the mat and the belt, it sounds amazing still 100% worth the money to get the basic model and thank you @Vinyl Eyezz for recommending me this turn table
Here's a tip for you to consider, accidents happen, try putting a cloth over the cover of your turn table. Mine is still pristine, I've had my Pioneer PL-L1000A since 1982. Just a thought.
Awesome vid Jarrett, and that ending was EPIIIIIIIC!!!!!!! Although even more epic than that was your "How to Setup a Crosley Cruiser!" video... myself and my best friend LOVE it so much, it just never gets old!!! We still can't figure out how you kept a straight face in THAT one lol 😂
"Most affordable" Won't break the bank" first one off is $100 xD I tried numerous suitcase forms of both Crosley and Victrola and both were disastrous and almost just as pricey. Luckily I returned them all but I'm saving up for an Audio-Technica :)
I have the LP120, however it's NOT built like a tank. I took it apart and ripped out the preamp and the sound was 120x better. The capacitors in the built in preamp suppress the highs and mids even when switched to bypass. While I was in there ripping out the preamp it's 100% cheap plastic garbage with a 10lb metal plate glued to the bottom to make it feel like you're getting a quality heavy table. The anti skate fails all buyers... if you test the anti-skate on a CD or side D of a record with no grooves you'll see the anti skate absolutely fail. Mines on 6-7 when it should be tracking at 2. This caused the worst inner groove distortion ever when it was set to 2 until I finally figured out it was the anti skate. The platter is also extremely thin and you can here movement/motor occasionally during playback when walking or closing the lid which I fixed by buying an isolated audio wall shelf. The counter weight also needs an upgrade it's not heavy enough. That being said. I love it for the price. With a ripped out preamp (pre-ampectomy), a cork/rubber mat, a heavier counter weight, a solid music hall external preamp, a nagoaka mp-110 cart/stylus, and isolated table in the air with a glass audio wall shelf it's a whole nother WORLD of a table. If I had to do it all over again I'd get the debut carbon.... The amount of money and time I spent upgrading my table I could of just bought a pro-ject. Great video!... But definitely not a tank it's that stupid cheap metal plate that's lying to you.
Totally agree with taking the built in preamp out. I had one at one point. Sounded like it was in a closet compared to my other vintage TT. Took that sucker out, and it totally came to life. I've since sold it, and now have two vintage TT's instead. Take out that preamp, and it's a great bang for the buck.
Agreed. The sound was insane post-preamp. It's crystal clear now vs muddy water with the built in preamp....defeats the point of listening to vinyl with the preamp that table has to offer.
very interesting. I just watched VINYL TV’s channel on how to remove preamp. here’s a novice question will my turntable still play through my Kenwood 7400 receiver with no problem? I do not use any stand alone preamps or mixers. Thanks
I agree, I don’t have the LP-120 but I have the LP-60 which sounded fantastic on my Harmon Kardon desk top speakers. Since then I have changed my setup and have a 7.1 surround sound, all Klipcsh speakers. Connecting my LP-60 to my system is sad because the LP-60 pre amp has no power to play through these speakers. I will be upgrading to the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon with a great pre amp
I agree, I haven’t bucked up the courage to remove the pre-amp yet, but I have purchased the nagoka mp-110 and a rubber mat, mine sounds better than when I first bought it.
Also wanted to mention how happy I am to find this channel! A lot of channels I was coming across seemed like paid for commercials and less like real opinions.
I would never go with a pair of powered speakers for a turn table. You should always run it thru a good receiver so you can adjust your volume, bass, and treble. To fit the sound of your room. If not you will only get a flat response out of the sound. As for my tuner table I have a vintage Technics SL 1200 mkII running into a Kenwood KR-V7030 A/V receiver pushing a pair of Cerwin Vega SL15 passive speakers. For classic rock, and metal. This system is a monster. But it will also bump some retro 80's bass mixes to the point that my neighbors that live about a half a mile away from me can hear it. ( I am glad I live out in the country and can get away with it. If I had closer neighbors. I think the cops would be here a lot. LOL)
But powered speakers allow you to adjust the volume, balance, etc. I had once powered speakers with my stationary computer. One of the two speakers had the controls an amplifier usually has.
I have Roth VA4 powered speakers with my Rega P1 as I don't want anymore clutter. They sound great and you can adjust the volume, treble and bass via the remote. The VA4s also let you connect direct to them via Bluetooth, 3.5mm and optical. Great small speakers.
I recommend: Automatic Thorend TD 170 (with OM-20 upgrade) or manuel TT the Onkyo Direct Drive CP 1050 (with Thakker Epo E upgrade) But I prefer vintage TT from JVC, SABA or DUAL.
I am brand new to vinyl. My wife has a briefcase style record player that we just started using and after my first visit to a record store, I’m hooked. I picked up Nirvanas Never mind record to kick off my collection but when we got home her record player stopped working. I went to one of my local shops but was overwhelmed buy the prices of things and lack of knowledge. This video has seriously filled in a lot of information i was needing! I think I’m going to look into the second record player purely because my wife would kill me if i just dropped hundreds on a turn table. Thanks for the great video! Huge help!
Personally I suggest any new comers into vinyl get a vintage turntable, 1965-1983, you should be able to find a near mint or even mint one on ebay for a steal, some decent brands to note, Pioneer, Gerrard, Technica, and many more but remember, brand isn't everything.
For the passed few days I've had to sort, organized, group, photograph and list vinyls at my job and I swear I fall in love with them more and more everyday I do them.
I already knew all of this, and had the LP60, just watched this to see how it compared to other slightly more premium or differently branded models. I am glad I got the LP60, no regrets after watching.
And it’s the only one automatic! For half the price! Sometime I don’t get why those « high-end » turntables cost so much while they have so little features…
Rega P1 - much better sounding and solid table than the Pro-ject Carbon although it is at $475.00. Would definitely recommend you check it out. Most reviewers would list it as a great beginner table for audiophile grade sound and build quality. Song of the day: Knights in white satin - The moody blues
Really nice break down. Super clean and clear and approachable. Love the Pro-Ject with carbon Tonearm. That seems very legitimate, not that the others don't, the carbon tone arm just seems pretty hi-fi. I personally run with a Systemdek IIX (tear drop arm board cut out 1984) Sanaui AU-217 Integrated Amp (1978 wrack arms) Vincent Pho 701 tube pre amp (2016), Linn Adkit Cart, Rega RB300 tone arm, Klipsch 14m (book shelf)
I really love this review, I’m about to purchase my first HiFi record player setup, and you really helped point me in the right direction and the price points I’m trying to stay within. I’m really thinking about the uturn and now that you highlighted those klipsch speakers with built in preamp and amp, well I didn’t know about those. Thanks, really this video really helped.

Zero times one billion is zero. Be careful with your wording.
@@iminawhitebox7717-Actually, a $10 turntable is "Infinitely" better than NO turntable.

Love the Lateralus vinyl, but I would personally only get t for decoration, as the sound quality is lost in the picture disc
I have Lateralus on CD, amazing!
$500 . “Affordable”. Yeah right.
Perhaps you should get a better job......
My hookers are $30
Thank you! I don’t have $500 lying around!
Here i am in Dec 2019 and this is still a great video for those starting out. Thanks!
I always recommend the Audio Technica AT LP60. It sounds great and is a great value.
The Crosley T400 can be had for as little as 50 bucks if you shop around. And it's the SAME TURNTABLE. All of these turntables are made in the same Chinese factory.
I have a Victrola and tbh its sounds great and I think my parents wouldn't be too happy if told them I wanted a new record player that costs a lot more(I don't want to sound ungrateful)

Check music and electronic stores. 🙂
Thank you!! I'm thinking about getting into vinyl and this is exactly what I needed!!
Awesome video. Personally, I am into older turntables from the 70's and 80's, but these new models are pretty sick. I would totally buy one of those!
they're good but repairs can be pricy

I like how I've been subscribed for over 6 months but I still will not start collecting vinyl anytime soon. Space and money... those are always lacking in the life of a student still living at home. :/
It's definitely a rich person hobby :(
Ha, I'm so far from rich it's hilarious. I have around 200 albums and a U-Turn with some decent speakers. A huge part of my collection were albums I got for $5 or less used from record stores. It doesn't have to be an expensive hobby. Learn to spend more responsibly.
@@chrisjdgrady what u-turn setup? I'm looking at one but I'm not sure whether to get it with or without the built in preamp
I love my Fluance RT-81! Had it for about 3 months now and still working great! Great vid man, Keep spinning that vinyl!
3 months & still working, amazing🤣.
@@seltaeb9691 it’s been over 4 years now and it still works great lol, really good bang for your buck imo
I like your channel! Thanks for not being a pretentious hipster! 😂 that seems to be a problem among vinyl enthusiasts 😂😂

I decided to buy the LP 60 thanks to this video. I’m hoping it’ll hold up a few years, and I can upgrade sometime in the future when I’m not broke lol
Hi... Read your comment. What is your opinion of it after two years? Thx
All old school for me. Sherwood amp with built in pre and TT jacked into the back. If I'm going old school then I go all the way. Akai AP D30.

I like how you see the metal Jesus’s channel
Bro, I come to this vid because I wanna start collecting my favourite records, and the song of the day happens to be my favourite song ever made!

Folsom Prison Blues - Johnny Cash
I use active speakers with bass, treble and volume controls :)
I have Roth VA4 powered speakers with my Rega P1 as I don't want anymore clutter. They sound great and you can adjust the volume, treble and bass via the remote. The VA4s also let you connect direct to them via Bluetooth, 3.5mm and optical. Great small speakers.
you're right. I use a Technics SL 1700 and run it through my Fisher PH 492 boombox.
I recommend: Automatic Thorend TD 170 (with OM-20 upgrade) or manuel TT the Onkyo Direct Drive CP 1050 (with Thakker Epo E upgrade)
But I prefer vintage TT from JVC, SABA or DUAL.

'records'
I think the LP60 is the best deal, I feel like the price-to-sound ratio is the best by far.
